TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY SUNDAY CHURCH CONFRONTATION!!! SUPPORTERS OF 'SAVE THE PASEO' STORM FAITH COMMUNITY MLK BLVD EVENT!!!

Tonight tensions escalate amid a confrontation at a predominately African-American Kansas City church regarding the name of a historic local street.

Checkit:

ALLEGATION: KANSAS CITY 'SAVE THE PASEO' SUPPORTERS RUDELY STORMED INTO A BLACK CHURCH & AND INTERRUPTED AN MLK BLVD RALLY!!!

There's a social media firestorm underway right now but we're focusing on quotes and FIRST PERSON REPORTING FROM THE EVENT from local public figures and people who have held elected office.

First word comes from Former 3rd District Councilwoman and tireless activist Sharon Sanders Brooks:

"I don't believe the total disrespect that the Save The Paseo people have exhibited today. They have stormed into Paseo Baptist Church during OUR Rally. The are refusing to sit down and are standing in the aisle even after the Pastor asked them to be seated."

In a public post, Northeast resident, advocate and school board member Manny Abarca confirms the disturbance with pix:

"This is what lack of integrity looks like, @Save the Paseo....interrupting a peaceful assembly and thinking it’s righteous... I am proud and honored to Stand for Dr. King."

And so . . .

SOME 'SAVE THE PASEO' ACTIVISTS HAVE CROSSED THE LINE AND TARGETED A FAITH COMMUNITY WITH A POORLY PLANNED DISTURBANCE!!!

To be fair, check the Save The Paseo FB and see their take on the dust-up . . . All that we can make of it is that they were completely outnumbered and displayed their naivete by even showing up to a rally for the other side. They would have done better to hold their own event.

Moreover, these protesters seemingly forgot the shameful history of persecution that African-American churches have endured during the American Civil Rights struggle.

AND they're tone deaf to recent threats confronting progressive faith communities amid the divisive tenures of Prez Obama/Trump.

Let's be real . . . This kind of stupidity from a small collection of "Save The Paseo" supporters will galvanize voters and threatens to recharge MLK Blvd support for the Tuesday vote.

Developing . . .

It was always going to come down to this. They had to oppose the churches to get votes. This was the DUMBEST way to do it.

This loses the vote for Save The Paseo.

Sad.

^^^ Somewhat agree.

But this is Kansas City, man. A lot of people will vote FOR save the paseo because of this.

This has turned into a racial war and it is disgusting the black people are using the church building for racist BS. You people that pushed this MLK name change through are dirty filthy pigs and there is NO CHRISTIANITY in you what so ever. You are dredging up something that you never had a problem with before and now all of the sudden you want the name change 51 years later????? That's crap! this was a dirty deal and is wasting tax payers money to pay the King family every year. Sending our tax dollars to GA without a vote. That was dirty, and you liars that call yourself Christians are full of crap. You don't know the first thing about Christianity and you go against everything the Bible says.
Stop using the race card it's no good anymore!!!!!

VOTE TO CHANGE THE PASEO BACK TO PASEO!!!!!! Don't let these pseudo Christian thugs bully you!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Why did they show up there at all.

I saw that video and EVERYBODY looks dumb.

And Save the paseo was clearly outnumbered.

Anonymous said...

How much are we paying the MLK family? THAT is the real question!

Anonymous said...

8:23 are you stupid or something?

Anonymous said...

This debate is making KC dumber.

We've talked about this for two years and still fighting over it. What a DISGRACE!

Anonymous said...

Speaking of "This is what lack of integrity looks like" maybe Manny can explain his connections to the assessment department and how to get special deals like his.

Anonymous said...

^^^^ NOW THAT is a damn good question!

Guessing manny wasn’t counting on someone videoing the event, this looks real bad for him and the mlk crowd.

It will decrease property values, but who cares, right?

