KANSAS CITY STAR PUBLISHES SATURDAY NEWSPAPER SWAN SONG!!!

Here's a deadline love letter that might or might be noticed for an edition that was largely ignored by the time somebody finally had the decency to kill it.

What's worse . . .

Rendered mostly irrelevant by their own paywall, the Star promises more digital content and basically tries to explain their website move after more than a decade of telling readers why print was so important.

Check the company line pushed forward by workers who are far more concerned with the funding of their pensions than the additional digital crossword puzzles offered that won't sell an online service not nearly as fun as Netflix.

Saturday Kansas City Star print edition going away, but BLAH, BLAH, BLAH . . .

Money line that contradicts reality, the earnings reports of their parent company and basic math:

"Change is necessary in the business world, and we’re moving more of our resources into the digital side of our business because that is where we are growing — and impressively. The Star leads McClatchy (our parent company) in digital subscriptions, thanks to our loyal readers."

Meanwhile, what we've really learned from the rise of social media is that people would much rather read and gossip about the lives of their friends than keep up with the newsworthy events in their own backyard and there was never really a time when corrupt politicos and big biz didn't ALMOST completely control the civic discourse.

Developing . . .

  1. They still publish a paper in Kansas City?

    That's news to me.

The Tech Giants will still try to control and diminish the 1st Amendment. They are doing a great job.

"Hate Speech" is defined arbitrarily and capriciously to promote the Progressive agenda and at some point, to criminalize opinions that do not fall in line with the accepted "Narrative".

Look across the pond to England and other countries where you can literally go to jail for refuting the Fascist agitprop that passes for news.

  6. The weekday print will be next. My neighbor subscribes and it’s about the diameter of a half-dollar in the plastic sleeve. Once the ad space is factored out, definitely not much content left.

  7. When you piss off about half of your potential subscribers -- many with disposable incomes -- because of your constant barrage of left-wing and unbalanced editorials and news coverage over many decades, and then wonder why these same people don't want to buy your newspaper, your parent company should go bankrupt. Oh wait ...

  8. When your only subscribers on those over 70, nobody wants to advertise to people who are broke and going to die soon. Naturally your business model is in trouble and will fail. Easy.

  9. The Star does not cover much, either in its paper or its on line editions. Time for it to go.

My dad was a reporter for the Associated Press in Chicago. He covered the '68 Democratic convention, the Jimmy Hoffa trial, the Our Lady of Angels school fire, etc. He read four (thick) Chicago newspapers a day. (If your editor says, "Do an update on that murder on the south side," you don't want to say, "What murder?"

I'm glad he's not alive to see what's happened to newspapers.

  13. Retro, you do realize that the combined wealth of the Koch Brothers makes them the richest people in the world, and their YUUGE donations to the far Right, added to their long time commitment to Conspiracy Theory (Daddy Fred founding the John Birch Society, Charlie founding the Cato Institute, etc.) all combine to make George Soros a piker.

If you really have any interest in "How To Fund A Political Agenda For Fun And Profit", I'd suggest you read "KOCHLAND" by Christopher Leonard. Of course, if you're only interested in the "Tinfoil Hat Reality", best to not confuse yourself with facts, just keep on keeping on.

  14. ^^ Yet the Koch brothers have made it widely known they don't like Trump. There goes your theory.

  15. Good riddance Kansas City Star....................your left wing Communist arrogance cost will ultimately cost all of your employees their jobs and pensions. Kansas City Star made it clear it hated conservatives, Republicans, law enforcement, and those who loved the flag. Hope the editorial board all loses their pensions and have to clean toilets in their old age to survive.
