RESOLVED: SAVE THE PASEO ACTIVISTS TARNISHED VICTORY WITH PROTEST INSIDE OF KANSAS CITY CHURCH!!!

For a brief shining moment, the "Save The Paseo" movement was a shining example of Kansas City grassroots voter activism.

Volunteers valiantly opposed KCMO political power players and mainstream opinion.

The group assembled a diverse coalition in order to create a consensuses across demographic lines.

Their victory achieved a stunning endorsement of the citizen initiative process and the power of voters against corrupt, insider deals at City Hall.

However . . .

SAVE THE PASEO ACTIVISTS DISGRACED THEMSELVES AND THEIR CAUSE WHEN THEY PROTESTED INSIDE THE CHURCH OF THE OPPOSITION!!!

There is no reasonable argument from any legitimate source defending this action.

Northeast News helped Save The Paseo immensely and even their recent op/ed attempts to quickly ignore and obfuscate the offensive action and refocus on the otherwise notable achievement.

"While the Save The Paseo group’s choice to stand in the aisles may not have been the best choice, peacefully demonstrating at a rally is a time-honored form of protest for social justice and public policy issues."

WRONG!!! THE BLACK COMMUNITY SANCTUARY DESERVES RESPECT AND MILITANT SAVE THE PASEO ORGANIZERS PLACED THEIR PETTY POLITICS OVER COMMON DECENCY AND RELIGIOUS LIBERTY!!!

It's a testament to the ongoing decline of Western Civilization and the current climate of American hyper-partisan divisiveness that we must remind people to remain respectful of other faiths even amid fervent political disagreement.

Put simply and for future reference that is far more important than this ongoing street fight grudge match . . .

EVEN IF THE SANCTUARY SHARES DISAGREEABLE IDEAS: POLITICAL ACTIVISTS SHOULD STAY OUT OF CHURCH IF THEY CAN'T BEHAVE RESPECTFULLY!!!

During this tumultuous year churches, mosques and synagogues have been targeted across the globe by terrorists. The current climate of fear should evoke more respect from Kansas City voters on a topic where the real world street sign stakes are so low.

Sadly, we've seen that the "winning" side has given in to the same chest-thumping and obstinate tactics of the power players they claim to oppose.

As always, the new boss is just as bad as the old boss in the world of politics.

Congressman Cleaver's bold sour grapes "Save The Paseo" Klan comparison evoked ire across Kansas City that was always accompanied by touting the righteous election aims of the Save The Paseo group whilst ignoring their DISGUSTING SACRILEGE IN A HOUSE OF WORSHIP.

Regardless of politics or demographic lines, we pray that blasphemous Save The Paseo activists who desecrated the urban core church will atone for their sins and seek reconciliation.

Meanwhile, the noble aims of petitioners and their commendable work to encourage good government has been corrupted by their shameful tactics and stubborn defense of an attack on the sacred 1st Amendment freedom of religion.

  4. Miss me with this religious, ridiculous bullshit. The narrative cannot be controlled by sore losers. The protestors were not demonstrating but rather quiet spectators and Cleaver’s attempt to embellish the facts is also a failure; just like his attempt to change the name of The Paseo to Marking King Blvd. I’m sorry, there is no evidence that Save the Paseo did anything disrespectfully. Maybe the audio was bad in the church - who knows - but don’t paint the picture that this was an aggressive protest. Feeling threatened by the presence of somebody is something altogether different than pretestors storming the church in an angrily fashion. Grow the fuck up! Cleaver is 74+ years old. Grow the fuck up!

  7. Cleaver is on MSNBC calling people who support the removal, racist and that is a foolish conclusion. Cleaver is having a hard time accepting voter disapproval and let his position as Congressman go to his head. Its those same racist voters that caused him to be seated as Congressman, elected the first City Council in 2019 as the most diverse this City has ever seen in its history. We also have a Black Sheriff, Black County Exec... all voted into office by the same people he is now calling racist.