Interesting, when people "storm" the Faith community it's wrong, but, activists for one cause or another do much worse and the MSM doesn't call them out...

Anonymous said...

Is there a definitive annual cost paid to the King family for use of MLK name Yes? or No?. If so, how much? Seems to be easier to get government secrets than an answer to this question!

Anonymous said...

Who fucking cares? It will always be the Paseo. WE have been promised that we won't pay the family. Right? They wouldn't lie, would they?

Anonymous said...

I have been doing a search about cost and have found no articles concerning paying the King family yay or nay. If someone has a source or link, please provide. Than You.

These Church Rallys give the impression that they are religiously sanctioned. Especially when voiced by church heirarchy. These blurred lines appear to idolize a man in the Lord's house. Religious and legal violations in question? Taintded? Looking for a word or description here other than pass.

The pic Manny provided was the back of another hispanic man’s head. He’s just mad that he's not that tall.

Better to settle this at the voting booth and not the pulpit or the churches. Just one day left until the vote I think that this was probably the height of tension and a ill-advised stunts but won't really impact the vote one way or another. We need to get this issue settled and move on to more important subjects. One way or another Tuesday should end the discussion.

^^ Really ?:33.. is that like churches changing their doctrines so that they can lure flock ? Seems you see a lot of rainbow flags at churches, maybe only a political party endorsement flag, NRA Flags or whites only Flags would be offensive flags ? You must keep and follow trends of Churches to get wealth, flocks and go completely against their Bible to keep PC. Churches have become a majority of political sides lately. Take off your blinders.

The Black church is the largest promoter of White supremacy next to the KKK. Real Black leaders don’t come from the Black church. So much hate it taught in these churches and there is almost always disagreement on any one narrative. This article is all over the place... the doors of the church are always open, whether you agree or disagree. It has to be this way given that these churches operate tax free.

Anonymous said...

No matter what, I am voting to change the name back. This just a distraction.

These "activists" accusing other people of being "rude" and "storming" into a meeting is a real howler of a joke.
Ever attended a KCPS "town hall meeting"?
Or seen the KC Star editorial board intimidated by the revs and other usual suspects?
How about the regular shakedowns at KCMO city hall?
Give me a break!

I do not believe Dr. Martin Luther King should be honored with a street name. Dr. King set Black people back thousands of year in the equality fight, white-washing the struggle. I am more inclined to champion a street named after Malcom X or Marcus Garvey because their fight wasn’t focused on integration, it was focus on self-preservation. Dr. King’s philosophy is misguided, has broken up families and destroyed the opportunity for Black people to be free thinkers. He also dated White women. That aside...

I support the name change back to The Paseo because the fundamental underlying process by which this name change was accomplished flies in the face of all things civil rights - and promotes the democratic agenda - that all Black people are some how represented by Black faith leaders - that they can proceed carte blanche in the name of Blackness - and decide on issues of a very diverse group of people who happen to have dark pigment and use that carte blanch authority to shout racism when the defenders of an action are predominantly White, while simultaneous promoting White supremacy with said carte blanch authority. It’s rooted in racism - the notion that a single Black group or person controls the narrative of what is an isn’t of Black importance. There is a wide varying degree of Blackness and no one thing or perspective identifies or defines it. I absolutely despise what these preachers are doing and have done - using the name of Dr. King to accomplish it. He is rolling over in his grave.

Protestant churches cannot be desecrated. They are not real churches.
The one true church is the Roman Catholic Church.
Anything else is a fraud.

I vote in every election. I probably won't be in this one. My voting site is hostile to white people and this issue has been turned into a racial one. We already have a park and an elementary school named for King. I have yet to hear how much we residents pay the King family for those. I was on the fence about voting tomorrow, but Save The Paseo's actions last night were inflammatory and kicked the tension up a notch. Thanks to fake Reverends I have been bullied out of voting.

Anonymous said...

