Here's the city college tacitly admitting a mistake as complaints about this dump mired the administrators from angry students already frustrated by attending their 4th choice institution. Checkit:
UMKC to demolish troubled Oak Place Apartments
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Oak Place Apartments at the University of Missouri - Kansas City will be demolished less than 15 years after opening. In an email to the UMKC community on Wednesday, UMKC Chancellor C. Mauli Agrawal said university officials have decided to demolish both wings of the apartments.
I've been in the construction industry a long time and have never heard of anything like this. My interactions with JE Dunn have they've always been a quality builder. I know people have their problems with them but doing jobs right isn't one of them. This is an enormous failure.

Sounds to me like UMKC needs a competent maintenance department and a chancellor who knows shit from shinola.

ReplyDeleteThese stick built structures (wood) were dressed up motel buildings. PVC plumbing throughout was installed incorrectly leading to sewage leaks throughout the structure. The Twin Oaks towers made of reinforced concrete and extremely fireproof. They were deemed just too big and too expensive to rehab at the time. and were flattened to make way for the black mold project that is the next landfill source. Bad decisions followed by poor execution by architects, engineers and their misguided construction crews.
ReplyDeleteI went to UMKC and their a fucking embarrassment. They should have changed their name to University of Kansas City a few years back when they had the chance. And they should have had their art conservatory downtown. There's a lot of other things but they keep failing at the highest levels. Sad

ReplyDeleteThe construction standards in Kansas City are poor at best. Same issues with road and water infrastructure. The water lines in front of my house were replaced 5-10 years ago and the water department has dug them up twice in the past 12 months. The water department told me the lines were expected last 100 years but the lines didn't last a decade. The contractors did a terrible job of returning the neighborhood back to the original condition. The concrete truck washed out the excess concrete in a road median and there is sits despite calls to 311 over and over again.

ReplyDeleteAnd, @10:24, don't forget that every step of the construction was supposed to be reviewed and approved by Inspectors from the City.
ReplyDeleteBet there have been a whole bunch of retirements in the Building Inspection Department since the news of this fiasco started surfacing.
You don't suppose there were any payoffs "Dunn", do you?
Also, remember that "Badly Dunn" is the pack of screwups building the 1970s Plastic Box Terminal at KCI.