Get over it. You lost. The Black church isnt some sacred institution, its a glorified whore house where the average clergy person obtained ordination via online payment. The Black church is in decline and they offer nothing in the way of saving souls that desperately need saving. I disagree that the protestors were disruptive...even if they were it wasnt racism that motivated but being fed up with being intimidated and shaken down by Black Revs. I wish I had been there to participate... I dont mind being disruptive for a good cause.

These MLK supporters act as if the Save Paseo folks disrupted church service... they didnt. A political rally was being held at the church, which is a no-no under 401c3 rules. That aside, political rally attracted political discourse and no matter the type of structure, its fair game. Maybe the argument is that the political rally should not have been held at a church.

FACT: Both sides of this issue agree that a political rally (not a church service) was being held at the church.

The question before the public is whether a political rally should have taken place at the church?

Should political rally’s be held in places of worship? Was the church the right venue for a political rally considering the church’s tax free, exempt status? If the venue was proper, this so-called protest inside of a Black church debate would be nullified. Who was actually wrong here?

  26. Damn, how long are "you people" going to bitch about this? Let's face it, the Reverends are influential in doling out political marching orders to the black community. That is wrong! It all too often occurs in their Churches. That is wrong.

When an open to the public political rally is held in a church, the building no longer is functioning as a church. If it is, then they should lose their tax exempt status. Which the f..k is it?

  29. I am very much about doing the research, sifting out the facts and finding a resolution. Emotional crap aside. The Black community has done things indecent and out of order for far too long - and it effects everything from our health to our wealth. In this particular situation, health and wealth are not even the topic. Black liberals get so bogged down in misguided resentment that the two most important issues get lost. Black preachers should not be using their non-profit centers for things like political rallies, especially given the historic body count that exists predominantly on the Eastside. Black preachers do not represent the the thoughts, ideals, needs, wants, desire of the Eastside. And this discourse about it shows that this is less about naming a street after King and more about who’s dick is longer; that is who has the power to do anything they want... nobody has that power, not even Christ himself. And we signs all over the world about how religion is the source of petty in-fighting. This debate should be over but not because the conclusion is that The Paseo violated the church by joining in the political rally held at the church. The logic fails on all counts.

MLK Supporters lost. We all lose at something. Let it go!

  36. "Politican activists should stay out of the church, if they can't behave respectfully."

I'd normally agree with this, but when the Revs in question are also political activists, that type of sacrosanct status goes out the window.

So . . . I'm assuming all these black churches are voluntarily giving up their tax-exempt status in order to more freely integrate politics into their sermons?

  37. Clever is the best advertisement for the Republican Party. The guy just compared many Democrats who voted for the Paseo renaming to KKK members.
Clever and his cronies, Reed(MBA), James and the other Council enablers have created this situation and have made KC the subject or National attention.
Now, I assume the council will punish KC by making the airport the MLK airport.

    ReplyDelete
  38. If a church is a place of worship then they should not hold political a rally in that sacred place. If they bring in one side of a political event into the church that denies the Reverends the right to call it a church, it is a meeting hall. As a meeting hall it is not exempt from taxation so lets get Gayle Beatty on top of this and make an assessment the full value of that meeting place for the tax that they owe for the past year.
If you want your church to be a church keep politics out of it.

  39. Ari Stocrat... Resident of earth11/13/19, 9:05 AM

This is nothing more than following the Democrat liberal Doctrine set 4th in the Years 1996 2008 in which, black members of urban churches came out to the suburbs and set in houses of worship. Then they reported back to the urban reverends about any spoken political word that came from the pulpit. Does anybody remember the Main Street coalition standing up to get evil political speech out of churches! People need to remember from both sides of the aisle whatever you put into play can be used against you

  40. The protester were right. It was a political meeting open to the public. They did nothing wrong, they stood silently, were not disruptive. If the ppl holding the meeting are so fragile that they could not handle a peaceful silent protest then fuck them and their hurt feelings. If you think otherwise you are a brainwashed idiot - this reminds me of the covington kids standing silently while smiling but was vilified in the (((MSM))) and left for doing nothing but existing - that's what hit me like a Mack truck - the media is not about reporting the truth it only serves to "report" the narrative and interests of its (((owners))).

