'Can I afford staying in Kansas?' Soaring property taxes prompt calls for state help

When Mary Coffman and her husband moved to Overland Park from Oklahoma City in 2014, they found a comparable home - and expected their property taxes to be about the same, too. They were wrong. The retirees went from paying around $2,600 a year in Oklahoma to $3,200 in Kansas.

  1. Yes people flock to Overland Park wanting a lifestyle among the rich and nice homes but think all that shit comes for free. All those fancy fire engines, nice new looking EMS units and nice shiney fancy marked police cars who show up in 1 to 2 minutes after calling for help don't cost a thing to buy and operate. Go back to Oklahoma where live is cheaper and you get less in return.

Or move to KCMO, where you pay lots more and somehow end up getting LESS.

  3. You can thank Brownback for that. When he was in office he ordered every single property in Kansas to be reevaluated and guess what happened? Turns out they were all worth more than we originally thought. Who would have guessed?

  4. at least there's exceptions for low income and section ape! Push out the people who are working hard to stay here and encourage low income, who adds nothing to the tax base, to stay. WHAT COULD GO WRONG!?

  5. ^^I don't know. They could turn it to an assisted living center. That would be WAY worse!

  6. But developers always seem to get the tax breaks they ask for/

  7. Typical Republican bait and switch.

Elimination of income taxes on LLCs, other income and business tax cuts, special TIFs for developers; all supposedly paid for by growth that never comes.

Then they raise property and sales taxes to make up the difference.

It the GOP were honest about how their tax plans actually worked, they would never win other election.
