Young people with Sunrise Movement Kansas City to strike from classes and workplaces as part of a global call for immediate climate action
Kansas City, Missouri, December 6 2019, -- Local students and young adults from all over the Kansas City metro area will host two separate actions across state lines on Friday, December 6th, as part of a nationwide effort that continues September’s record-breaking global climate strike. In Missouri, the Kansas City hub of the Sunrise Movement will join students as they walk out from classes and rally at 12:00 PM at Kansas City City Hall. Sunrise Kansas City and supporters will call for the City Council and Mayor Quinton Lucas to support an upcoming resolution for a Green New Deal for Kansas City.
WHAT: Kansas City youth from all over the metro area will participate in a worldwide strike demanding political support of a Green New Deal. The Green New Deal is a 10-year plan to transition our economy to 100% renewable energy while providing millions of good jobs in the process. Crucial to the Green New Deal is inclusion and respect of indigenous land and sovereignty, ensuring a just transition for communities on the frontlines of the crisis, protecting and restoring our planet’s biodiversity, and implementing sustainable agriculture . . .

WHY: On September 20th, 2019, over 700 Kansas City residents participated in the largest climate mobilization in Kansas City history and demanded a global response to the ongoing climate emergency . Many local politicians attended, including Mayor Quinton Lucas and Kansas City Councilman Eric Bunch, who both publicly signed the Green New Deal Pledge to support policies that transition the local economy to 100% renewable energy by 2030. In Missouri, young people with Sunrise Movement KC are demanding that the rest of the council sign the Green New Deal Pledge and will also push Lucas and Bunch to follow through.
