The highlight of the latest digital newsletter form this Kansas City political power player . . .

"The decision to target poor and working-class Americans by implementing more burdensome and costly requirements to qualify for food stamps is a sad statement of this administration’s priorities and antithetical to the American values we hold so dearly."

Cleaver Hosts Midwest Summit and House passes voting rights legislation

Hello Friends,

After spending Thanksgiving with family, friends, and constituents across the nation, Congress returned to Washington this week to continue our work for the American people. I know the media has been acutely focused on the impeachment hearings as the House of Representative’s inquiry moves forward, but there are a few other important developments I want to make sure you are aware of. This week, I want to report to you a major event I hosted in Washington, an important development in the fight for voting rights in America, and a disappointing decision brought by the administration.

On Tuesday evening, I was proud to welcome local stakeholders and financial institutions from the Heartland to participate in the Midwest Banking Summit in our nation’s capital. Co-hosted the event by Reps. Wm. Lacy Clay (D-MO) and Joyce Beatty (D-OH), the summit was an opportunity for three Financial Services Subcommittee Chairs to receive direct input from local institutions on ways in which Congress can reform our financial system to better serve our Midwestern communities. We discussed several issues that are critically important to our region such as creating more affordable housing, expanding Americans’ access to credit, and strengthening the Community Reinvestment Act so that we can construct the kinds of incentives that will lead to greater investment in our local neighborhoods. It is absolutely imperative that members of Congress receive this kind of input from local stakeholders, and the information gathered from the summit will help focus my work and the work of other subcommittee chairs as we prioritize issues for the rest of this year and moving into 2020.

Today, I am excited to relay that the House of Representatives passed H.R. 4, the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2019. This critical bill will finally restore the Voting Rights Act (VRA) to full strength following the Supreme Court’s disastrous decision to gut the VRA in the Shelby County v. Holder. Since that decision in 2013, over 20 states have enacted restrictive statewide voting laws—from unfair voter ID laws to purging voter rolls—which have been shown to disproportionately impact communities of color. The right to vote in free and fair elections is the cornerstone of our democracy, and H.R. 4 will ensure that every eligible American voter has the opportunity to make their voice heard. As an original co-sponsor of the bill, I’m proud of the House for voting to restore crucial voting protections, and I’m hopeful the Senate will do the same.

The last item—but certainly not the least—that I would like to write to you about deals with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the nation’s most effective anti-hunger program. As you may have already heard, the administration finalized a rule this week that threatens to take food off the table of nearly 700,000 of America’s most vulnerable citizens as the holidays approach. The decision to target poor and working-class Americans by implementing more burdensome and costly requirements to qualify for food stamps is a sad statement of this administration’s priorities and antithetical to the American values we hold so dearly. However, the Congressional Black Caucus, House Democrats, and I are committed to fighting this decision. Today, the Protect SNAP Act, which I co-sponsored, was introduced to prevent the administration from changing regulations dealing with SNAP. I will be sure to keep you updated on this legislation moving forward.

As another work week comes to a close, it has been another busy one for the United States House of Representatives. While the press is concentrated on the monumentally serious impeachment inquiry, I want to reassure you that the House has been hard at work passing legislation that will undoubtedly benefit the American people. We are currently up to 400 bills passed on the year, 275 of which were passed with bipartisan support. We will continue to legislate on issues that will improve the lives of Americans across the country, while pressing the United States Senate to begin doing the same.

Best,

Emanuel Cleaver, II
Member of Congress

  1. SNAP needs reform. Maybe not drastic cuts but there has always been a great deal of abuse in this program.

  2. The cleave is just mad that his church people and the fat fake revs people won’t be giving as much money at church. Most of these people are getting over $1200 a month in food stamps for baby momma and two kids, why the fuck do they need $1200 a month for three people, they don’t, most of that money is Escalade money.

  3. They aren't taking away from single moms or the disabled. It's only able-bodied people between 18 and 49 with no dependents minors. I think this is reasonable. Of course the Cleave didn't mention this. He doesn't mention a lot of things.

  4. 6:41am is right.
The requirement is for able-bodied people with no children and they have to work all of 20 hours a week.
The unemployment rate just hit 3.5%, an all-time low.
Cleaver's stuck in the 1950's and hasn't had a single decent idea since.
Next he'll be complaining about the "free" KCMO bus service. The least the taxpayers could do is to pay people to ride the bus.
    What an embarrassing clown!

  6. Free section 8, free health care, free collitch (college), free bus. Do they pay for anything?

  7. And yet he looks the other way while Gail Beatty and Frank White get away with reaming the public with up to 1800% property tax increases.

  8. Impeach Cleaver!

  9. His daughter still got that cozy gig with Port KC. KCMO's premier taxpayer fleecing operation?

  10. Carwash is a grifter turd that KC needs to flush. His one goal is to stir the pot and race-bait. Beyond that he is worthless as tits on a snake.

  11. Taxpayers scolded Cleaver over his car wash loan and it did not do any good.

This is part of der Fuhrer's ongoing war on people of color.

Mostly, it will hurt single mothers (most of whom are white), but then he hates women, too.

  14. Byron you dumb bunny, the rule does not apply to single mothers. Not that it shouldn't, but it doesn't. It will affect single able bodied men and women in their prime who will not make the effort to work or train for work for 20 hours a week. Are you saying most of those are people of color? If so you must be a racist.
