Jackson County Update On Property Tax Assessment Appeals

Another courthouse note sent out this evening offers news for taxpayers waiting on more info from the Courthouse.

Board of Equalization Status Update

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Over the past few weeks, the Jackson County Assessment Department has been asked for the status of appeals to the Board of Equalization (BOE). Since appeals are filed and processed by BOE staff, the Assessment Department was unable to provide accurate and current status reports on the process. The Assessment Department offered to assign staff to assist the BOE in entering any unprocessed appeal applications.

After reviewing the unprocessed appeal applications that were submitted either by mail or in-person, Assessment staff requested access to an email account managed by BOE staff to determine if there were any further unprocessed appeal applications. Last week, the Assessment Department gained access to the email account and found that there were approximately 8,600 “unread” emails at that time. The Assessment Department has assigned staff members who are currently reviewing and processing these emails. Any properly filed appeals that are discovered will be accepted and processed accordingly.

The Assessment Department will provide an update to the BOE on the status of all appeals as soon as possible.

  1. Since these appeals are questioning the Assessment Department's work isn't it a little hinky for Assessment staff to try and get involved in processing appeals? Perhaps if the county got with the 21st Century, appeals could be done online and be automatically processed.

  3. August 6

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jackson County announced Tuesday that nearly $562,000 will be appropriated to the Board of Equalization as it continues to navigate the fallout from a controversial property assessment process.

The county will use $561,854 from the 2019 Assessment Fund to bump up Board of Equalization members’ pay and set aside money to hire additional staff, including the possibility of adding hearing officers.

What happened? Where did the rest of the money go?

  4. Good grief. Our appeals should not in any way be handled, or mishandled by the Assessors office. Basically, this process is being further corrupted by the Assessors office, the originator of the issues before us. What an absolute clusterfuck.

  5. 8600 unread emails as of 12-23, this is unbelievable, and totally unacceptable why didn’t the county executive know what this and fix it? heads should roll #Fire Frank

  6. The 8600 emails are stuck in with Hillary's 30,000 deleted emails.

  7. The BOE staff is like two or three people. Not near enough people to deal with Assessment's royal screw-up.

  8. Only seven comments on the biggest clusterfuck to ever hit this city.

    That says a lot.

  9. Exactly, 7:06. People check out mentally when the puzzle involves crunching numbers. And Democrats, especially, are more prone to just play the victim. they don't dig in and fight. They love bitching more. Can do that with a beer in one hand, and dictating into their cell with the other.

They barely and rarely vote, let alone support a candidate, with money or time, or God forbid, run for office.

The offices that garner the least publicity include county legislature and state legislature. Yet those have the most impact on our daily lives.

I'm so grateful that I escaped Jackson County. It is a zoo here in Johnson County, but still tolerable. And close to the Glenwood Arts, to escape and go to a decent movie once a week, where folks don't talk back to the screen like they do at Ward Parkway.

I reminded my new state rep, "Second prize is TWO terms in Topeka." The same goes for Jeff City, or the county legislature.

When I wrote my book about KC for Doubleday, with Walt Bodine,in 1976, I think one in six jobs in KC was working for the government. What is the percentage now? Someone here please look that up please? It's not sustainable, which is why electeds keep futzing with the property tax and mill levies, that no one understands or could explain, even if they DID put down their beer.

The appraisal process is a giant collision of unsustainable expectations. How can a group behind the scenes stoke the smoking lurching engine of socialism --by pouring in homeowner equity to keep the train a runnin.

  10. Well that was a downer here the morning that we celebrate Amazon and Baby Jesus tonite. But Tracy is right.

  11. Good one, Tracy.
    And great one, 8:20.

Love the image of bald Jeff Bezos, as the new world savior.

And of course, he doesn't pay any taxes. No tribute to Caesar.

  13. Can you even imagine how UNFUN a job it is to work in the Jackson County assessment division?

A job given to someone as a Christmas plum, a patronage job.

Where they expect to work as little as possible, but hey, it pays their mortgage. And now there is all this media scrutiny?

Quick, bury the 8600 emails you never bothered to open...here comes that bitch from Ch. 5!!!

  14. Thank you, Tony--for posting this story.

Tho I did read the one about Mahomes' girlfriend first...

  16. Some things in history are marked by a calamitous event. The tsunami that wipes out an entire town. Or Pearl Harbor, that catapults us into war.

But here in Jackson County, this appraisal mess, seemingly unaddressed, might be our Silent Night.

  17. What's it gonna take, Jackson County homeowners?
When are ya gonna wake up?

If it weren't for some award-winning blonde on TV5, who just moved to town 3 years ago, and Tony, would you even know about this?

  18. Question--
did ANY reader of TKC at least file a protest on their appraisal?

    ReplyDelete
  19. And where is Chuck on this mess?

A big appraisal should merit some big words, shouldn't it?
