SMSD, teachers fail to reach deal on teacher negotiations

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - After months of contract negotiations, including an independent fact-finder, the Shawnee Mission Public School teachers union and district negotiators ended talks Tuesday without reaching a contract. Union leaders are not happy with how talks ended. Teachers have been pushing for months for a pay raise because of additional state funding Shawnee Mission public schools will be receiving.

  5. SMSD teachers get paid very well for the actual work they do perform. And talk about perks. They get so many perks it's all us other job holders and workers who should be demanding to be paid as much as the teachers are making while only working the hours they do. Off most of the summer huge Christmas break not to mention the spring break. If it looks like it's going to snow you can stay home even get MLK day off. They only work 191 days out of the year. So that means they get off 174 days a year. Hell that figure out to just barely working over half the year.

Sorry teachers I don't feel sorry for you at all. You start at around 40k a year to work half a year not counting all the supplemental you could draw which could be another 1 to 7K a year.

  6. I saw where a teacher I know said she made next to nothing teaching in SMSD on another site.I happen to know she is knocking down 50K and more a year teaching over there. My wife makes close to the same and has shit in benefits compared to these teachers. How much do these clowns think they should be paid to work just half a year?

  7. The dropouts above don't realize teacher report on days students are off, work after hours and weekends on lesson planning, grading, answering calls and emails about student progress and difficulties. Some volunteer for after school extra circular activities. Others use those two months in the summer to take graduate classes to improve their skills.

Maybe if you paid more attention in class and amounted to more in your own lives, you wouldn't be jealous. You whiners wouldn't last a day in the classroom.

  8. ^^^ 100% correct, most teachers are putting in 10-12 hour days and are at school three weeks after it ends and three weeks before it starts, most of them are spending their own money for school supplies as well, plus they have to put up with dumbass kids and their even worse arrogant douchebag parents, and 75% of douchebags parents have bad attitudes.

  9. This is misinformation. Teachers do not have to report during winter break and they get two months off in the summer. The report 10-14 days earlier than students. Several members of my family are teachers and so are my friends. I often keep my opinions to myself around then. Most of us with real jobs put in 10-12 hour days too and sometimes 6 days a week too and we aren't protected by a union that keeps us from ever getting fired. Teachers are failures and they cannot survive in the free market. Private schools won't even consider applications from most public school teachers because they know how shit they are.

  10. 4:29 clearly is a butthurt teacher trying to get you to buy into the lie. Teachers still work on avg just 200 days a year. Stop blowing smoke up our asses it's very clear what they are paid and how many days they work. The information is all on the SMSD website including the extra pay for the so called volunteer shit you talk about. Oh by the way when you volunteer for something don't later bitch about not being paid. Volunteering as a rule means you agree to do something while not being paid. Also teachers are not the only ones who have to take outside classes in continuing education as related to the job. About 90% of the workforce has to do it at nights since we don't get the whole freaking summer off to do so.

  11. Maybe if you had a union - you wouldn't be required to work 10-12 hour days, six days a week, with crappy benefits, and the threat of firing at anytime for any reason.

Unions are what ushered in 8 hour days, 5 day work weeks, employer supplied health insurance, pensions, safety rules, elimination of child labor, etc.

Your anger is misplaced. You're really upset with your own employer.

BTW, while you're at it, I'll have fries with my burger.

  12. Teachers work 10 - 12 hours a day? Funny I go to work and drive by a school at 6:30 AM. After work I drive by the same school at about 4:30 PM and both times the parking lot is empty except maybe a school district truck or two in the morning and a automobile or two in the evening. Are there only two teachers at that school?
I am married to a retired teacher and none of the claims about working days adds up. My wife tried to tell me the same thing then one year I bought a calendar. Every day I asked her how work was (she complained) and I knew when she left and got home and I wrote it down. At the end of the school year she told me how many days and hours she worked and was wrong by dozens of days and long on hours by and average of three hours per day. She doesn't challenge me on facts anymore.

  13. Figures a fat faggot like you would want fries

The issue has nothing to do with unions, but good strawman. I'm sure reddit and facebok would be impressed. The issue is how teachers are already paid more than they should be due to working less days. There are 261 business days in a year and teachers work 191, which is 70 days less than what any other job would command. That's 70 vacation days yet teachers, who make between 50k-70k average in JOCO, want to be paid even more despite working 70 less days than every other profession.

  14. How about get rid of the unions that protect absolutely worthless teachers and OVERPAID ADMINISTRATORS and actually allow market competition to dictate pay received based upon value given. It will increase both the quality of reachers and teacher pay rates. The "unintended consequence" of unions, (who protect teachers from everything, including not getting fired for being worthless) is the teachers have no authority in the classroom and are forced to teach down to the "lowest common denominator" in their classes. In one of the "highest rated" public schools in town, there were only 3 or 4 teachers worthy of the title "Teacher" that any of my 4 children had over each of their 4 years. The only reason the school is "highly rated" is because it is in a very wealthy district and parents pay for tutors, ACT/SAT Prep classes, and a greater % of its grauates go to out-of-state universities. (Not to mention they schmooze teachers and administrators and "advocate" (read that as THREATEN and FIGHT teachers, administrators, etc.) for their kids when they don't earn the grades their parents expect.) True capitalistic competition would solve most of the societal ills that appear on these pages.
