PARKS DEPT. MEETING ASKS: HOW SHOULD KANSAS CITY HONOR MLK?!?!

Kansas City voters are still waiting for street signs to switch back to The Paseo so that offers a hint at this local process will play out. Still here's a glimpse at the chat session coming soon . . .

Public Meeting Scheduled to get Feedback on how to best Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Kansas City, Missouri . . . Mayor Quinton Lucas directed the KC Parks Board of Commissioners to gather public input on how to honor King’s legacy. So far, there have been hundreds of great ideas submitted over the past 90 days. We are encouraged by the collective energy and attention put forth by our community, to ultimately create a more equitable & robust conversation towards unity in our beloved city. We will continue to review and analyze the hundreds of emails we have received from citizens and will be incorporating that feedback into our public meetings.

"We learned a fundamental lesson over the past several months from Kansas City voters: public participation in the process matters,” said Mayor Lucas. “I know without a doubt Kansas City will do its part in honoring Dr. King and I'm looking forward to seeing the ideas that have been submitted during this 90-day comment period. Our Parks Board and community members will continue working together to honor the most significant civil rights leader in U.S. history."

We have the first public meeting scheduled for residents to come out and work together to find creative solutions to this question of how to appropriately honor Dr. King. We will conduct several facilitated group work sessions over the next few months to encourage residents to work together to come up with solutions. This format will allow us to dig deeper, to get more qualitative feedback.

KC Parks Board Commissioner, Chris Goode emphasizes the importance of this process, “I am humbled to have been given the opportunity as a Commissioner to help steer the conversation of how we equitably, sincerely and transparently honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in our dear City. Dr. King stood firmly and vocally for equality and progress. In my opinion, it is our duty to organize and gather Kansas City’s collective voice in a way that reinforces those very premises. We look forward to helping create a solution that at its very core creates unity. My sincere hope is that; when it is all said and done we will have continued the work of the beloved Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and not only honored his profound legacy, but in practice lived it and truly strengthened the unity of Kansas City, MO. and beyond.”

We are best when we come together as a City for a common purpose. We hope we can use this opportunity to help unify the City around this very important issue. The first session will be:

Saturday, March 28, 2020 – 10:30a.m. – Brush Creek Community Center (3801 Brush Creek Boulevard, Kansas City, Missouri 64130)

Childcare will be provided, please register your child(ren)

We are working hard to remove all barriers for this process, so that everyone will feel welcome to share their ideas. We will have future sessions scheduled throughout the city at different locations and varying times to try and accommodate all schedules. Food will be served at all sessions. Childcare will be provided for the evening and Saturday sessions. We ask that you register so that we can accommodate everyone. Please email our Resident Engagement Officer, Kelly Jander -Kelly.Jander@KCMO.org.

  4. Why is Kansas City obligated to honor MLk at all? What did he do specifically for Kansas City?

He wasn't from here, he didn't live here, no famous speeches here.

I don't discount his importance, I just don't know why we NEED to honor him. Is it just to make us feel better?

We have a park. From what I hear it;s in disrepair. Want to honor him? Clean it up and make it a nice place for ALL people to gather.

    1. Better yet, bulldoze it and turn it into a parking lot. Melt down all the MLK street signs and tell the rest of the country to fuck off. Declare that we no longer will be fucked by the king fambly and fake revvs.

  6. How about banning niggers from all city parks?

  7. I wonder if Dana and Parks will talk about this issue?

Oh who am I kidding, they will talk about anything but local issues. Or at least issues that are not in JoCo or Lawrence.

So wonder Pete Mundo is the new voice of Kansas City.

  8. Rename the whole damn city - No longer KC, but MLKC!

All depictions of Harry S Truman shall recast him as a Negro.

We will shine "woke" like a diamond.

  9. Place a bronze statue up ( like the ones they tore down all over ) for every KC metro citizen that was murdered by a Negro last year. Then see the impact of how his dream failed and who didn't listen. Not too much into the fantasy shit social movement of lying and pretending .

  15. Blacks are such pros at being butt hurt. They like to talk about how strong and resilient they are, when in fact they spend the majority of their existence claiming grievances against “the man.” KCMO needs an MLK tribute like they need more potholes. They have a park named after the guy and, as is typical for them, it’s been turned into a shithole. If this honor is so important, clean up and improve the park. Otherwise, you’re just throwing away more money that the city needs desperately for other expenses.

  16. The obvious location is the Jazz District. The city has already put millions of dollars into trying to do something with that area.
