Johnson County Going Broke

Local news insight helps politicos and corporate interests target po'folk and multi-family housing but the reality is that the Golden Ghetto is coping with the very same financial hardship which impacts the entire nation.

Example:

Reuters: U.S. household debt tops $14 trillion and reaches new record

Now here's reassuring content reinforcing the misguided pecking order theory that helps maintain middle-class consumer spending habits:

Poverty in Johnson County: Data shows where residents struggle most

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - New data shows more than 32,000 people living below the federal poverty line in Johnson County, with young adults ages 18 to 24 years old making up large segments of the poorer population in certain areas. The data was part of a report released last week by United Community Services of Johnson County.

    1. Your people were struggling so hard when they arrived they had to enslave Africans and steal from Indians to keep from being dirt poor. Now you think you're better than newcomers, arrogance being your most notable skill.

  7. Things are still pretty swell in the real JoCo. The areas where MO and Dotte transplants have infested are JoCo in name only.

  8. Love this poor white denial, very entertaining. Guess you guys don't look at the bankruptcy home listenings. Plenty of "good neighborhoods" make an appearance. But go on believing whatever you want, smarter people profit from your ignorance.

  10. Should have wrote listings. Sorry.

I'm not jealous of anybody but if you think that financial problems are just confined to one section of Johnson County, you're fooling yourself. The bankruptcy rate here is the highest I've ever seen. I also buy repossessed cars and there's a glut of them out here, they're not all from the hood. Plenty of family minivans and SUVs selling out a discount.

Again, believe what you want if it makes you happy. But people are making money on the financial hard times of the entire community.

I'm not trying to prove a point, just trying to do a public service like this blog.

Save your money, don't spend it to keep up with the neighbors or live like the TV tells you. Do what's in your own financial interest.

  11. ^^^ Gross @11:49. What a dumb comment. We're talking about Johnson County, not world history. There are plenty of blacks, latinos, asians, indians and people of all kinds in this community. Get a grip and stay on topic.

  14. These aren't financial hard times. People in good neighborhoods that are in debt have only themselves to blame.

  15. I have lived in Johnson County for ages and most of the people in the massive houses, who I thought were rich, are terribly in debt. I always thought my family's house (a big one by all other standards, I now know) meant we were not doing as well. But we didn't have any debt except for a mortgage that was paid off in 10 years.

The huge neighborhoods (looking at you Nottingham By The Green) are full of debt. Especially student debt. This is why I work my way through college instead of getting loans, now. I don't want to be like them.

  16. Who didn't struggle before age 25? Most peeps south of 135th and over 35 are doing very well indeed.
