TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT 'SHELL GAME' SALES TAX INCREASE VOTE COMING SOON!!!
Despite Kansas City suffering the impact of a property tax crisis and higher housing costs contradicting the best efforts of activists . . . The rate of local taxation continues to rise.
To wit . . .
FIRST ON TKC: KANSAS CITY PLANS AN EPIC FIRE DEPARTMENT SALES TAX INCREASE VOTE THIS SPRING!!!
The low turnout election is always perfect for raising 12th & Oak cash given that only the most dedicated of all local denizens bother to vote. However, this time around skyrocketing property taxes, public frustration over politicos seemingly powerless fix homeowner complains, and growing concern over constant FD overtime drama make this levy a tough sell.
Here's a look at the money line of the ordinance pushed forward by Council lady Shields:
200037 - "Increasing the imposition of the fire sales tax from one-fourth of one percent (¼%) to one-half of one percent (½%) for the operation of the Fire Department which will include making capital improvements to, and purchasing equipment for, such Department as authorized by Section 321.242 . . ."
We talked to a KICK-ASS KANSAS CITY INSIDERS who understand this stuff better than TKC and they not only lamented the increase but offered an even better perspective on how this cash could be (mis)appropriated . . .
"Yes. I believe they have also included repealing the 2014 election and making this tax increase for 15 years until 2036. Part of this is a backdoor way for the city to be able to fund free bus service by saying we have more revenue from a fire sales tax so we need less general fund money. This 1/4 cent will start at a gross amount of $20 million you then need to subtract the TIFs and other incentives of 20 to 25 percent, so you're down to $15 million. $8 million for (freebie) bus the rest for the fire department."
And so, despite the new year and the new administration the desperate need for more KCMO tax money continues whilst the public struggles to keep up with rising cost of living.
Developing . . .
fire department can also provide free rides.
ReplyDeleteGood start with this one. You might also want to mention that sales tax in some parts of KC is higher than any place in Missouri and hovers around 12%. At that point, you're just daring people to go elsewhere and the cost of doing business is far to prohibitive.
DeleteEndless taxes. Council would be smart to avoid this nonsense. The regressive taxation in KC is out of control. The war against working people continues from the lawyers and consultants.
DeletePeople are fed up with more taxes. VOTE NO!
ReplyDeleteTKC reader outrage. So it'll only pass by 20 points.
DeleteBwhahahahahhahaha!
:(
DeleteNice job Tony. THIS is why you have to come here for local news with the backstory that you will NEVAR get anywhere else.
ReplyDeleteThe issue I see here is if the voters say no will the city just go ahead and put the tax in place anyway? I mean they disregard what the voters say on other issues.
ReplyDeletef*ucking hell. This Quinton just turning out to be just as bad as Sly when it comes to raising taxes and subsidies.
ReplyDeleteKC is overtaxes already. Not voting for this, real fire fighters probably know it's a bad deal too.
ReplyDelete"public safety" sales taxes are little more than a general fund transfer. They promise the firefighters and cops enough of a pay raise to get their support and the rest goes back to the general fund. It happens not only in KC but in almost all the Missouri side suburbs.
ReplyDeleteSomebody wants a bigger house and fancier car
ReplyDeleteShields is out of control and needs to be locked up somewhere in solitary confinement.
ReplyDeleteJust one more of an endless supply of tax scams, dimwit run cities and their dimwit voting citizens, my god, the stupidity is astounding.
ReplyDeleteShields has lost her mind. That fat bitch needs to just go ahead and have a heart attack.
ReplyDeleteAnd we'll be right back after a word from our very own ....
ReplyDeleteMayor Q @QuintonLucasKC
Enjoyed kicking off my weekend with a nice dinner in South Kansas City w/the House, Hamilton, and Gulledge families. Looking forward to starting Championship Sunday this week at @ChurchoftheRez in Leawood to hear @RevAdamHamilton ‘s sermon.
Again thankful I live close to NKC and Gladstone. I don't buy shit in KCMO. Too bad this is not convenient for all folks. Also, Clay County for all its faults, nowhere as f----d up as JACO. NKC may be going down the rat hole with bike lanes on Armour Rd. We'll see.

ReplyDeleteWHAT? THAT'S AN INCREESE OF OVER 700,00%? JUST LET MY HOUSE BIRN.
ReplyDeleteso now yall are just making shit up and posting it? what is this CNN?
ReplyDeleteWait, I thought 1% of all income generated in the city was for public safety.
ReplyDeleteSo we should pay more while 15 firefighters walk around price Chopper choosing what sounds good to eat while the other 15 sleep at the station in Hope's of a fire
ReplyDeleteThey need to somehow get control of the overtime that runs the taxpayers millions of dollars every year

ReplyDeleteYou're being taxed on free bus rides you didn't vote for. Are you really going to vote yes or will you finally put your foot down and vote NO!!!
These fire departments out lollygagging around driving and cruising everywhere has to stop. Take your food to work with you, stop wearing out equipment wasting diesel fuel out shopping for snacks and ho's to pick up and take back to the station. About a week ago saw one departments guys in a freaking WalMart shopping around. And no they weren't buying crap for the station they were shopping for themselves.
