KSHB -- Report: Additional staff could increase KCPD homicide closure rate

Deets:

"People are dying in our streets and our clearance rate is not even at the national average this year," KCPD Chief Rick Smith said at the recent Board of Police Commissioners meeting. Through the National Public Safety Partnership, KCPD brought in two experts from Los Angeles to look over the department's efforts on reducing violent crime. It led to a 10-page report with a list of recommendations, starting with staffing. Currently, there are six homicide detectives with a supervisor at each of the four squads. The experts suggest adding two more detectives and assigning a crime analyst to each squad."Time is critical," David Bernard, a retired KCPD homicide sergeant (said) . . . "

  3. Here we go again... we need more funding and people. That is the excuse of nearly every bankrupt business. When will they learn to do more with less?

  5. The Police in Kansas City,Missouri answer more calls than any other Department in the State of Missouri with minimal staffing!

  6. Split the city North/South..mabey. Focus on real crime. DEFINATLEY ARREST MURDERS AND PROSECUTE MURDERS. WOULD LOWER THE SCORES.

  7. The structure and management of this department is an absolute failure. Is it any coincidence that it's the only Police department in the state not under local control, and they also have one of the lowest rates for solving homicides? the fact that you have a police chief desperately afraid of any local accountability is red flag enough for me to wonder what he's afraid of. when people In government are afraid of accountability, you need to wonder why.

I genuinely feel bad for the men and women who are police officers about having to toil under poor leadership like this. they are the ones that are taking the blame for the failure of their department to modernize and keep pace with the demands of the city.
