Kansas City Braces for Big Financial Blow From Pandemic

A recession sucks the joy out of a city. Shops and restaurants close. Buildings turn shabby. Rebirths of old neighborhoods screech to a halt. Plans for new housing, streetcar expansions, bike trails and park improvements go dormant. A new analysis predicts that Kansas City may experience those scenarios sooner than most other places as the widespread disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic continue.

  2. Get ready. They are going to raise taxes. If you have the means, get out of Jackson County. I am heading for Cass County myself; Clay would be acceptable, but remember that KC spills over into significant portions of Clay.

  3. My company had their purge yesterday, fortunately I survived but half my department did not. Some damn good employees lost their job yesterday. This entire situation is infuriating and cannot happen again. China must pay.

    1. 9:15 it came from China. Look, I'm a liberal guy, I hate Trump with every fiber of my being and think Republicans are a pox on humanity but let's tell the truth here:it came from China. I don't care if someone from Europe brought it here, it originated in China, where so many others so as well. Those wet markets have to go, I don't care of it's a cultural thing, they don't get to keep killing people because of some ancient way of life. Watch this, I watched it live.

    2. You need to ask Biden about China. He loves the place and thinks they can do no wrong.

  7. Kay Barnes and Sly James TIF giveaways of the City's Tax Revenues are what inflicted Horrific Damage in Revenues.
Hope the Lucas handouts slow down after this.

  8. Revenue determines the services, services to not determine the revenue. Despite statements otherwise, KC MO cannot tax more to fill the gap associated with revenue shortfalls. The City of Kansas City is funded sufficiently to provide basic services to the citizens. Kathryn Shields is the only councilor willing to speak the truth.

    1. Does this mean that free bus rides are off the table?

    2. No such thing as a free lunch. The buses aren't "free". $105 million buys a lot of ride share. The KC budget will be decimated. The Power and Light bill comes due each year and the pandemic will wipe out the tax revenue for years. KC will be on the hook for ANOTHER $5 - $7.5 million per year due to the lack of tax in the district. $5 million here, $5 million there... the piggy bank is empty.

  9. Quinton, turn some of the street lights off to save money. The city has too many street lights. The neighborhoods look like a Walmart parking lot. More lights do not improve quality of life.
