TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! OFFICE OF CULTURE & CREATIVE SERVICES CONFRONTS DISCRIMINATION LAWSUIT!!!

Hard times continue for an embattled Kansas City office that hoped to usher in a new "creative-class" renaissance but now suffers another setback.

A quick roundup.

The Office of Culture and Creative Services (OCCS) was established in 2015 to lead cultural development efforts for the City of Kansas City, Missouri. The mission of the Office is to serve Kansas City residents by bolstering and catalyzing arts, culture and creativity and by leveraging the arts as a strategy for economic development, neighborhood revitalization, and cultural vitality for its citizens.

The creation of the office is a direct outcome of Mayor Sly James’ Task Force on the Arts and the convening of arts, civic and business leadership, involved in visioning processes that resulted in a community cultural plan, KCMO Arts Convergence Plan, adopted by the Mayor and City Council in late 2013.

The main goal of this office seemed to be an ambitious citywide art festival called Open Spaces. Well, that and a funky pink tree that still stands on in the urban core.

Sadly and somewhat predictably, Open Spaces proved to be an abysmal failure.

Art haters reflexively scoffed at the event but even supporters of the local creative community became skeptical when VENDORS WERE NOT PAID MONTHS AFTER THE FESTIVAL.

And then . . .

TKC reported FIRST . . . "The Office of the City Manager . . . Eliminates the Office of Culture and Creative Services."

And now KICK-ASS KANSAS CITY INSIDERS report . . .

THE OFFICE OF CULTURE & CREATIVE SERVICES NOW CONFRONTS A SERIOUS DISCRIMINATION LAWSUIT THAT THREATENS TO BUST KC'S BUDGET EVEN AFTER THE DEPARTMENT IS CUT!!!

Take any and all speculation with a grain of salt but simply check the Jackson County courthouse to find evidence of the upcoming legal fight.

For better and worse, KCMO has been on the losing end of discrimination complaints for quite some time and behind the scenes, on the QT and very hush hush this lawsuit power play seems just as threatening as any of the recent 12th & Oak defeats.

  1. KC loses a lot of cases but most don't know about the lot that are thrown out. Every city faces complaints but it looks like the days of the legal lottery are over. The fights are going to be a lot more fierce because the city just doesn't have the money to pay out those incredible verdicts any longer.

    1. ^^^ Really not up to KC. Of course they can make their best argument but in the end a judge and jury decides. Sorry if you never learned how it works. @5:03.

    2. seems like KC is long overdue for some kind of training on how to avoid these lawsuits.

    3. In this case, KC didn't need to go here. Crigger's racist stances were well known at City Hall and in the arts community and they ALLOWED this behavior like they do so many other cases. We have a racist climate at City Hall and there are LAWS against them! The city will continue to pay for blatantly breaking these Human Rights violations until they employ competent individuals who can GET THE WORK WE NEED COMPLETED without a white, privileged agenda! The Office of Culture and Creative Services was merely a money sucking outlet for privileged white WOMEN to have some sort of relevance to their lives.

    4. 5:03 But the city has the MONEY to pay for employees who do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to further the economic base of this city! Such was the Office of Culture and Creative Services! Cutting out Crigger's salary, that of her useless sidekick Consuelo Cruz, severely cut the BUDGET of the limp VISITKC and make them work to bring business and tourism to this town and one more useless salaried employee Chris Hernandez who does NOTHING but plant propaganda stories in support of lackluster events and YOU HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY FOR THEIR MISTAKES!! We can move forward still in the black!

  2. You people haven’t learned yet that these things are setup for friendly individuals of certain political figures to make some easy money. If you can’t give them the money under the table through political deals then you allow them to sue for discrimination and they get paid that way, been going on for decades.

  3. Many artists are bums, spolied rich kids and racist looking to sue somebody. If you cannot profit off your art get a job.

  4. Our art community is definitely untalented and unable to support themselves.

  5. Most of these "discrimination" lawsuits take lots of creativity, so this probably shouldn't be much of a surprise.
Easy money and they don't even have to "win" in court.
Just sit back and get paid to make their "case" go away.
The whole notion that somehow a town like KCMO should be in the "culture and arts" business has been a very costly and losing proposition.
How about seriously addressing the murder rate and fixing the terrible streets?

    1. 7:40 You must be a privileged white woman to think this is a joke or that this type of lawsuit is frivolous. THIS type of callous, malicious assaults against women and people of color destroys lives, healthcare for families, loses homes and destroys a human being's dignity but by all means, let's get a real good belly laugh out of human suffering by diminishing the process if redemption...

  7. The other day KCMO sent out a tweet that they were happy to acquire gender parity with their department's top leaders. They had reached 11 female and 11 male directors. To intentionally hire and promote based on gender to reach this goal in itself is discrimination. Celebrating this type of milestone shows the culture that exists at KCMO

  8. The prior management of City Hall made decisions not in the best interest of the city budget, but rather to ingratiate himself with the power elites of the business community. No doubt, this was a personal favor to someone.

    1. It's there, don't be stupid. It was filed this February. Such lazy reporters in KC.

  14. Megan Crigger's management style of combined arrogance and white privilege were certain to end badly for the City. Her power-player mother Susie Aron's political contributions likely explain how such an unqualified person ended up in a position where she was bound to fail. The employee she fired was poorly treated and undeservedly so. Crigger deserves to bite the dust. Once she's gone from the City, perhaps they could rehire the fired employee and let her do her job.

  15. Ren, I might be stupid, but not finding it under Crigger, Lucas, or City of Kansas City during February.

I can fix stupid with some information. Can you fix mean?

  16. The complaint might be filed with an agency rather than the courts.