Tony, this is one of the best things you've ever written. My first reaction was surprise, but upon reflection, I remembered that you are a devout Catholic so maybe it's not so surprising. I agree that churches, temples, synagogues, etc. should be respected. Because of our bloody, racist history, Black Churches are special, & should be respected as special. Members of the Black Community must feel safe in their special place, because they have been murdered in their churches & had their churches blown up.

To claim that it's inappropriate for Black ministers to be politically active is to ignore the disproportionate influence that Evangelical ministers have over our politics, & national discourse.

Finally, I agree with Bryan, that because it was not an actual church service that was taking place, but a political rally their mere presence was not inappropriate, but once inside they behaved inappropriately. While the entire effort was not racist, it is clear from the comments that some members were motivated by racial hatred.

Bottom line: Will Kansas City remain the only major city without a street named after Dr. King?

  47. WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today reminded section 501(c)(3) organizations, including charities and churches that federal law prohibits them from becoming directly or indirectly involved in campaigns of political candidates.

The prohibition against political campaign activity has been in effect for more than half a century and bars certain tax-exempt organizations from engaging on behalf of or in opposition to political candidates. However, these organizations can engage in advocating for or against issues and, to a limited extent, ballot initiatives or other legislative activities.

“The political contests, especially for president, are starting earlier than usual. The IRS, as it has in the past, wants to remind charities and churches of the ban on political campaign activity. We also want to urge nonprofit and religious organizations to review the guidance we have issued to help them avoid any problems,” said Steven T. Miller, Commissioner of IRS’ Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division.

The IRS’ goal is to educate the leadership of these organizations to help them stay within the legal boundaries. In this regard, IRS Revenue Ruling 2007-41 outlines a number of scenarios to help charities and churches understand the ban on political campaign activity and actions that may arise.

In addition to the revenue ruling, the IRS has other helpful information for churches and charities on its website at /eo. For example, IRS Publication 1828, Tax Guide for Churches and Religious Organizations, contains a discussion of the law affecting political campaign activity by churches and religious institutions.

Violation of the law can result in imposition of an excise tax or, in extreme cases, a loss of tax exempt status.

    **********************************************************

I can think of several times local ministers and churches have broken this ruling.

How about this those of you who think it was a political rally contact the local IRS office and file a complaint. There is a huge amount of what can and what can't be done using a church for lobbying for something. You all know as well as I do Cleaver has campaigned from the pulpit many a time. But we also know Cleaver has never been one to always play by the rules either.

But long story short I don't think the meeting was against the law by being held in the church. Was it the correct place to do so, no in my opinion. Was the Save the Paseo group wrong in what they did? That's really too silly of an issue to get into to. The videos I saw the only people talking loudly maybe screaming were those at the front of the room supporting the cause. I asked a local minister his thoughts and while he asked to remain anonymous he stated he wouldn't have allowed such a meeting to take place in his church that there are many other place that are free for the public to use for those sort of things. He also stated people standing in the aisle would in his view be seen as being disrespectful only if they were yelling and interrupting the speaker. He made it clear come Sunday morning if worshiping by standing in the aisle felt right to you he would by no means ask you to sit down. And far as he knew there is no written law that says you have to sit down in a church. In fact he pointed out we stand and sing to the glory of God many times on a Sunday morning all over the church.

Time to put this issue to bed. The voters have spoken it is now a moot issue and those who see it as a loss need to get a grip on themselves and move on in life. It wasn't a racist issue it was a personal preference issue about an object that's a huge part of the history of Kansas City and as I said the voters have spoken and that's that.

To refresh the minds of the aged, the young, the ignorant and misinformed, recall that the Black Panther Party was active in this country from 1966 to 1982 and promoted far-left ideologies such as Black Nationalism, Maoism, Marxism-Leninism through the use of violence.

In 1968, Eldridge Cleaver (Carwash relative) led an ambush on Oakland California police officers. Congressman Carwash is proud of his relative and continues to evoke his name in public interviews.
