KANSAS CITY WORKER PUSH BACK: UNION PACIFIC 'BIG BOY' PUBLICITY COVERAGE MUST MENTION RECENT LOCAL LAYOFFS!!!

Kansas City still loves train but a recent weekend blitz of hype stopped on reader in his tracks.

A glimpse at the local hype machine as one of the biggest local rail yards has been silenced after a devastating economic cutback:

Historic Union Pacific Big Boy locomotive rolls into Kansas City

And here's the retort . . .

"TKC, REMEMBER THIS . . . Union Pacific was $6 billion in PROFIT last year. A record breaking year for them. They garnered $1.4 billion in PROFIT in their first quarter this year. Yet they cut jobs for HUNDREDS of your fellow Kansas City residents. Why? Because they want to remain "competitive" and cut operating expenses. I know because I'm one of them. It's just sad to see my hometown support and rally at events like the one at Union Station recently with their steam engine.

So, I'm sorry if I'm not cheering for their local train along with the dopes in the crowd. Maybe the real news should connect the local workers out in the cold this year instead of just more toy train coverage???? "

  1. The story was feel good garbage, most of the crowd were UP workers forced to go out and cheer. Doubt there was any REAL interest in this.

KC doesn't care about trains much at all really.

  2. All of the people that went to look at the pretty train had no clue about the UP layoffs.

Agree. They might be props for the company.

  3. @7:07 and yet you're completely wrong and have no idea what you're talking about whatsoever. A huge crowd came to Martin City to watch the train go through...huge. Weird.

  4. People still love trains even though the companies, all of them, have gone to more efficiently scheduling. I have known several workers on trains including wifes family members. It is a tough system with being on call within a tight time window when you are called. I think many of the workers getting new jobs will actually be much happier. Temporary setback.

  6. Freight trains and freight yards are not the kind of Modern Vibrant Image Darth James and Tweety Bird Q are trying to sell.

  7. It may be that folks are going to have to learn that companies have no obligation to retain employees. They should honor financial promises such as pensions, etc. Automation and democrat immigration influx of lower paid workers will continue to eliminate jobs.

  8. Drove from Kansas City, MO to Garnett, KS to see Big Boy #4014. None of the people there I spoke with worked for Union Pacific. They came from Saint Louis, Clinton, Grandview, Gladstone, Liberty, Overland Park KS, Williamsburg, KS etc. All were there to witness this massive engine and take a few photos. Osawattomie was just about shut down due to the large number of people. Cars and trucks were stopped alongside the roadways with people getting as close as they dared to see this train.

Very sorry to have learned about the layoffs at UP, but layoffs happen. Hope the laid off workers can get suitable jobs (good jobs)

    1. We rolled down to osawatomie. It was a sight the kids will remember for a gif while. We were about 30ft from it when it started rolling out. Damned impressive.

  10. @ 1247 - Trump didn't do this to the UP workers, The union and the customers demands for more efficient service did them in.
