TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY 'RENT STRIKE' GAINS MOMENTUM AMID CORONAVIRUS HARDSHIP!!!

In Jackson County there has been a temporary freeze against evictions but now a movement is taking hold to cancel rent altogether.

To wit and with special thanks to the very BEST & BRIGHTEST readers of this blog . . .

ACTIVISTS WORK TO LAUNCH THE KANSAS CITY "RENT STRIKE" TO HELP FAMILIES COPE WITH HARDSHIP AMID THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC!!!

This tactic is even more extreme than KC Tenants working to provide a rent & utility "holiday" in order to protect the homeless and extremely low income families.

Check the premise and a local petition that's also spreading quickly via social media . . .

"I believe it is our common good to create an area-wide rent freeze now, not later, not next month, but now. Without work, without sick days, many of us, including myself will not be able to afford our rents come April 1st. We will not be able to afford this rent retroactively. We will not have this money at some later date. We request a grace period of 1 - 3 months rent, without retroactive payments expected, during the duration of the quarantine. I am one of the 70% of Americans who live paycheck to paycheck and rely on my monthly income to pay my monthly rent. Nationally and internationally there are efforts to suspend mortgage, rent, and utility payments until the national state of emergency and local regulations keep workers from working and securing an income.

"An eviction moratorium was passed in Jackson County, March 19th 2020 - it is attached to this document for review. Amidst a national emergency a moratorium WILL NOT BE SUFFICIENT and DOES NOT MEET OUR NEEDS of safe and secure housing during these uncertain times. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has signed an eviction ban that applies to everyone effective until May 1st. There is no protection from evictions on the Missouri side. If people are unable to work, we will not have accumulated missed rent in a few months. Again, as 70% of Americans do, many of us live paycheck to paycheck. We are currently unemployed for the foreseeable future.

"We, your tenants, are not the only ones distributing this letter. This personal demand is a part of a larger collective action to freeze rent and protect those most marginalized, including your tenants who are not able to afford rent with these infrastructure cancellations. In these dire times, those who accumulate wealth via their additional property ownership (beyond their home) need to absolutely forgo some of that wealth for the betterment of our society and to ease the suffering of others. We are in a state of emergency, our livelihoods at risk, we hope this is taken seriously."

  1. Alternative yes but only to obeying the contracts that people sign when they move into a place. And no evictions should not mean no rent, just that the county doesn't want people on the street.

      NO THANKS!

  2. Desperate times and desperate measures. A lot of people in Kansas City are going to have to start thinking about the economy differently.

Try this one on for starters, Coronavirus: Government to pay up to 80% of workers' wages

  3. Hell lets just say nobody has to pay for anything the next three months.

Head on down to any store walk in and start hauling it all out since the simple minds think everything should be free.

Everyone is going to have to suck it up and deal with the issue same as I or anybody else. But the freeloaders and scammers will want to take advantage of everything they can.

People who have properties to rent have to pay mortgages for that place these people rent so do these so called renters think their landlord should get a free ride for 90 days? I seriously doubt so.

Our country never totally realizes how ill-prepared we are to handle any natural disaster or to handle an aggressive flu bug till the event happens. What’s really scary is how quickly they will forget what happened or to make any attempts to learn from it. No there won’t be any real planning sessions or committee work to put into place plans to deal with things like we are having to now. America does not have a decent emergency disaster plan and until we take politics completely out of such planning we never will have. The Republicans will always point a finger at the Democrats and vice versa

    1. Funny! Trumpy incompetence apologists talking about planning and learning. Dave, if everyone acts like your cult leader we will attack the critics, ignore warnings, always blame other races and poors, never accept the slightest responsibility. Where's the learning in that you evasive twit? Start at the top Dave, before blaming everyone else, if Trump hadn't been such an asshole for 2 months there would now be far less of a problem.

  4. This whole corona thing is an open invitation for people to stop paying their bills. Now companies won't shut you off/disconnect service/throw you out on the street, etc...the people left holding the bag are those who feel a moral obligation to pay their debts. After this is all said/done companies will not lose money, things will just cost more. Same principal with corporate taxes - it just gets passed on to the consumer.

