Kansas City Foodies Wonder What Happened To Winstead's?!?!

Biz at the iconic Kansas City institution is actually bustling, the long-suffering financials are another implication. Checkit:

Winstead's was once a pillar of Kansas City. What happened? | Kansas City Mag

Illustration by Daniel Sulzberg It used to be like church. Or, rather, since I'm Jewish, a synagogue. After the Plaza Art Fair, or maybe after seeing the Plaza lights, our family would park under the glowing green neon sign next to the white-tile Streamline Moderne building.

  1. Winstead's is still special.

A moderately competent entrepreneur could put it back on the upswing.

  2. It is the textbook example of how a formerly outstanding restaurant let itself go downhill.
The quality of the product became substandard.
The last time that I went to one, they even fucked up a Malt.

  3. Idea: Call in Robert from "Restaurant Impossible."

  4. Look at your work force, dirty ass white 20 year old with snot encrusted nose rings and purple hair and blacks / Hispanics with 5 inch fake nails ( not permitted in food industry. All more worried about their cells than their service. Gone is the dining experience. TOuch cell, touch food, text then serve food.

  5. Last time I went in it took over 30 minutes for anyone to come to my table, even drop of a glass of water and say hello. It was not even busy, and it was noon. Horrible place. I know people have good past memories of it. But the present is alot different. Glad they are gone. Hope the owner lost a fortune as he could care less about the people in KC. The service proved it.

  6. I think what happened is, the Plaza area as well as all of KC has gone downhill, due to poor leadership and the help they have is less than desirable. I've noticed that with several other places around. Some people have been down right dirty, others won't work there because of the crime and favoritism toward the black flash mobs who have hurt many people and received no punishment. The only place that's still good is Brookside and it's next to collapse. So it's not Winstead's it's the city. If you can't get good help and the city is no good then you're not going to be successful no matter what you do.

  7. Not disagreeing with you about the one on the Plaza, but the one out here in Jo. Co. turned just as shitty with a suburban clientele.

  8. What went wrong with Winstead's is named "Haddad"!

    ReplyDelete
  9. They hired released criminals..dervesity plan for the plaza..they robbed them broke.

  10. The Haddad Group is what happened. Everything they touch turns to shit. They're the Trump of the restaurant industry.

  11. The food was never great, the hygiene always suspect, and it was pricey for what you got. There is no value in restaurant meals these days. Would rather have a homemade burger and beer in safety/comfort. I would think that concept would appeal to the SJW crowd since their continuing refrain is 'how will we be safe?'

  12. ^^We would also appreciate you staying at home. Please! Don't ever come out, you would just fuck everything up out here.

  13. ^^Got it, enjoy spending your money (you don't have) on avocado toast and your time on trigger avoidance, hipster douche.

  14. Last time I went to Winstead's there was a straw in my milkshake and I had to send it back.

  15. ^^Wow. I mean, how were you able to recover from such a devastating incident?

  16. It was definitely overpriced, then you had to tip on top of that. The burger business is ultra-competitive, and the Winstead's burger isn't near the top of the list for taste and quality.

  17. Winstead's is still a great place on occasion. And, sorry, we like the waitresses.

Lately, we've been thinking about indulging in a Skyscraper for the End Times.

  18. The koloreds ruined winsteads, they ruin everything. They destroy everything, they rob, rape and murder everyone. It’s in their genes to behave like rats, maybe there’s a biological connection there that we don’t know about?

  19. ^^^Ugh huh. OKBoomer. Bye bye now. Tick tock.

  20. I used to go to Winsteads often as a child when they had the drive in. Like Augusta National, you had to be black to get a job there. Many friendly black folks worked their over the years.

I went there about a month ago, and the food was about the same, not bad. The service started going downhill once they started hiring white people. Mixed race work forces don't do well, people aren't on the same page.

  21. WOW 252 ,, everyone knows a server doesn't place a straw. How did you get some fucking stupid ? Weird.

  22. Brookside is good and Years ago people would drive down 50 Highway TO THE Plaza Take there kid's to have a burger. And walk the Plaza .There are many great reasturants in Eastern Jackson County now THE PLAZA has seen its day. And to many thugs .People want to go where it is safe. And not on a street car going through Midtown.

  23. The behavior of a group of people have ruined the Plaza. The million ok Boomer comment parrot must not have noticed that.

  24. 1:17 is exactly correct! Nabil and his crew have ruined it. Go back and look at all the restaurants they have run into the ground. They take the money and don't reinvest.

Months ago when this was brought up I posted that all you had to do was look at the 107th and Rob building. The outside tiles were falling off. Then the group took all the ones off that were bad and yet to replace them.

It is shameful they have run this iconic place so badly.

  25. 10:20 and 12:38 both have it right. An enthusiastic entrepreneur could get Winstead’s back on track. Even though I live closer to the Roe location, the Plaza is still my favorite. But it needs a good top to bottom scrubbing and some new paint, upholstery, etc. The last time we were there the food was still pretty good but the atmosphere was filthy.

  26. They had really shitty straws and wilty lettuce.

  27. 8:15 - Every restaurant owner has ample time now to clean their place up while closed, The restaurants you will want to stay away from once this virus shit is over are the ones That are still dirty when they reopen after they were forced to close, and ya, they laid of their employees, but the owner still owns the place and its his or her biz, so those places better be sparkling clean by the time they reopen.
