KCPD HIP-HOP MOVIE: CELEBRATE COMMUNITY OUTREACH OR CRINGE?!?!

Here's the premise . . .

"Disarmed is phase 1 of 3 for the Kansas City Community Film Project. The purpose of this project is to use art as a way to bridge gaps, breakdown barriers, and produce peaceful outcomes between communities. From Kansas City, Missouri we plan to launch globally.

"Phase 1 focuses on the relationship between the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) and the served community. This video acts as a demonstration of the power of art and its ability to bring people together and have discussion.

"Phase 2 of the project will be a trailer for phase 3, a full feature film. Each phase of the project follows the same approach in utilizing real community members, primarily local artists, from all demographics. Together we will work to achieve both understanding and artistic elevation."

And so given that this blog community is hyper critical and most of our prolific commenters never to do anything halfway creative beyond coming up with new spellings for racial and ethnic epithets . . .

WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THIS KCPD HIP-HOP CLIP?!?!

  1. I LIKE IT!

Intended for audiences much younger than TKC readers and might help a lot of people look at police differently. There have been worse PSAs, this was kind of cool.

  5. Yes another frosty community art project taxpayers have to pay for.

  6. Which agency is paying for this? I used to be a grants writer for the National Endowment for the Arts--and this hokey grant app would have been laughed out of the room.

Stiff and artificial concept. No audience would watch it. No theatre would exhibit it. Not even Tivoli at the Nelson, even if the city paid them to do it!

KCPD is not ready for their closeup, Mr. DeMille.

  7. my trust and faith in police officers has been renewed. thank you.

  8. To be continued...? I hope not!

Hey, I love creative artistic people and encourage free expression, but I fear this wasn't free from involuntary taxpayer support what with the first-responders and their vehicles, etc.

Major disconnect #1, the appeal of a rap battle is confined to a narrow demographic, everybody else tunes out. I see that this was written and directed by Khalid Abdulqaadir, whose last name rings a bell.

Everyone is presumed innocent, but it's helpful to know something about who you're dealing with on collaborative projects.

Khalid's father, Mujahid Abdulqaadir, was an associate of Zacarias Moussaoui (the so-called 9/11 20th hijacker) when they both attended the same mosque in Norman Oklahoma. Following the 9/11 attack, Mujahid Abdulqaadir was taken into custody on a federal weapons charge.

Khalid Abdulqaadir has previously reported in interviews that he himself has been interviewed by FBI agents approximately 20 times or more.

Excerpt from a DEC 2001 Washington Post article:
"Moussaoui, a 33-year-old French citizen of Moroccan descent, arrived in Oklahoma 10 months ago, and soon began asking about starting a crop dusting company, the indictment notes. Suspected terrorist ringleader Mohamed Atta did the same thing in Florida.

Moussaoui, who like Atta was learning to fly, bought videos simulating an aircraft flight deck last June from the Ohio Pilot Store, the same place where Atta made a similar purchase six months earlier.

Moussaoui earned a master's degree from Southbank University in Britain, according to the indictment, and he traveled widely, including to an al Qaeda-affiliated training camp in Afghanistan.

Earlier this year Moussaoui spent two months in Pakistan, prosecutors state, then arrived in Norman on a student visa to attend the Airman Flight School. Moussaoui had signed up months before using an e-mail account in Malaysia, claiming to be a marketing consultant with a Malaysian company called Infocus Tech."

Now, back to the video, I don't like rap, so I'm not a fan.
