Overcrowded Jackson County Jail Releases 80 Inmates To Cope With Coronavirus



A local facility that has been repeatedly criticized for for prisoner conditions offers an act of mercy . . . Read more as a $10-million local stimulus act was gutted but this act of mercy stood out:

Eighty people have been released from the Jackson County jail in response to concerns about the introduction of the new coronavirus into the overcrowded facility.

Jackson County Sheriff Darryl Forté said 133 cases were sent to judges to be reviewed and 80 inmates have been released.

Money line:

"Just yesterday, Missouri public defenders sent a letter to the Missouri Supreme Court requesting that certain inmates be released statewide, calling jails and prisons “ticking time bombs” during a pandemic. The sheriff and a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office said only people charged with nonviolent offenses will be considered for release during the pandemic."

  6. The KCPD has already said crime response will be very limited. When those stimulus checks that are to come mail are late, it's going to be Ferguson ALL OVER, all over again. In the meantime these released upstanding citizens can get back into top shape for the coming fire sales.
