In a recent post former Kansas City Star newsman Jimmy C chides people buying guns & ammo at the outset of the coronavirus crackdown.
Thankfully, our blog community offers a thoughtful retort . . .
A reader offers shares a perfect example of someone attempting to further an ideology in the midst of a crisis . . . Jimmy C goes off on gun owners. Here's the relevant part:
"That quote conjures up the images that Second-Amendment fanatics see in their heads…And that is — and let’s say it exactly like it is — poor, desperate, East Side Kansas City residents (black!) arriving in hordes, bearing sticks and stones and AK-47s; storming suburban houses; killing and maiming residents; raiding their refrigerators and making off with whatever valuables they can lay their hands on.
"It’s a terrible specter for the paranoid. Keeps ’em awake at night.
"Where most of us are locking down, they are locking and loading."
From TKC's vantage . . . These anti-gun arguments always target white people but ALWAYS forget that many people of color are just as adamant about 2nd Amendment freedom. Case in point, images of Korean store owners defending themselves and/or flexing during the LA Riots have recently resurfaced amid worst-case Coronavirus conversations.
Accordingly, here's the argument from our reader community:
"I like how he tries to reach the conclusion that all gun owners are (of course!) card carrying Klan members awaiting some sort of latter-day Nat Turner Rebellion. What an a$$$hole.
"I see one of his commenters informed him that most gun owners already had firearms and ammo . . . and that most of the people buying now are likely first-time, liberal purchasers. As I recall, the same thing happened after 9-11, when the urban northeast suddenly topped the country in new purchases/instant check applications.
"The rest of his recent stuff seems to center around how much he admires Dr. Deborah Birx' fashion sense
"Thought your readers/commenters might enjoy seeing what rejected journalists like addled, old Jimmy are concerned about right now."

Jim has some good stuff every once in awhile. He is a good reporter and an awful pundit.

ReplyDeleteJim is completely wrong this time. Gun owners are not racist. They simply want to protect their families and homes in uncertain times. They don’t care the race or species of the threat. It could be a person or a mountain lion. Doesn’t matter. Jim’s just stoking the flames here.

It’s the Trumpitis that helped bankrupt the media even before Trump.
Newspapers are dwindling as no ideas worked that kept them afloat- they never had leadership that was successful in predicting a future and game-planning successfully. Witness where most stand today.
Their bold ideas and reputation and game plan can be found today on empty driveways across America. Size up the remnants of a newspaper today that you occasionally will see in a driveway and you will see how well they adapted and how the game plan is progressing.
Liberal ideas rarely work and if Jimmy needs some examples he should look at California homelessness (embodiment of Pelosi and Schiff’s policies and lifelong work). Or even Chicago- tax rates that stymie the poor- and a great liberal mayor that wants to outlaw long bike rides and long walks to combat the virus (Jimmy can’t even make that up).
So now people who buy guns are racists. With that racist logic- Jimmy - who kills the most in KC? How? Oh guns. What race? Jimmy buddy- by your own logic you are a racist and the paper you love is almost gone because of ideas that don’t work.

ReplyDeleteThe only man I know who carries a gun whenever he leaves the house is a black man. He is also a hunter, though he prefers the cross bow for hunting.
He voted for Trump, & probably will again, because he cares about his right to conceal /carry more than anything else; more than health care, or immigration or voting rights.
So, I think that Jimmy is half-right, it is fear based behavior, but claiming that it's about racism is just hysterical nonsense.

Pay a small fine, get time off, then go back to selling unsuitable investments to elderly and blind people. If you can pay the fine, then go bankrupt and avoid it altogether - thats OK with Finra. They used to be the NASD, but it was such a joke with dumb examiners that they changes their names. The KC branch lets criminals operate without much punishment.
