Kansas City Council Unanimously Votes To Get Rid Of Bus Fares

Kansas City is poised to become the largest city in the country to eliminate bus fares. The Kansas City Council on Thursday enthusiastically endorsed the idea, voting unanimously to direct the city manager to identify up to $8 million from the city budget to fund free bus service.

  1. Note to self: Most people lose respect for things that are provided free to them.

When things are given away free of charge, the intrinsic message is that the product/service is not valued, inferior, and deserves no respect.

Prediction: Violence, graffiti, and destruction of property will all increase in relation to city bus service.

  3. Wow!
It takes a whole lot of political courage to vote to provide a very expensive, poorly-managed, and under-utilized service to the public for FREE!
Not so much responsibility, knowledge of basic arithmetic, or common sense, though.
Is the KCMO secret budget slush fund really THAT big?
    Another "first" for KCMO.
Leading the nation in free buses, outlawing gay conversion therapy, and homicides.
    Momentum!

  4. You would think these fools would figure out how to pay for something BEFORE they decide to do it....what idiots running this place.

  5. Hey. We're going to do something to help people who really need it. Get over yourselves.

  6. "Kansas City Councilwoman Katheryn Shields, who chairs the city’s finance committee, says $8 million for free busses, means $8 million less for other services.

“Because I know there's not $3 million, $5 million or $8 million sitting around,” Shields told KCUR."

And yet we can give Waddell and Reed $62 mil for their new building. Weird.

  7. Welcome to Bernie City where everything is FREE! Woo Hoo! I don’t have a problem giving free bus fare to the elderly and disabled, but if you don’t fall into one of those categories and still can’t afford bus fare there’s a problem. Especially if you can afford booze, drugs, cigarettes, fake nails or hair, tattoos or expensive cell phones.
