TKC MUST SEE!!! SHAWNEE MISSION SCHOOL DISTRICT TEACHERS SPEAK OUT AGAINST SCHOOL BOARD & BLOGGER 'MISINFORMATION' SPONSORED CONTENT!!!

More than any other story in the Kansas City metro today, the revolt among Shawnee Mission School District teachers has captivated news readers and offers a glimpse at the growing divide among political leadership in Johnson County and grassroots populist efforts to garner better wages.

To wit . . .

JOHNSON COUNTY TEACHER OUTRAGE TARGETS THEIR SCHOOL BOARD AND ALLEGED PAY-FOR-PLAY PROPAGANDA!!!

It's VERY INTERESTING that they're going after golden ghetto blogger Jay Senter and making some bold accusations despite local MSM support he seems to enjoy along with a few cheapskate super friendly web cam interviews with Kansas Rep. Sharice Davids . . .

Here's the news ruckus . . .

Fox4: Teacher in Shawnee Mission School District gives emotional speech as she suddenly quits job

KSHB: Shawnee Mission teacher resigns at school board meeting

Even better, here's a slightly edited word from teachers . . .

The Controversy According To Shawnee Mission School District Watchdogs

Amanda Coffman, a phenomenal teacher and amazing human, resigned tonight at the board meeting.

She (along with other teachers) spoke eloquently and powerfully about the impact of the unilateral contract on their morale and the effect it has on students.

Also tonight, all members of the NEA-SM negotiating team, spoke. They each addressed mistakes and mis-information that has been a part of the media tour and marketing blitz the district has been doing for the last week.

Finally, Ward IV Councilmember Sollie Flora spoke. She was there to support the board. (Hey - voters of Mission - you heard that, right?)

We have resigned ourselves to not knowing whether the people on the board were blindly ignorant or willfully aggressive. We think it's probably a mix of both . . . No matter what the root cause of it is, though, the teachers are exhausted, angry, sad, or worse - increasingly apathetic. They are leaving. The numbers started showing up on the HR agenda tonight.

The board shows no sign of admitting they made a mistake. (Although the Department of Labor may force them to admit it soon.) They show signs of doubling down on their media campaigns. They have posted five paid stories in the Shawnee Mission Post. They have equivocated with the Star, people on the radio, student journalists, and anybody else who will let them shovel their version of what happened. SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS continue to act as if this is all just the way it has to be, and if teachers would only take the time to read things they might be able to understand.

It is infuriating.

If you're a parent you may be asking yourself what you can do. Here are some action items:

1. If you donate to the Shawnee Mission Educational Foundation, write them a letter and tell them to stop funding anti-teacher propaganda. The paid posts in the Shawnee Mission Post do not further the education of children in SMSD. If you have a recurring donation maybe pull it until they stop that?

2. Let your kids' teachers know you appreciate them. While you're at it, tell the principals and the secretaries and everybody you know who works in a school. They are all feeling this, and it sucks.

3. Tell your local politicians that you're watching how they handle this. These folks on our board sacrificed the trust of their teachers in the name of bogus financial security, and regardless of your party affiliation that is bad news. Anybody who stands by them and their union-busting, teacher-demonizing actions is not a loyal friend to public schools.

4. Make yourself watch the comments from the meeting tonight. They start at 1:05:24. Put yourself in Amanda Coffman shoes. Then realize the people teaching your kids are in their shoes everyday.
#############

And here's the video intro . . .

"On February 10, 2020, teachers and supporters delivered public comments at the Shawnee Mission School District Board of Education meeting following the board's adoption of a unilateral contract for teachers against the wishes of teachers, students and parents. Amanda Coffman gave this powerful statement that began with her resignation from the Shawnee Mission School District."

  1. So many people to blame here.

Teachers, school board and bloggers. Methinks that most of them don't have the best interests on students in mind.

  2. Well..., she is obviously very, very passionate about her "cause". Articulate and well spoken, I am sure she is a credit to where she works and does a great job with the kids.

I would absolutely trust my grandchildren to her care under any circumstances.

That said, her analogy of a bad marriage to her relationship with her 'supervisors' is leaking a little oil. In the end, it really is a job and while, as they say, "Teachers affect infinity", you still have to be happy where you work, or, you are going to leave. She is not happy.

