Thanks to our blog community, last night we talked about McClatchy's troubles.
Today, public radio "journalists" transcribed national news and offer us this:
KCUR: The Kansas City Star Will Eliminate Its Saturday Print Edition Next Year
Credit where it's due, it's the free version of this NYT story from earlier in the day:
McClatchy Says So Long to Saturday (Print) Newspapers
The only real question:
Will the pricey subscription cost get prorated?!?!
Even better . . .
TKC PRETTY MUCH PREDICTED NEWSPAPER DAILY EDITION CUTBACKS 10 YEARS AGO AND NOW IT'S NEWS FACT!!!
Apropos for #TBT, don't hate TKC for being a visionary.
Developing . . .
Good riddance.
ReplyDeleteThe star still publishes a Saturday paper? That's impressive in and of itself. They should be commended for trying to inform the community and keep up every day. No reason to hate the newspaper, they serve a vital function in our democracy.
Delete^^^^ Please applaud them all the way to bankruptcy court.
DeleteBOOM.
ReplyDeleteThey don't really sell the Saturday edition. Mostly goes just to subscribers. I haven't seen one in a bin or at a store in about three years.
ReplyDeletesad.
ReplyDeleteNow, they should beef up the Sunday edition and try to make it a “must-read.”
ReplyDeleteI honest to god thought they got rid of saturday a long time ago. They should just do one big sunday paper. I mean, honestly they should just eliminate it all together. The sports department is really the only one affected and that's the only section the 10 subscribers they have left read anyway
ReplyDelete^^^^ that's not a horrible idea but to do that, they might actually have to produce content that people want to read. Not just the same old rants against Conservatives.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeletewhoa! the K C Star is still in business!?? Who knew?
The real question is why does anyone still subscribe to the print edition?
ReplyDeleteAnd the Star still has empty INK newspaper racks all over town even though they stopped publishing that last year. You'd think they'd pick up the green INK racks?
ReplyDeleteI can’t imagine why anyone would look at the (fallen) Star in print or online. The National Enquirer’s content is more newsworthy and more objective.
ReplyDeleteA community needs it's newspaper. Cannot survive without it. I look forward to The Star becoming a non-profit! I will happily donate to their cause and I know more will do the same. - Garnish.
ReplyDeleteTKC should hire Helling. He's the only one worth saving at The Star.
ReplyDelete^^^^Thanks for sharing, Dave.
ReplyDeleteA city without a newspaper can't really be called a city. It's just another town.
ReplyDeleteKC should be scared that our newspaper is going under.
Too bad you idiots are to dumb to realize that!
^^^^
ReplyDeleteJust saying the town has a newspaper really doesn't count for much.
Local government can be held accountable by an actual newspaper, but the Star hasn't even tried to do that for many years.
The "reporters" desperately want to stay on good terms with the clowns at 12th and Oak and the JaCo courthouse, so their "stories" are little more than reprinting press releases and rah rah from the usual suspects.
A really good look at what actually goes on in obscure agencies like the "Port Authority" or some of the other "eco devo" giveaway gangs might be valuable.
And ho about an audit of 18th and Vine or the Prospect Avenue sales tax money.
The Star's "features" on Sundays are mostly fluff and human interest bores.
With such a reduced staff, way too many recent J-school grads who have no background in the area, and now what will end up being just the start of reduced days of publication, the Star continues to slip beneath the waves.
Printing irrelevance.
If they didn't print that bundle of trash I get in my Wednesday/Thursday mail, they would fold immediately. I keep just enough to place on garage floor when changing motorcycle and riding mower oil. Also, when frying a whole pound of bacon, some paper towels on top of Star ads soaks up grease.
ReplyDeleteHey that's a great idea! How you going to cook Sunday morning bacon without the vital to the city saturday edition.....LOL?
DeleteI may have a solution to this problem. On the Missouri side THE Independence Examiner, can Step up and Deliver in Jackson County .with a few more reporters And Independent reporting. And A newspaper steps up on the Kansas Side .With a strong Internet presence and a good hard copy.

ReplyDeleteYEA The red Star is going down! That is so awesome!
Nobody "reads" complete sentences any more. This is so last century, don't you know. And we need pictures to help us understand things. Too many words, as our great and wonderful President always sez.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the KC Star??
ReplyDeleteMany KC Star bins seem to not be getting loaded with newspapers. What's up with that? Maybe they can't afford to pay people to load the machines.
ReplyDeleteTV Newscast have taken over investigation.
ReplyDeleteTruly ad-supported.
Newspapers have nothing to really offer other than a great page of comics and puzzles for elders.
They have attacked Conservatives & Catholics and a lot of liberals get their news now from AOC & Pelosi & Jimmy C.
Are we to feel sorry for them after they bit off the hand that fed them?
It’s survival of the fittest.
Their leadership and political leanings got them here.
They didn’t prep for 2020 as they did not have a change to a viable business model while printing hate editorials aimed at Conservatives and Catholics.
And now they want to alienate Chiefs and Sports’ fans advocating for elimination “the Chop”
Are these the next initiatives:
1. Ban Conservatives from Congress
1. Enforce Green New Deal immediately
1. Ban businesses over 10 people (no worries- the star will soon operate at 9)
1. Enforce 75% tax rate on everyone and anything- to support green new deal.
This should help the star survive. They will demand support from TIFs. And they can charge in 2030 $1million from all 100 of their subscribers that should be left and are 100+ years old who will gladly pay to read the comics.
It’s a bad paper completely out of touch with the community. Every city needs a good daily newspaper, unfortunately the Star hasn’t been one for years.
ReplyDeletemcclatchy? future?
ReplyDeleteIt's unfortunate that your hatred of the Kansas City Star is so intense that you can't look at the big picture. Every time there is a cut in service, people lose their jobs. Families suffer. Also with fewer reporters elected officials, the "captains of industry," and others who can impact people's lives are only too aware there are fewer eyes on them. Anytime corporations
ReplyDeletemake poor business decisions such as McClatchy, it's the "little guys" who suffer not the CEO's. Several years back, I told you on the parking lot of KMBZ, that you knowingly hurt people, and with your obvious talent as a writer, your skills could be put to much better use . You agreed, but nothing has changed. A man will never lift himself up, by pushing others down. Unfortunate that doesn't resonate.