  6. Maybe if they had put the money they spent on the last tattoo in a savings account they could have paid a months rent. Hardly anyone has to live paycheck to paycheck. One can always find something to cut out in order to save money. But there is a mentality being fed by politicians, poverty pimps and unions that unless you are rich you are unable to take care of yourself.

  7. Mass layoffs and loss of income due to corona are big problems. Landlords and tenants who can't pay rent due to the shutdown (and only those) are going to have to come to some sort of arrangement. Banks and other lenders who hold the mortgages on the properties will have to be involved. But it all will have to be done on a cooperative basis. City and county governments do not have the power to cancel contractual obligations.

  8. Frequently the rent pays the mortgage. This action could lead to unintended consequences.

  9. This group is what I call "excessively organized". Just like Indivisible. This indicates their constant rants are subsidized by George Soros, the war criminal from Europe, billionaire socialist.

SuperDave is absolutely correct. It is socialism and victimhood. These renters are going to receive the same cash subsidy--which is supposed to help them cover the rent.

Just settle down, people. Unless you're saying, hey, just sent that cash subsidy to my landlord. Because if he/she can't pay the mortgage on YOUR apartment, or keep it in good repair, then you truly might be homeLESS.

All the grocers are hiring. So is Amazon. Busses are free. Pay your rent. Maybe turn off cable.

    1. Moving rents or wiping them out? This group doesn’t want them moved. They want the amounts forgiven. What about the landlords who need the rents to pay their mortgages, property taxes, insurance, etc. on their property but will see no rents for three months. Are they supposed to forego 1/4 a year of income because a liberal crybaby group with poor financial planning skills can’t get their act together and so they scream for freebies? I’ve seen this group. They’ve all got cars, plenty of makeup, tats, hair accoutrements, jewelry, salon nails, and likely cable and other creature comforts they could reduce during these times. I’m reducing due to financial losses. I’m not refusing to pay my debts. Suck it up, buttercups, and quit crying so fast for the “privilege” of being a deadbeat.

  33. 1:35, the tax filing date is a US Government function, over which the President has control as chief executive. The President has zero authority to modify private contracts like leases. Neither does the city or the county. The state might, but it would be a huge step and not undertaken except as a necessary last resort.

    ReplyDelete
  34. If the government can’t modify leases or rent, then they could at least pay the rent for them. That wouldn’t be too hard and would not be a burden on the landlord.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 11:33 you unlikeable cunt! Dave is very clear on what needs to be done and he says the leaders need to be less involved. Read what is said before you go wrapping your lips on Dave's nuts while twisting his words around.

Dave is in no way supporting Trump here. But Trump did try months ago and was attacked for doing so. In January, President Trump banned all foreign nationals who were in China during the time of the coronavirus outbreak from entering the United States. Many pundits and health experts have since credited this decision with helping to slow the coronavirus pandemic on American shores.

However, at the time former vice president Joe Biden railed against the decision.

During a campaign rally, Biden said that “In moments like this, this is where the credibility of a president is most needed, as he explains what we should and should not do.”

“This is no time for Donald Trump’s record of hysteria and xenophobia, hysterical xenophobia, to uh, and fear mongering,” Biden continued.

  42. The Renters are gouged .THE Landlord's Have problems to Much of there properties the Banks own. And if they don't pay the bank They will be Forclosers. And then the bank will put you out. And the taxes and maintenance on the building.

    ReplyDelete
  43. 10:08 and 1:50 are spot on. I have no problem with the government temporarily helping those who are out of work due to the crisis, but for them to be demanding free rent is just plain old wrong. Not every landlord is rolling in cash. They are running a business and a lot of them have families to support, too.

    ReplyDelete
  44. The whole point of the stimulus is so the renters can pay the rent. As noted, not rent payment no mortgage payment and then the bank takes over the home and the renter has no home... The bank will sell the property at auction. The entire process further reduces the housing stock.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Once people are allowed to stop paying rent, they will find countless reasons not to restart those payments.