    Why?

Expectations. Life is all about expectations. The teachers in the KC School District probably would be happy with the kids and money, that she is making right now. But, just like marriage, after a while, you get used to the cash, the kids and focus on "Inequalities" in the work place and you feel like the guy/girl forced by some shitheel administrator with a whip who forces you into a cave to look for treasure. You take it personally.

Her comment on other jobs, better jobs, that pay better leads me to believe, that the market is out there for more money, especially for someone of this caliber. I would hire her in a minute. Can she make more money?

And there it is, can she make more money and did the administrators who are in charge make a mistake, in not keeping her. If other teachers, like her, who are essentially pissed about not making as much money in that district leave, can they be replaced with teachers of the same caliber?

The speech was great, but, like your daddy always told you, in the end, follow the money.

    I wish her the best.

  10. First this woman is too stupid to be teaching kids in the overpaid SMSD. Secondly she just improved the district by quitting. Third SMSD teachers are the highest paid in the Kansas City area in both Missouri and Kansas so where is she going to go? Fourth the teachers are the neediest people God has put on earth always claiming the need for more money, more supplies, more pension more time off and on and on and on, oh and by the way we are going to teach the most liberal shit to your kids ever! Goodbye cry babies!
As a SMSD district taxpayer I salute the board for FINALLY standing up to these whinny cry babies. Let them all quit then maybe we will get people that are grateful to have the job and do good work, finally!

  11. I don't live anywhere near SMSD but it's one of the worst run districts in the world and you should impeach the entire board and not pay your taxes and burn down every school yeah do it.

  12. As a child, one spends 12 to 13 years watching a teacher at the front of the room (maybe) imparting knowledge. An additional 4 years is usually required to qualify as a "teacher".

So, one is provided with an example of their aspiration to teach for around 16 years. I would also imagine that, upon obtaining a position, they were happy with the salary, thrilled, and looking forward to being that figure they, themselves, watched for that 16 years. THEN, THEY ARE NOT HAPPY! NO SIREEE!

I can only conclude the unhappy ones are STUPID!!! I can think of NO OTHER JOB WHERE ONE CAN OBSERVE THEIR FUTURE PROFESSION FOR 16 F---ING YRS BEFORE "Now I are one!".

Nothing wrong for "asking" for more money, but "demanding, or else" only shows they were too stupid to thoroughly understand AND ACCEPT the built in range of economic limitations their chosen employment offers before committing.

  16. I think the teachers - this one specifically - overplayed their hand. The PV Post, which is no conservative publication, published a very FACTUAL analysis of teacher salaries in the area. Those facts show that the teachers in SMSD are well compensated among their peers.

Instead of attacking the board, who only has as much money as taxpayers give them, the teachers should be attacked the public. They should be arguing that taxes should be raised and their salaries should go up.

The reality is the teachers won't go this direction because they know that while the public loves their teachers and wants to support them, they can't afford more taxes. That's life.

SMSD board is comprised of unpaid volunteers who care about the district, the kids, the teachers, and the community. These are not entrenched bureaucrats like KCMO with political constituencies. They are trying to manage the limited resources of the district for the greater good. Teachers attacking the board will not go very far and will only be supported by a VERY small group - probably not many more than those that attended the SMSD board meetings and talked. Very vocal - not representative of our community.

  17. If Amanda Coffman hates her salary here then she needs to move to Montana where her starting salary would be $31,418. 19 states pay teachers on avg what teachers in the SMSD make. Many states teachers make as much as 10K a year less money starting out. When your pay is on avg with the school dists around you it's kind of hard to say your that underpaid.

Be curious to know how many teachers in other local school dists all handed in resignations this morning in support of Amanda Coffman? You noticed nobody else stepped up to join her in any sort of mass exit from their jobs last night either?

Amanda Coffman is now out of a job. Sure she will blame everyone else but herself for not having a job. But in the end sure she will have her few minutes in the limelight several people saying they support her but are they really going to? They will have a job and she will not. Too add to it she might have gained the label of being a troublemaker, a rebel rouser, something other school dists might want not want to have in their employment. When you are making a lot less than everyone else in your field then I say yes you have a right to whine about it. When you're paid the same as those around you more or less you can still make it known you want more but to just up and turn you back on the students you claim to have so much passion for and leave them teacherless for now shows us the world where your true loyalty lies, "The Ole Mighty Dollar."

