NEWSFLASH!!! KANSAS CITY AREA PLAN REDUX RUINS NEIGHBORHOODS!!!

Optimistic and hopeful residents believe that new Kansas City area plans will help to strengthen building codes and provide a comprehensive vision of how to build communities moving forward.

TKC reality check . . .

WE'VE HEARD BACK FROM NEIGHBORHOOD INSIDERS AND CITY HALL REWORKING 'AREA PLANS' BASICALLY BETRAYS DECADES OF WORK FROM VOLUNTEERS!!!

From infill double talk to laissez-faire biz practices . . . KCMO has always been an "OPEN CITY" for sketchy characters and their biz schemes.

Here's the money line and a great description of how this all works . . .

"The City has completed area plans for all of Kansas City and is now in the process of reviewing and updating them . . . The boundary issue was brought up at the first steering committee meeting and the planners said there would be time during the process to discuss it. Of course it hasn’t been discussed at any meetings and they’re even trying to say they didn’t know anyone wanted it changed, even though the Coalition and Center Planning sent letters in support. Knowing nothing seems to be one of their arguments for not doing anything. The other is that it would cause the planning department additional work. They’re all a bunch of bureaucrats without any sense of humanity.

"While I said the City is “updating” the plans, that’s actually a City term. What it means in real terms is that they’re scrapping the first one and simply using the new one. There will be no looking at the first plan to see what needs to be saved. Of course the planners, who are supposed to be guiding the process, say the community can keep whatever it wants as long as it makes the suggestions. Guess guidance only goes so far."

Read more about how this is process is screwing over Hickman Mills. Meanwhile, not much has changed at 12th & Oak despite the new administration . . . Political connections and influence are still the first rule of the development game whilst City Hall pushed gentrification and irrational exuberance for the downtown real estate bubble built mostly on sponsored content hype, tweets and public relations desperately seeking greater fools.

Developing . . .

  1. I think there's a little bit more hope than you're letting on. People who are involved in the process have a chance to speak up and tell KCMO what they want for their neighborhoods. Codes need to be revamped because circumstances change. The same rules that applied 10 years ago might not work for today. Bringing neighborhoods up to date should be a goal for EVERYONE.

Chimpy (8:51) doesn't need to worry. Doesn't own anything except a keyboard, lives in mama's basement, no real skin in anything. Whole purpose in dismal little life is making asinine comments here in a futile attempt for recognition.

No need to be an elected official to be a leader in your community. Join your neighborhood/HOA board and lead local.

  16. So not only do we have to pay developers to build here now they want to give them exclusive rights do whatever they want too? Unfuckingbelievable.

  17. At the national level, there is a movement for change, but locally people are not even aware of what's going on, and the few people who vote in local elections seem to like the corruption.

  18. It amazes me how comments get made that aren't even related to the article in question.

Codes may change over time, but that doesn't mean an entire plan has to be thrown out. Not everything is about codes.

Also, if you actually click on the link from Tony's you'll see there's a bigger issue for Hickman Mills which is a historical community. The whole area was annexed by the city as a community and now city hall is dividing it in two and refuses to make any promised changes. The people at city hall have no buy in to what they're doing. They're simply putting in their time here so they can get a better job somewhere else.

  19. Those planners only know areas by what's on a map. They have no actual idea of what's in each area or what issues the community is facing. They don't know and they don't care that they don't know. It's simply a job to them. Finish an area plan? Check it off the to do list.
