KANSAS CITY TAX FIGHTERS REMIND MAYOR QUINTON LUCAS OF HIS TAX SUBSIDY CAMPAIGN PROMISES AS WADDELL & REED DOWNTOWN HQ DEAL ABRUPTLY REVISED BUT STILL PENDING!!!

TIF Watch shares a bit of local low-tax lobbying and then offers this morning dream . . .

"A modest proposal: that tax incentive plans be independently verified, that developers negotiate in good faith, that deals not be rushed through, and that elected leaders work hardest on behalf of citizens of limited means."

Thing of it is, Mayor Q basically agreed with these kind of ideas when he first ran for office . . .

Now the slightly skinnier Waddell & Reed deal remains in flux for another week.

Developing . . .

  2. W&D made over 200 million dollars of profit last year. I fail to understand how giving away tax dollars to this company is productive in KCMO. When a government entity gives incentives to a company they are stealing that money from several sources but the biggest victim is the local school districts. If there is a need, which there isn't, for incentives the money going to schools, police and fire should be excluded.
This company is just robbing the KCMO community and the mayor and council are enabling them to do so.

Hey there! Are you a hunky developer, flush with cash and in need of excessive tax incentives to insure your project is a slam dunk? Call Quinton now!

(disclaimer: bribes are illegal, but campaign contributions (pay for play) are greatly appreciated and rewarded)

To truly understand Kansas City politics, and I mean this, you must appreciate how deeply local pols crave the approval of corporate attorneys named Ken who specialize in “structuring innovative financing solutions in the capital markets" and order $48/pour Scotch at JJs

  6. "I don't see why waddell and reed needs to given incentives to move to Kansas City"

Well first off, the way KC is being run nowadays everyone is going to need an incentive to live or work in KCMO.

More seriously though, KCMO needs a lot more jobs downtown. Waddell and Reed can just stay in Overland Park and considering most of its employees probably live there you're getting zero tax revenue at all and no jobs. Trying to get the most jobs in a city limit should be a city gov'ts biggest goal. The city gets it's one percent from every employee, plus a lot of extra taxes and the employees will spend a lot of money at lunches downtown where the tax rate is really high. Plus maybe a few younger employees get motivated cross the state line to live. Waddell and Reed has hundreds of million dollars for Overland Park and Kansas. KCMO would be stupid not to try and get this. It's long term

  7. I hope Waddle & Reed cancels their plans to come to KC, then KC schools and taxing jurisdictions won't get a single dime. Serves them right.

Actually, the biggest goal of a municipal government is to work to provided an environment which is positive and healthy for business, residents, and visitors, all three.
If a community is provided some high degree of safety, well-maintained streets and sidewalks, dependable affordable utilities, common sense planning and zoning, reasonable regulations, and all the rest of the basics regularly provided by municipalities throughout the metro, businesses will voluntarily locate there. It's good business.
The marketplace and organizations like the Chamber are the most realistic factors in attracting business, not mindless governmental "incentives".
Lucas and the gang are taken for suckers just like their Sly and the endless line of KCMO elected who have come before them.
And the taxpaying public continues to get screwed.