  20. 11:59am, Hey Super Dave, there were already 29 teachers names who aren’t returning next year listed on the Board of Educ Human Resources consent agenda last night.
This time last year there were 10.

But hey, please by all means, don’t bother to read the meeting agenda before you comment here. Your stupidity is amusing.

Resignations are listed on each Board Meeting agenda, the Board meets twice a month.
Too early for you to know how many resigned or will resign before the end of the year.

SMSD teacher’s have a deadline of this Friday to accept the non-negotiated 3 yr unilateral contract or resign. Those are the choices. Mrs Coffman resigned last night, as was her prerogative given the choices teacher’s were given.
    She followed the rules.

Go blow your hot air somewhere else.
You don’t know shit about SMSD.

As a teacher I'd like to support Amanda Coffman but at the same time she really makes me angry. She has a rather long record of being a self appointed activist. If she had went all the way with her education in the beginning she possibly would be making more than she is now. But as so many of my peers have done, is get the bare minimum education to just get a job to later find out that wasn't a smart move when wanting to move up the salary and position ladder. Many jobs do not reimburse you for further education but some teachers such as Amanda feel that is owed to them. If you want facts and real truth a sizeable number of my peers are what you call lazy people. Not all mind you, but about the same percentage you find in all areas of the workforce. Those that think everything is owed to them no matter the cost. I have always found the time for continuing education the same as millions of other people have in relation to their jobs who work many more hours and days than us teachers do. Is teaching the perfect job? No, it isn't, but what is the perfect job? Sorry to burst your bubble people, there is no such thing as a perfect job. There, I just educated you on something.

  25. 12:59 hit the nail on the head - this teacher is an activist. We all know the type. They complain a lot. They are never satisfied. They are a victim. It's someone else's fault that they chose a career that isn't going to make them a lot of money while taking off summers, winter break, spring break, and every other holiday you can conceive of. We all love teachers - they are awesome. We just don't like teacher's unions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

11:55 - amen amen - These teachers issue is with taxpayers not paying them enough to educate their children. Flex those union muscles and elect some school board members who you can bully into, I mean persuade into giving you more money or raising the mil levy for SMSD.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Can you imagine the amount of B.S. this teacher has been burdening her 8th grade students with? Talking about how she's being bullied? How she is fighting the system? Walking away from her students in the middle of the school year is okay?

Lots of good lessons here on what can go wrong when you have a political activist teacher in the classroom indoctrinating young and impressionable minds.

A mature adult would not be dragging 8th grade students into grown up issues.....

    ReplyDelete
  27. Think that poster is correct and teachers would be happier if they got fucked more BUT most female teachers are ugly so that makes it difficult. Also, seems like most female teachers don't have a family of their own and use the classroom as their proxy family and they're bitter because they'll never have a family to call their own

12:16 then please for all of us explain why those 29 are not returning next year? Maybe a good portion are retiring? A district with that many teachers, 29 does not sound like too many.

Please explain how many SMSD teachers were too hungover to work after Super Bowl Sunday? They were not to concerned about meeting their contract fulfillments then were they?

Then I want you to explain where all these teachers think they are going to go teach or do whatever that will pay more for working less than 200 days a year if it is pay as the reason for them leaving?

You can't in anyway back up anything you said. It's all horsepuckies and you know it.

  31. They are part time employees demanding full time benefits? How absurd of them. 37. Linda Sieck, National Education Association Shawnee Mission Local President, claims only about a quarter of Shawnee Mission teachers – “those who have dedicated their entire professional career” to the district – make more than $65,000. But she doesn't say where she got that info from or presented documentation to prove such. But the NEA is the teachers union rep so to speak so you can't expect the real truth there.

If you look up avg income in Kansas it's somewhere around 56 to 65K a year depending on whose site you look at.

Like several have said and I looked it up and it's true, but teachers do indeed fall under the part time work category. I know of nobody who works part time making that kind of money.
