TKC SUNDAY SPECIAL!!! KANSAS CITY VOTE ON MLK BLVD VS. SAVE THE PASEO TESTS ELECTION INFLUENCE STRENGTH OF URBAN CORE BLACK FAITH LEADERS!!!

A quick message this weekend puts an upcoming election in perspective and considers the BIG PICTURE amid the march of history.

Here's the word . . .

"TKC, as you know, faith leaders like MLK championed the American Civil Rights movement and turned Black churches into a political powerhouse which offered a guiding light to communities who had been illegally denied their rights and voting power.

But that was more than 50 years ago.

Now, we see that so much of the urban core in the 3rd District has moved to suburbs like Grandview, Lee's Summit and Raytown and there are other institutions and voices that provide African-American leadership beyond urban faith communities.

Once and for all and moving forward . . . The big question that this vote will answer isn't the moral implications of street signs. Instead, this will be a very real gauge of KCMO urban core influence and VOTING POWER of the African-American clergy.

TURNOUT WINS THIS HISTORICALLY LOW-INTEREST ELECTION.

If the ministers can inspire their congregants to go to the polls and convince white voters to keep the MLK name . . . They have proven their continued relevance.

However, and despite any excuses, if the Save The Paseo supporters win the day. It will be a direct affront to the political system that initially powered the unity and strength of the Black vote in Kansas City, Missouri. If that happens, in the future we might see fewer politicos reaching out to the ministers and looking for alternative ways to engage with the Black community."

  1. They have something that save the paseo doens't. They know where the votes are. They have transportation and connections with voters that have moved voters to the polls for 50 years.

If you were a betting man, go with the MLK Blvd votes. It's the safe bet.

    1. That's probably because most KCMO elections are rigged.

  2. Save the Paseo! I'm not sure that the ministers actually consulted their congregations before trying to destroy something people value.

This name change was a joke. MLK never did anything for KC other than to cause or used as an excuse some of the worse rioting the city has ever seen. The people of KC had nothing to do with MLK being shot but the blacks of KC took to the streets to destroy and burn whatever they could. It's the family members of those who rioted in KC that want to see this name change. Based on the rioting that took place the renaming should have been denied. Show some respect and you'll get respect back.

  5. Can the clergy recommend some good breakfast slop? Getting ready for the Chiefs.

  6. Why not rename it sLIE James Boulevard?

  7. ^^^^^ OUCH!

  8. The voters, black or otherwise, haven't a clue. The road is the dividing line between black and white and renaming the road MLK simply reinforced the dividing line.

  9. If for no other reason than to send a clear rebuke of these so called Reverends, vote to save the Paseo. Real ministers wouldn't use their bully pulpit to shame folks into voting one way or another!

  10. Two things happened here that has everybody against the change, they nevar asked ALL the people on the Paseo, they only asked about 8% of them and it was illegal the way they did it, alysia canady voted no for these exact reasons.

  11. I predict 60-40 on the Yes side.... possibly more lopsided than that. An arrogant Council must be shown its comeuppance.

  12. The revs would probably do better if if was possible to buy votes.
    Oh, wait!
    Really?
Not too tough to predict this election!

  13. TOP PHOTO -- I PITY THE FOOL

I pity the fool who believes this fabricated street name change controversy has anything to do with honoring MLK, Jr.

Rather, it's solely about a small group of clergy attempting to exert power upon the City Council and demonstrate to their congregation that they're still relevant.

"Opportunity Cost" refers to the importance of spending your time wisely, focusing on the issues that matter most. Every hour and every dollar expended on this Paseo/MLK boondoggle is time and money NOT spent on KCMO's violence epidemic, safe and clean neighborhoods, affordable housing, efficient transportation, etc.

Mayor (then Councilmember) Quinton Lucas was wrong.
    Jermaine Reed was wrong.
    Kathryn Shields was wrong.
    Lee Barnes, Jr. was wrong.
    Jolie Justus was wrong.
    Teresa Loar was wrong.
    Scott Taylor was wrong.
    Kevin McManus was wrong.
KC Star editorial board was wrong!!!

  14. Too bad this vote wasn’t just the folks who live on the Paseo because if it was this thing would be shot down easily.

  15. "The road is the dividing line between black and white"

How long have you lived in KC, 10:09?

  16. As a black professional in the 3rd district, I am voting to change the name back to Paseo. The clergy who are pushing the MLK name change does not speak for me or anyone else in the 3rd district. Go back to your pulpits and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, and stay out of civil and political affairs. If the process had been done right in the first place there would not be a need for a vote now. We don't need them out there promoting MLK, King has been more than honored in our community and all down thru the years.

  17. It will still be called the Paseo to some, kind of like the Three Trails Crossing exchange, still called Grandview Triangle all the time.

  18. To keep the MLK name on the Paseo is a slap in the face to both white and black people this was done under the table dirty with YOUR tax dollars and will continue to pay the King family annually with YOUR tax dollars and they won't tell you how much you are paying each year. YOUR TAX DOLLARS WILL GO TO ATLANTA GA. Promises broken by the people who passed this that YOUR tax dollars will stay and work in KC!
Black ministers who are for this and pushing this should be ashamed of themselves this is STEALING from the tax payer. Stop making this a racial issue!!!!! It's Thievery!

  19. This is a vote to chastise our arrogant City Council and Mayor! They think their feces doesn’t stink and therefore can do whatever they think is best for YOU! Vote to save the Paseo and sent the message to this Council to play fair! We elected YOU and we can Un elect you!

  20. We should name something after Jabez Smith, who owned more slaves than anyone else in Jackson County.

  21. My father marched in Selma with Dr. King and highly respected him. However, because of the manner in which this unlawful action took place and the perps behind it, I will be voting to change the name back to The Paseo. No Black anything speaks for me, makes decisions on my behalf, especially not some two-bit hustling degenerate, Black preacher. It’s not 1959 anymore, and these so-called faith leaders had no business whatsoever making demands on council members to change the name without the buy-in of the community at-large, especially considering that nearly every Black person who is murdered on Kansas City streets is almost always killed within blocks, if not yards of a Black church.

  22. ^^^^your father did no such thing, you are lying about the black churches, and you are certainly not black.
