Rep. Cleaver Calls For Recurring Direct Payments To Americans Until Coronavirus Crisis Ends
April 9, 2020
(Kansas City, MO) – Today, United States Representatives Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA), along with 57 other members of Congress, called for direct cash assistance for Americans to continue on a monthly basis until the coronavirus pandemic subsides.
In a bicameral letter to Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader McConnell, Minority Leader Schumer, and Minority Leader McCarthy, the lawmakers wrote:
“Simply put—people need more money in their pockets, and sending monthly payments to workers and families is the fastest and most direct way to address that need. Now is not a time for timid solutions. In the face of an unprecedented moment in economic history and public health, we need to offer bigger, bolder and far more aggressive policies.”
“With another staggering 6.6 million Americans filing for unemployment this week—totaling more than 15 million workers in less than a month—it’s crystal clear that we’re facing an economic challenge unlike any we’ve seen since the Great Depression,” said Congressman Cleaver. “Families and workers have been crushed by the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, and we need to ensure they can maintain a roof over their head and food on the table until this crisis subsides. The best way to do that is direct payments to those who have been devastated by the virus.”
