TKC MUST SEE!!! KANSAS CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT SALES TAX PUSH STARTS AMID CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK!!!

At the risk of expressing far too much cynicism, it's not unfair to say that the current pandemic reminds us how much Kansas City and the world rely on first responders.

Quick update on the continued threat of COVID-19 . . .

UPI: Trump tests negative, U.S. restricts travel from Britain, Ireland

Locally . . .

A proposed sales tax hike for the Kansas City Fire Department met with initial resistance but now the "life or death" pitch might earn a more receptive audience from voters given the International focus on healthcare.

And so we offer a look at the pitch and the argument before voters . . .

  1. Turnout is everything in this vote and in April it's relativity low. I think it's more important that there is no organized opposition against the tax so it will likely pass.

    2. No he’s right. FUCK KCFD! They waste tax dollars, screw the citizens, play the overtime game. When half of the top 10 highest paid City employees are from Local 42 and THE highest paid is an EMT making $250k because of overtime, the citizens are getting screwed.
      VOTE NO!!

  4. Malfunctioning trucks my ass, they just bought new trucks in 2016.

  5. Most miles on fire trucks are for going to Price Chopper and for backup for ambulances. We need less fire trucks. Vote NO on the regressive sales tax increase.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Even the crews complain about the lack of work due to the lack of calls. No need for the fire truck to follow the ambulance, additionally. The city needs fewer fire department resources, not more.

  7. Greedy Democrat Firefighter Union slobs looking to scam the Coronavirus outbreak to get more overtime pay for watching porn at the station.

  8. The democrats are always saying they are for helping the poor but continue increase sales taxes on the poor. Vote NO.

  9. 4 million for the hotel, 125 million for the jazz district, 62 million for Barney Allis Plaza, 1 million for art in the park farce....but we need a new tax for fire equipment. No.

    ReplyDelete
  10. They have brand new fire trucks

    ReplyDelete
  11. This isn’t about new equipment, it’s all about raises, don’t be fooled again.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The city will simply take general fund money that goes to the fire department and use the new tax revenue to replace it. More money left in the general fund for paying off failed development deals. The KCFD will get a little of the proceeds in repayment for their support in the election but I would guess these funds will go for employee raises. If it comes down to better equipment or raises we all know what will happen.

  13. KCFD needs true and good leadership to be installed. The latest Chief hiring was a joke and nothing more than a political move by Lucas. Units following EMS units around is the dumbest thing going while a waste and abuse of million dollar units. Put plain cheap ass pickups in the stations to run backup to EMS calls and one or more left at station to roll if need be on a call that demands a fire suppression or heavy rescues. Stop all units driving to Price Chopper and so forth as all stations have a kitchen and everyone can either bring in the own food or make a shopping list on prior shift for someone to pick up before returning for next shift. Many working people take their lunches and what not to work with them and are not allowed to go running all around town shopping here and there for things while on the clock.

Entirely to much running around town in very high dollar red taxis is taking place that needs to be stopped. And it isn't all trips to Price Chopper that's taking place. Fuel savings alone would probably be shocking if known. I swear you can't hardly drive down the streets in this town and not see a ladder or pumper unit parked somewhere besides a fire station. I will not vote for any tax increase till I see the KCFD start doing a little cost savings of their own.

I'd sure like to step in as Chief of the department and I may go down as the most hated Chief ever but I guarantee you a lot of waste and bullshit would come to an end.

  14. Although the fire service was built on fighting fires the truth is most of what we do (80% or more) is associated with medical calls or other emergencies. Today, to stay relevant many fire departments are training more and more firefighters to be emergency medical technicians from the basic level to paramedics. Many still identify with riding on the big red truck; however, most of our calls could be responded to in SUVs or sedans. Yes it's time to stop running EMS with firefighting rigs and use smaller backup units or add another person to each EMS rig along with more units if coverage is too thin.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Firefighters don't work most of the time. They spend most of their time at the station either sleeping, working out or watching sports. And when they're not at the station, they're usually grocery shopping, not actually running calls.

Cops and military have to deal with the scum of the earth on a daily basis, worry about getting shot at, etc.

Even when there's a fire, firefighters aren't usually in any danger. They spray the fire from far away, they have protective gear, etc.

They don't have to worry about a fire recognizing them, following them home and shooting them, etc.

Not to mention people blow smoke up their ass (not literally, well maybe...firefighters probably get bored of cheating on their girlfriends/wives or just sucking eachother off) so most firefighters you talk to have inflated egos and act like jackasses/douchebags who can't take any criticism from people because they're so used to being pampered.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It's good to be a firefighter, especially if you live in a small town. You're one of the best-paid guys around. You get lots and lots of time off to go fishing or hunting or run your own business on the side. And your union always gets its way.

There's just one problem. The people you work for can't afford you anymore.

The firefighters' union does not want to acknowledge any of this. Its strategy is to try to discredit and intimidate its critics, while reminding us that firefighters risk their lives on our behalf. They like to warn that any effort to challenge its demands will put the public at risk of frying in their beds. They insist that firefighters do extremely valuable work when they're not fighting fires, such as training, prevention, public education, inspections, and pre-fire planning, to say nothing of sending their big red trucks screaming through the streets to rescue people in car accidents. But in all reality they seldom actually work an eight hour day when on duty. If it's a weekend they basically do no work at all unless they get a call. Many firefighters on duty use that time to book off duty work or shopping on say Amazon.

I have respect for firefighters. They're brave people and they do their jobs well, so far as I know. But their union is far too powerful for the public good. The arbitration system is broken, too. Although arbitrators are supposed to consider a town's ability to pay, in fact they don't. As a result, firefighters and cops are eating up a bigger and bigger piece of municipal budgets, and actually performing less and less all the time.

The firefighters' sense of entitlement is rapidly exhausting the goodwill of the public, who are increasingly fed up at their high salaries and cushy working conditions. Yes, they save lives, but nurses save lives too. And look how hard they work. When nurses go on shift they're working every minute. They save lives every day.

A new audit shows that overtime pay at the Kansas City Fire Department continues to rise.

In 2017, more than $16 million was spent in overtime pay. That’s more than double the budgeted amount.

The audit was released during a city council committee meeting Wednesday morning.

The audit compared KCFD to departments in cities with similar population size, among other factors.

KCFD data was compared to the fire departments in Kansas City, Kansas, Cincinnati, Arlington, Sacramento, Milwaukee, Nashville, Memphis and Jacksonville, Florida.

The report showed that KCFD has the third-highest expenditures compared to the other eight cities.

  23. I lived next to a fire station years ago. They grilled every night, played horseshoes, tossed footballs, grab ass etc. You could see their t.v. on inside. Looked like a great job to do nothing while getting paid handsomely, great pension, and early retirement.

The police on the other hand deserve every penny they earn for putting their lifes on the line every day.

KCMO citizens are taxed to death already, and water bills are so high it costs $5 to take a shower in your own home. Vote no on additional taxes.

Show you can fix potholes first before asking for more tax money to turn around and give developers.