Don’t be a wus, video your encounter at the poles and give it to the media if it’s that bad, where’s this polling place at? I’ll call for you, hell I’ll go with you, those people can’t be allowed to bully anybody.

The save the Paseo people didn’t do anything wrong, you apparently didn’t watch the video did you?

Anonymous said...

In 1975 the SCLC tried to change prospect to mlk and it was shot down because the blacks didn’t want their history lost..... they were all black living on prospect and they said no and that was that.

But now that there are white and black people live on the Paseo it’s a race thing, sounds like intimidation from certain black leaders trying to play the race card against the whites. If you can’t convince your own people mix some white people in there and play the race card to get your way. This is bad, and the mayor and city clowncil are in on this too.

Anonymous said...

7:36, I'm not going to tell you where my polling place is because even if I felt safe this time the next time they will remember me. Kind of like the mom who talks to the principal about their kid getting bullied. You make it 10 times worse.

When you blatantly disregard the City Charter and rile up the voters, there are consequences.

Not seeing a lot of storming. In fact, the protesters look like they are quiet and respectful throughout the rally. Is there any proof of these explosive allegations?

Manny Abracadabra's cred went completely down the toilet last night.

He's just a freaking joke at this stage.

I prefer "The Paseo" It's unique in that it begins with an article. I also like "November 6th" street in Memphis.

Why not rename Jessie Clyde Nichols Parkway "The Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Parkway". It would kill two birds with one stone and it would be fun to write it out all the time when trying to address an envelope.

Phil Cardarella said...

OK, just as the 150+ MLK name supporters were getting their rally started, a prominent "anti" showed up and sat quietly, followed within minutes by @ 30 "Save Paseo" supporters in t-shirts and stickers displaying their position, who marched in and stood blocking the center aisles, refusing to sit and keeping those who were sitting from seeing the speakers. (A few did stand in the rear -- one being an organizer grinning with satisfaction at the disruption that occurred.)

Many of those who had been attending - especially those with small children -- got up and left, some fearful of a physical disruption, others because their children simply could not see over the standing disrupters.

Congressman Cleaver spoke -- reminding them that this was a church, and they should have the decency to sit and not block the aisle or view of others. None did. Obviously this was a planned interruption.

Mayor Lucas spoke, endorsing the MLK naming that he had voted for as a Councilmember.

Councilwoman Katheryn Shields spoke as well -- making the point that if KC could have several boulevards named after slaveowners, it should be proud to have one named after MLK.

Phil Cardarella said...

FYI: NO MONEY IS PAID TO THE MLK FAMILY FOR THE USE OF HIS NAME. NONE. PERIOD.

That is one of the favorite LIES being told in this campaign.

Manny is out there claiming The Paseo is "stolen culture" because it doesn't carry the full name Paseo de la Reforma. What a sleazy guy. I look forward to the day he comes crawling around my doorstep begging for my vote.

Let's get this resolved so the black ministers can go back to resolving the little crime issue in the black community, of course with Manny's help and insight.

Streets and those named after King for roughly 20 years, have shown that based on analysis of the available data, King streets tend to have high levels of poverty, inequality and racial segregation when compared to other streets in the area.

Chris Rock said;
"Martin Luther King stood for nonviolence," Rock said on stage, "Now what's Martin Luther King? A street."
"If you're on Martin Luther King Boulevard, there is some violence going down," he said.

To me Kansas City wanting to name a street after MLK is nothing but a fucking joke. King hated violence but in Kansas City it's blacks killing one another all over the place. If King were alive I'm willing to bet he'd be saying,"Don't you dare name a street after me in a city where black on black killing is rampant. I do not want to be associated with people of my race who blatantly go to the streets to kill one another and innocent children."

Manny is a superficial political suck up, working to build his career by supporting black ministers, like his boss! No credibility, just got air.

I like the way the people who want unity constantly remind us of the separation. Most of us do not give a rats ass what color you are as long as you behave.
