DISGRACE!!! KANSAS CITY STAR PROMOTES CORONAVIRUS 'IMMUNITY CARD' PLAN WITHOUT ANY COUNTERPOINT DEFENDING CIVIL LIBERTIES!!!

Toight the largest daily newspaper in town betrayed every resident in Kansas City by way of publishing a one-sided prescriptive screed without even an attempt to balance a controversial idea or create community conversation or debate.

Without any effort to balance . . . What the Star published isn't opinion journalism and it's not punditry; it's straight up propaganda.

It wasn't until this very moment that it became apparent the Kansas City Star is no longer a community resource but instead serves as an increasingly dangerous, rogue print publishing outfit struggling to retain relevance and willing to promote any radical idea in order to feign political authority.

Kansas City Star Guest Op/Ed: ‘Immunity certificates’ will be key to reopening Missouri’s economy safely

Here's the money line:

"People who have antibodies to the current coronavirus could then receive what have been referred to as “immunity certificates” by the press. Awkward as the term might sound, that is precisely what they would be. Obtaining this information for as many people as possible would be the most effective tool to curb the spread of the disease since social distancing measures were put into place. It would allow us to continue to bend the curve until a vaccine and treatment are finally developed."

The editorial is hidden behind the paywall. It was penned by Jonathan Patterson, a Republican from Lee’s Summit and a practicing general surgeon. Mr. Patterson represents District 30 in the Missouri House of Representatives. He is chair of the House Special Committee on Disease Control and Prevention.

Again, tragically, there is no balance or opposing viewpoint offered.

The clinical polemic makes some important points but threatens to lose readers with far too much medical jargon.

So let's make it plain . . .

THE COVID-19 IMMUNITY CARD PLAN TOUTS MANDATORY BLOOD TESTING FOR AMERICANS WANTING PERMISSION TO WORK AND LIVE FREELY!!!

If that sounds reasonable or if the threat from the virus is that grave then TKC is open to hearing arguments both for and against this proposal. But, given that Germany is already SLOWLY reopening without extracting blood from residents, this is certainly a step drastic enough to merit some discussion and public opinion polling.

The immunity card proposal would basically void the 1st Amendment or make sure that a vaccine was required to attain constitutionally protected freedom and it's not something that any other mainstream Republican is advocating

Again, rather than vitrol or reactionary pushback, this is an idea that merits further consideration beyond the arguments provided by a newbie suburban politico . . . Because it sounds Orwellian at best.

Still, we had a plan for this post that included a great deal of bluster and brash sentiments . . . And maybe a few well placed superlatives. But that's not really productive.

INSTEAD, we simply offer readers a more balanced view of the debate and encourage the public to speak out and share their thoughts and feelings about immunity cards in this forum that's far more open than the sketchy Kansas City Star agitprop that seemingly advocates granting doctors the power of dictators.

  3. TKC, I believe you when you say you are open to ideas.

And I think what you are missing is that this kind of card would be TEMPORARY.

The health emergency is real and this step could save countless lives. It also paves the way for more testing and health services.

Yes there should be a debate but there should also be a consideration of public health and how we live in a society that has already ordered lock downs in so that we can protect public health.

  4. Nothing is temporary in KC. Temporary great flood tax was for 50 years, temporary health levy tax, still going. Hell NO

It will create a new class system, eventually turning out very badly for the have-nots.

The best plan is to stay calm & wait.

  12. There will be blood in the streets before there is a permit card to work. I would place bets on that being closer than people giving up more rights. We haven't made people with other viruses obtain a card, par example HIV.

  13. It's a bad idea. Guy deserves to have his Republican card taken away.

  14. Let the stigma and discrimination begin. Rhetorical, but no clue of exposure to the virus does or does not result in immunity to the virus. As noted by the doctors over and over again, time will tell. The antibody tests indicate antibodies, not immunity. No conclusion one way or another if the virus every goes away. No cure for herpes. No cure for HIV. Endless virus continue in the body for life.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Assuming the article is correct, the end result will be quite a few people intentionally exposing to the virus to acquire immunity. No same person would hire an individual without immunity, given a choice.

  16. Who would have thought exposure to a virus would be an advantage. Decades of avoiding HIV and herpes. Strange days indeed.

  17. I think the doctor makes a good point about more testing. He's not completely off base but not sure if a codified system will work in the very short term. Like three weeks from now.

Icelade randomly tested 10% of its population and 90% of them didnt even know they had it.

    3. I always love the comparisons of Sweden, Finland and Norway to all our problems. Perhaps people should move there and not stay here. Add to their population and then we will see how comparing a small country to one with more illegals than all their populations combined. Maybe then report back . Rather simple concept. Now let's compare New York City to Dead horse, Wyoming.

  25. Nothing is temporary in this country. What few freedoms we had left after 9/11 are being whittled away under our noses. We need to stand against these ideas and gently convince those in our circles that support them out of fear to critically think through them and then make their decisions.
What this virus IS showing is that people on both sides of the political fence share similar concerns over loss of freedoms and both sides are willing to impose those measures against us. Thatv is when you take out the low brow emotional comments in this comment thread.
