KANSAS CITY TENANTS 'BILL OF RIGHTS' PASSES COMMITTEE AMID MASSIVE EAST SIDE PUBLIC TESTIMONY TURNOUT!!!

Opponents of more Kansas City housing regulations were simply outnumbered for the public discussion of a tenant "Bill Of Rights" that was approved tonight by the City Hall housing committee.

To wit . . .

KC TENANTS WON TONIGHT WITH A TURNOUT OF HUNDREDS DEMANDING MORE STRINGENT HOUSING REGULATION FROM CITY HALL!!!

Here's the word:

"Housing committee just passed our Tenants Bill of Rights resolution out of committee and recommended for a vote in full council!!! Ordinance still being debated now."

Landlord home provider criticism:

"(KC Tenants' Bill Of Rights) creates a lengthy, expensive process for screening tenants for Felony convictions, and Eviction or Rental History. The language as it stands is potentially creating a situation for housing providers to be violating Fair Housing by making written standards become subjective and not applied equally . . ."

Response from another person watching this argument:

"@KCMO Reject KC Tenants Bill of rights legislation as it is too radical too communistic, and will create higher rents and more homelessness!"

Celebration and perspective from the debate:

"If being a landlord is so taxing, maybe don’t base how you make your living on other people’s very basic needs BILL PASSES TO CITY COUNCIL! Win!"

And so we invite our blog community to consider this argument as it heads to the full Council this week . . .

WHO DO YOU SUPPORT??? KC TENANTS OR HOME PROVIDERS?!?! TELL US WHY!!!

You decide . . .

Comments

  1. We've got to talk impact. This could basically chase a lot of rentals out of KC and make the housing stock even more unaffordable. To a large extent that's already happening. You can legislate affordability in a free market.

This is a disaster waiting to happen for KC.

    2. KC tenants are doing the right thing. The arguments of these so-called "Libertarian" landlords don't make sense because they're getting subsidized by the government too. They're just fighting for their margins, not for liberty.

  2. Um business people and landlords outnumbered KC Tenants.. who was about 10% if the crowd.

  5. Don't make your living off other people's basic needs? What nonsense. Who would provide housing if they can't make money? Heck, who would farm or cook or go through years of medical school to become a doctor? Socialist nonsense!

  7. The mob again rolls over the cowardly electeds in KCMO.
    And the unintended consequences follow.
    Again.

  10. They think their is not enough affordable now, the unintended result will less affordable housing. I guess they want New York City rental rates.

  11. Instead of fighting withe the landlords, why don’t they just move out to the southern part of Johnson County? There are some real nice looking places to rent and the crime rate is much lower.

  12. The rigged committee voted it out but will the full council vote for it.

  13. What about affordable taxes and water rates? Can we have those Mayor?

  15. The landlords and the tenants would be better off with efforts to incentivize efficiency. Low hanging fruit include high-efficiency toilets and faucets. Winterizing a home would save quite a bit of money and the home would be more comfortable. LED light bulbs use 90% less energy.

One consequence of the initiatives will be the proliferation of rental agents to navigate the rental process. The landlord with a few properties will not have the wherewithal. The added cost will be the equivalent of one month rent. The rental process will be more efficient and more effective so the renters with financial resources will be prioritized. The same process works with real estate. The better financed renters will end up in the better quality housing. The current process is frustrating as the options are individual homeowners or property managers and neither are good with the actual process to rent the properties.

  17. I'm so glad I won't ever have to deal with a landlord again. Buy a cheap house in the hood. While I support tenants having more rights, this goes too far. No way council will pass this. The only reason it passed committee is because they wanted to give them a chance to celebrate before it gets shot down in council. The "Bill of Rights" is unsustainable. Landlords shouldn't have section 8 shoved down their throat. I really don't want Shaniqua and her brood anywhere near my house.

