Macy's Departure To Leave Retail Hole in Prairie Village
By Ian Ritter About 120,000 square feet of retail space will become vacant when Macy's shuts its doors at Prairie Village Shopping Center. The city's mayor, Eric Mikkelson, announced at a city council meeting that the center's owner First Washington Realty, told him that the store will close.
It’ll be torn down and reconfigured into restaurant spaces. The Village is becoming one big food hall.

ReplyDeleteThis is probably the most prime shopping location for the right retailer. It's physical proximity to Mission Hills, Old Leawood, and the increasingly prosperous (thank you tear downs) Prairie Village make makes it a convenient spot for upscale shoppping. Plus, it has more "Kansas City" shops and restaurants than the Plaza which gives it more character than the other destination retail areas in KC. That's what upscale consumers want. Nordstrom would have been a good fit. I can see a similar upscale larger retail store filling this space or a larger scale redevelopment of the South side of the development for more restaurants/shops. Macys leaving is a win win for PV shops and neighbors.

ReplyDeleteIts already been slated for high rise apartments. The owner/developer has noticed the success of condos in old downtown Overland Park, the location at 90th and Metcalf (by 1/2 price books) and with the sky high home prices which fewer can afford - the units will be a sure fire money maker. I wish i could find a way to invest in it. All the good deals are run by limited partnership and they will not let the average Joe invest. But it will be 6 to 10 storys high with pool, food court etc.
