Newspaper Finally Notices KC Tenants #RentZero Efforts Weeks Later

Our blog community has been talking about the #RENTZERO protests and local advocacy against landlords for weeks . . . Today the newspaper decided to pick up the tail end of the New York Times story and the not so surprising conclusions that a lot of evictions await the Greater Kansas City metro.

'I need rent not to be a bigger priority than my kids,' says mom who wants rent canceled

Jenay Manley of Gladstone is struggling to work her overnight job, teach her kids during the day and find time to sleep. The KC Tenants activist wants rent canceled so she can pay for childcare and doesn't have to worry about losing her job or home.

Comments

  1. Tara Raghuveer and the KC Tenants minions shouldn't be surprised with the upcoming evictions. The lease is quite clear on the obligations of both the landlord and the tenant. First and foremost, the tenant is obligated to pay the monthly rent. Nothing newsworthy about the evictions of the KC Vagabonds.

    1. Nothing newsworthy about thousands of people evicted onto the streets? I see news stories about this all the time and you are commenting on one. I mean I get that you have a good understanding of prejudice and hate, but of news?

  2. And what do these people think of the Landlord who can't pay his/her mortgage due to tenants not paying their rent? Just what I thought they don't care as long as they get free rent. You have to pay for services rendered. Are the tenants out of their apartments? Have the tenants received stimulus money? Have the tenants looked for another job? Working with a landlord on late rent is one thing but protesting for free rent is another.

    1. You are totally uninformed. KCTENANTS demands a Missouri STATEWIDE SUSPENSION OF MORTGAGE and RENT.
You could have read this instead of venting.

    2. And why do you think or that the political powers that be have the right to tell landlords or mortgage companies how or when to collect what is stated in a legal contact?

KCTENANTS owns nothing, is nothing, and has no legal right to demand anything based upon an already legal lease in effect.

Tenants and landlords need to sit down and work out their issues on payments. Home owners and mortgage companies need to do the same. In the end the landlord and mortgage company simply want their money as you agreed upon. If you need short term help 99% of those I know in the business will do so. If you are completely in over your head you then have to admit so and give notice to terminate and move.

    3. Thanks Dave, for the legalistic legal advice that the Governor can't help with a statewide problem that's going to effect many thousands more actual human beings of Missouri on May 1.

  5. MISSOURI ACTION NEEDED: COVID-19 and Housing/Homelessness
Missouri is experiencing a public health crisis. COVID-19 affects and will affect our poor and working class community members the most, only exacerbating the state of emergency they already endure every day. We can and must stand united to ensure the well-being of our whole community through this crisis. Rewriting the rules to protect our most vulnerable will build a healthier and stronger Missouri for generations to come.

People who are housing-insecure or currently homeless are at a higher risk of being exposed to the virus, becoming ill, and suffering catastrophic health outcomes. Low-income tenants are also at risk if they get ill and/or cannot work (because they're monitoring symptoms, at risk, watching kids, etc.) and therefore can't make their rent.

    We demand state action to:
    ==> Institute a rent/mortgage suspension
==> Enact an immediate, comprehensive statewide eviction/foreclosure moratorium
==> Ban utility shut-offs and mandate universal service
==> Provide homes and expanded services for people experiencing homelessness

SIGN ON IN SUPPORT and we will follow up with next steps.

  6. Who doesn’t want a “ cancellation” from rent? Most take this as a responsibly and act accordingly and not “ demand” to live for free. Unbelievable

  7. None of the utilities, or other “payments” have not been cancelled. Those companies have agreed to defer payments but not cancel payments. It would be unconstitutional to property owners and small businesses, which is who these people looking for handouts are. It sucks being a tenant but that is the path they chose by their own action or inaction. I disagree that property owners and small businesses should be further disadvantaged by this COV-19, even if the renter has children. It’s tough out here. Personal responsibility for your children - which is a luxury item, in my opinion. That is not the people’s problem. You don’t have to reproduce to the point that it is unaffordable.

  8. Thanks INCEL bitch, for your your opinion that children are a "luxury item".

If your parents get CV19 and run out of money you can go pawn yourself asshole.

    1. Anything in life you choose to get or have can be considered a luxury item as luxury means something adding to pleasure or comfort but not absolutely necessary. So have a better understanding of the word luxury before calling someone an asshole.

    2. Thanks Dave for proving again what an asshole you are by saying children are expendable.

Next time just give yourself a Trump Bleach treatment to cure your child hating bigotry disease?

  11. What this KC tenant group needs to be doing is teaching people how to rent and how to act upon renting a place to live. A simple long standing rule is you should not spend more than 30% of what you make on a place to live. 50% of your monthly income at the very most is all anyone should pay for a place to live. If you have to spend more than that then you really need to look at other options as in sharing a place with family or roommates. So often I see the claim I have 2 or 3 kids and can’t pay the bills and so forth. To that I simply say I’m sorry life took a dump on you but is society as a whole expected to pony up for your bad luck or poor choices in life? If you lose your weekly earnings at a casino do you also think you have a right to demand it be given back simply because you had bad luck?

Life isn’t easy all the time as it takes work and effort to have things unless you want to cruise through life and have nothing. If you choose to cruise then you have no right to demand help from anyone. Plus I’m willing to bet a good portion of those who are trying to blame the economic issues they are suffering now on the COVID 19 epidemic were having the economic issues a year ago.

Cheap housing is a dream for those who have no idea how life works. You want cheaper housing then move to say western Kansas where cost of housing is much cheaper. What will cost you 180K around here can be bought for 60K out there. But jobs are scarce and the pay is much lower.

All I see of these so called tenant activist groups is we want Taj Mahal living and not have to pay for it. We want that style of living quarters so we can use “OUR” money for items we could live with out but don’t want to. We want the right to destroy a place and not ever be held responsible for. And foremost we want the right to sign a contract we will never have any intention of honoring but demand you not sue us because of.

Maybe lay off the Little Debbies and Twinkies and she have more money to pay her rent. Just say'in.

  15. Hey Manley - having to work and helping your kids with their homework are part of parenthood for all mothers and fathers.

Where is the Dad? Is he paying child support if not around?

Not landlord's fault she chose not to use birth control or hooked up with a irresponsible father.

  18. The KC Tenants ideology set the stage for the Great Depression, literally. The consumer didn't pay the business, the business didn't pay the bank, the bank didn't pay the depositors... Ultimately the banks and the country collapsed. The entitlement mentality of the "tenant advocates" will compound the hell that awaits. The idiots at KCMO offer up millions in "charity" but will have no resources to keep the street lights on in a few months.
