McGonigle's Market Stays Winning Fareway Expansion Farewell Despite Complaints

Kansas City sellout postscript as this grocer fam laughs at 12th & Oak all the way to the bank . . . This one isn't really worth sneaking past the paywall, the link tease is good enough:

Despite sale to Iowa chain, Kansas City OKs expansion at former McGonigle's site

Kansas City officials on Thursday effectively greenlighted an expansion of the former McGonigle's Market after hitting the brakes when they learned the store would sell to an Iowa chain.

  1. Toby Tobin could not put together a weirder smelling batch of fertilizer than this thing. I can understand McGonigle's challenges as large grocers and new concepts at Trader Joe's and Aldi and Whole Foods have perceived high quality at lower prices. But it will be interesting to see how Fareway can fit physically and profitably when they have many grocers surrounding them in a new market for them.

  2. "an out-of-town buyer wants to convert the decades-old, quaint family biz into an 8,500 square foot store with a multitenant 4,500 square foot commercial building plus parking"
So much for the idea of a small, family owned, neighborhood business. Good ole McGonigle just fucked the shit out of that neighborhood. Grab the money and run.

  3. Fareway does very well in Iowa, competing against Hy Vee. They have a meat department second to none, lower prices and excellent customer service. They will do well here.