  18. Go by any " Project" and you quickly realize what happens at affordable housing. Count all the new Suvs , Chrysler 300s with 8k in wheels , etc in the parking lot. Behind 1 honest hard working person needing affordable housing is ten thousand scam artists that are unable to use common sense purchases, endorse illegal activity and vices. If you don't know where the Projects are, go to a Walmart on a weekend night , hang out at where they are getting their nails done and follow them home.

  19. @9:55pm asking what about affordable taxes and water rates:
    The answer is NO.
Those are just a couple of the ways that KCMO tries to generate enough cash to think they're able to give more stuff away.
    Nothing is "free".
And you can't hope for decent street maintenance, snow removal, or an effective 311 phone system either.
The "governing body" in KCMO has no agenda or priorities. They are simply weather vanes that spin around and point in the direction of any crowd who makes the most noise.
    Or helps fund their campaigns.
Just keep that in mind and you'll guess right every time.

No, 9:04, maybe free bus rides, but then you'd probably object to that, too.

  21. Maybe there's more to this socialism push then we are not considering. Look at all of the people who showed up down there claiming to be victims, as if they were slaves on a plantation! And what do they want, not a better economy where they can make money and get themselves out of their situation which would take their own actions. But demand! The government do something for them because they've been brought up to believe and understand the only people who can help them is the government.

  22. Funny thing about these people holding signs crying for decent housing. They had decent housing and they just shot their selves in the foot. They just passed lesser housing and higher rent for their selves. Sometimes ignorance is not so bliss. The good news is...this will run a lot of them out of town and that's a good thing.

  23. "Maybe there's more to this socialism push then we are not considering."

Yes, there is. People are tired of socialism for the rich and cutthroat capitalism for the rest of us.

  24. Build some luxurious tower in Nob Town and make them all live together there. From the looks of the photo, I wouldn’t want any of that trash within 10 miles of my house. Including the gal on the front row whose tits are on her lap.

  28. 7:43, I will assure you that any garage in my neighborhood is more than you and your rent rat buddies will ever aspire to. The only renters that are not typically riff raff are the ones that live in nice enough places to price out the great unwashed like yourself and your activist buddies. As for the rest, beggars can’t be choosers.

  30. 9:17 - How about you spend less time on this blog acting like you know some shit about some shit! and get over here and fix the fucking sink you have been promising to fix in the dump I rent from your greedy slumlord ass!!, and how about that "black" mold? we can call it "white" mold if thats what it will take for you to get it removed! - I am your WHITE renter you rasist cocksucker, obviously you hate black people, who cares? Fix my shit or I am going to get black people to sublease this shithole - got your attention now huh?. Sink bitch! - fix it this week, better yet REPLACE it once you unclog it, I am thinking instead of a 6" deep sink you got for free off Craigslist, you replace it with a nice sink from Lowes something with color.. a Corian sink possibley - how about a black sink..10-12 inches deep instead of the marred white 6 inch one you got for free! I bet if you ask your wife she would go with the 10-12 in deep Black sink if she had the choice. Doesnt matter you wont replace or fix shit because thats what landlords like you do!

We got it easy here, we never run any calls and we have a strip joint less than 10K feet from the station, bro you know I know who you are, because you had nastier tiities in your face last weekend - I told you not to fuck that chick who was 60, but you were drunk AF and YOU said "My wife is out of town and this is my chance at some side hustle- its either floppy old titties or a cock in if ass back at the station". 37. Landlord Bill of Rights:
    Pay your rent on time
    You can't trash MY property
    Don't rent a place you can't afford
Don't commit crimes in MY property
You are not allowed to house freeloading adults that aren't on the lease.
Wait a minute...I can't enforce these rights in KCMO? Bye Felicia! Kansas here I come!....(abandons depreciated property to later become squatter trap house)
Here's a neat idea KCMOre dwellers- Don't rent a shit hole because you spent all your money on cigs, lottery tickets, and rented a big screen in the first place. If your places sucks- MOVE OUT! That's what the hard working wage earners do in KCK. Sometimes it even means the entire household works, rather than trying to only make it off grandma's social security or cousin's disability!- YIKES!
