TKC QUESTION: DID MAYOR QUINTON LUCAS WIN HIS 1ST KANSAS CITY SNOWFALL?!?!

We've driven on local streets and have our own opinion but we're more interested in what our blog community thinks . . .

DID MAYOR Q PROVE SUCCESSFUL IN MANAGING THE FIRST MAJOR SNOWFALL OF HIS ADMINISTRATION?!?!

His tweets from aboard a snowplow weren't novel but most politicos only perform the stunt well into their 2nd term.

Knowing what a mess this town's roads can become during the winter, his social media attention might have warmed hearts and minds.

Here's AN UPDATE FROM MAYOR QUINTON LUCAS on the topic of snow plowing along with an more deets and highlights from his latest newsletter . . .

An Update on Snow Removal Efforts

I've been working closely with City leaders to ensure that we're prepared for this winter weather — and our Kansas City snow crews have been out since late last week working hard to treat our streets in anticipation of this snow storm.

This morning, I participated in a great ride-along with 28-year City veteran, Ray, who showed me what it takes to get our roads and bridges plowed. I tweeted our ride-along live – check it out here.

If you park on a City street, please make sure to only park on the north or west side of the street and not to park on signed emergency snow routes, so snow removal crews can do their job. See where snow plows have already been in real-time, at kcmo.gov/snow.

Passing & Signing KC Tenants Rights Package

After months of work, multiple legislative drafts and several Special Committee on Housing Policy hearings, the City Council overwhelmingly passed our KC Tenants Rights package on Thursday. Our entire community should be proud of this package and what it will mean for the nearly half of all Kansas Citians who rent their homes. Since becoming mayor, my office has worked with KC Tenants on this package, which demands safe, quality and affordable housing for Kansas Citians – and I’m tremendously proud of the result. This process is an outstanding example of how legislating should always be done: through crafting smart and deliberate policy, providing ample opportunity for community input, and compromising to bring both tenants and landlords to the table.

Growing up, my family experienced bouts of homelessness, and I know how it feels to have a hole in your window for weeks in the dead of winter, with seemingly no recourse. These policies will change how we do business here in Kansas City, and will be a national blueprint for empowering tenants in communities across the country.

I was proud to sign this package into statute on Friday.

Hosting #YOUandMayorQ: 5th District Town Hall

On Saturday, I visited the Marlborough Community Center in the Fifth District for a great community discussion with more than 75 residents. We discussed our recently-passed Zero Fare Transit initiative and KC Tenants Rights package, as well as the continued need to improve existing infrastructure throughout our community and strengthen basic city services.

Thanks to Fifth District Councilwoman Ryana Parks-Shaw and Fifth District Councilman-at-Large Lee Barnes for attending and speaking with community members, as well.

I appreciate that so many City leaders attended the meeting to hear feedback directly from Fifth District residents, including: Acting City Manager Earnest Rouse, Assistant City Manager Rick Usher, City Auditor Doug Jones, Neighborhoods and Housing Services Director John Wood, Parks Director Terry Rynard, Solid Waste Division Director Michael Shaw, and Assistant to the City Manager and 311 Director Jean Ann Lawson.
YOU & Mayor Q townhall meetings are an essential component of my administration – ensuring that I have regular, direct contact with our fellow Kansas City residents. I know that every district and neighborhood is different and has its own unique wants, needs and personality, which is why I travel to a different district every month to host a community discussion. We promote these meetings on social media and through my newsletter every month – so stay tuned, and I hope to see you at next month’s meeting!

  1. streets seemed somewhat better but not perfect. The problems isn't just the snow. It's the potholes, sidewalks and more structural issues.

    1. Some nice photos might fool a few people but it'll take more than that to sell his next tax increase. Sorry but a lot of this is just PR and spin.

Most voters were against the tenant bill of rights.

As for the community meetings, I applaud him for doing that but it shouldn't be something special. Every elected official should answer to their constituents.

    2. He's not running for reelection. Looking for an appointment or higher office. This is all just a practical joke on KC voters. Sad thing is, there wasn't really a choice between him or Jolie.

  2. Still 10x better than Sly. Sorry.

  3. So many whiners on this blog. The streets were fine but we only got about three inches of snow. The airport had more but they were measuring in the middle of a field. Snowfalls in KC can get much worse and KCMO basically had to shut down on Monday.

  4. He wasn't better than sly because no one took sly seriously and that was good for everyone. Had sly been around for the tenants rights thing, it never would have happened. Same with the free and less safe bus debacle. I'd rather have sly for that reason alone

  5. I agree. Its a fail if the city has to shut down to care for their roads.

  6. People in the Metro area don't know how lucky they are, many northern City's it snows a half a foot or more a,Couple of times a week until March ,Or in Denver Many feet of snow a,month.

  9. It’s a fail but better than Sly’s complete and total failure. I spent all day driving in OPKS and not a slick spot on my commute. Back to Kansas City - streets still ice packed. Thank God for warmer weather. Mother Nature will resolve this without City Officials.

  11. Hopefully Quinton took many selfies.

  12. How come the guy sitting next to Q at the signing is still homeless and living in his car?

  13. If only empty hype, selfies, unbelievable PR, and endless pandering to one group or another would clear the streets and melt the snow, smiling selfies Lucas would be a true hero.
Instead he's just the latest con man empty suit at 12th and Oak.
    What's "free" tomorrow?

  14. Agreed. So far 10x better than Sly. Of course, not a tall bar, but this is a blue town after all.

  15. Photo Ops don't get the streets cleaned. Our street is a mess.

  16. NO

    This was bad.

As of Tuesday night the residential roads are still snow packed, icy and needing salt. Some main roads seem neglected.

Having only day shifts for the side roads doesn’t cut it.

Anyone else notice that roads around entities that got TIFs were well cared for comparatively?

  17. My dealings with Kansas City architect Matt Veasman is that he is dishonest.
