Jackson County Executive amends executive order to align with new CDC guidelines for large group events

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In accordance with new guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and consistent with the recommendations of Missouri Governor Mike Parson and County Health Director Bridgette Shaffer, Jackson County Executive Frank White, Jr. has amended his executive order which will now prohibit large group events or mass gatherings of 50 or more people in all of Jackson County for the next eight weeks. The County Executive’s decisive action is consistent with those of several communities across our region, state and nation in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Large group events or mass gatherings include conferences, festivals, parades, weddings, sporting events and worship services. It does not apply to the day-to-day operations of organizations such as schools, educational institutions or businesses.

“We have reached an important point of this public health crisis,” said Jackson County Executive Frank White, Jr. “Everyone plays a significant role to reduce the transmission of this virus and now is the time to be vigilant. We remain committed to working diligently alongside our public health experts as we take every action necessary to protect the health and well-being of those who are most at risk to COVID-19.”

Currently, there are no reported cases of COVID-19 originating from Jackson County. The Jackson County Health Department is working closely with its partners across the community and region to monitor this rapidly evolving situation. The public can stay informed by signing up for digital updates or submitting questions to public health experts in the County by visiting www.jacohd.org.

  1. The mayor should have prepared a more detailed press release like this one.

Might agree with Frank a lot BUT I think he's doing the right thing here.

  2. One catch...The CIRCUIT COURT of Jackson County remains open, although jury trials are suspended for ten days. Hundreds if not thousands of people will pass through there each week, and fan out all over the county. Worse, Jackson County has TWO County Courthouse...one downtown and one in Independence with plenty of people passing through ALL DAY LONG. All you need is ONE infected person to come through carelessly coughing...

  3. I was scheduled for jury duty on the 23rd. Cancelled. I feel sorry for anyone having to deal with the jail or courts right now.

  4. 7:50, agreed. But it's only cancelled for ten days...at this point. There are plenty of other court hearings and trials that don't involve a jury, and those are apparently going to continue. The Courts are going to manage to spread this. Just wait. Of course, by that point it's too late.

  6. The New York Catholic Archdiocese announced Saturday it has canceled all church services — including those at St. Patrick's Cathedral — over the coronavirus crisis. “(On) the advice of medical experts, all Masses in the Archdiocese of New York will be canceled beginning this weekend,” the archdiocese said.

When will KC churches shut down? Don’t they all have to now if over 50?
