States, cities rethink tax incentives after Amazon HQ2 backlash

State and local governments are reconsidering their efforts to use tax incentives to attract major corporations after a decade of mega-deals handed billions of dollars to some of the wealthiest companies in America. Those deals typically involved states, counties and cities giving companies subsidies or allowing them to forgo paying some taxes in return for a pledge to create a certain number of jobs.

  1. Amazon is an awful company to work for. We are very lucky they did not pick this area. Amazon makes tons of money, strangles out all the smaller companies to steal the dollars they make, and then skates on taxes with various loopholes and tax breaks. They are awful and we should strive to never let them move into this area.

  2. Why do we need Amazon when we can throw our money at an endless string of TIF boondogles and tourist hotels?

  5. the article's 10,000 feet overview is undoubtedly (or at least I hope it is) true. but it does not describe the sitch in Mo. Mo continues major corporate welfare at the state level and duh we see it inKCMO all the time. e.g. Mo approved a "deal closing fund" as part of the bills past last session which is nothing but a slush fund to be sucked dry by consultants who are friends with the greitens flunkies left in charge at the department of economic development. -radish

  6. 8:38 your favorite place to shop WalMart did exactly what you say Amazon is doing starting 35 years ago. So has Target where the local creeps can hang around inside the restroom as your daughter is in there. Amazon is only doing what Fingerhut, Sears, Wards, and JC Penny's tried to do for years and failed or is failing in the end. Amazon figured out how to offer wide selection with fast delivery. WalMart was in place to have done just that but failed to do so. Can't default Amazon for figuring out how to do it. Now days and to be honest I don't look that close but I pay sales tax I'm sure on everything I get from Amazon. If large companies getting tax breaks make you mad scream at the losers you voted into office that allow such to happen. If someone offered you freedom from taxes would you not take it? Sure you would. But don't attack Amazon, attack those like Lucas, Cleaver, Davids, Kelly and Parson instead.

What the taxpayers need to be yelling about is making it a law that any company seeking tax breaks has to be approved by the voters before it can take place.
