FREE BUS RIDES & BIKE LANES: WHAT ARE KANSAS CITY TRANSIT PRIORITIES?!?!

Kansas City is ready to talk transit and that's mostly just a series of restrictions against drivers automobiles.

Here's the legislation that's mostly serves as a low-key backdoor effort to push through the $400-MILLION bike plan . . .

RESOLUTION NO. 190951: Develop recommendations for a transit priority policy that provides guidance for the provision of various types of transit priority treatments on city streets; directing the City Manager to collaborate with the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority and engage relevant City boards and commissions and stakeholder groups in the development of recommendations for a transit priority policy . . .

A list of best practice transit priority treatments and guidance for their use including, without limitation:

- traffic signal priority;
- queue jumps;
- signal synchronization;
- in-lane transit stops;
- dedicated transit lanes;
- pedestrian signal automation;

The first big city effort of it's kind in the U.S. -- This program also includes preliminary budgeting for freebie bus rides as Kansas City learns to love socialism like the rest of the nation.

Accordingly . . .

MAYOR QUINTON LUCAS & THE NEW COUNCIL HATE CARS?!?!? TKC BLOG COMMUNITY NOTICES DRIVERS EXCLUDED FROM THIS DISCUSSION DESPITE THEIR DOMINANCE OF LOCAL ROADS!!!

It seems that representatives of the most prevealent form of transportation should be a part of the discussion as the City Hall discussion seems controlled by BIKE-SUPREMACISTS rather than equitable and inclusive discourse.

Developing . . .

Better title for you T: Socialism is Kansas City transit priority number one!

^^^^ Lame, being more inclusive and providing economic stimulus seems to be the priority here. Sorry but that is something that most should support!

KC already gives free rides to developers, streetcar constructors, and a host of other grifters. Why not free bus rides for those who really need a free ride?

True. Let's all hop aboard the gravy train!

Priorities seem to be to screw up traffic with the addition of fair weather lanes and free hood rat transportation to spread crime to the suburbs.

87% of metro residents don't live in KCMO and the majority of KCMO residents don't live downtown.
thing that makes it more difficult or expensive for people to drive their vehicles downtown will provides disincentives for people to go there.
And there are many hundreds of other opportunities in the metro to work, shop, or be entertained.
Some adults who understand financial arithmetic and business should be involved in this "project".

6:19 check your math. The population of KCMO is half a million. That means more than 20% of the whole metro area lives in KCMO.

6:13: Or we could enable people who earn minimum wage to get to their jobs without having to pay $1.50 each way.

Bikers cut it front of people and then flip them off. Scumbags all.

Wichita spent their money on electric buses which allows a lot of flexibility as opposed to a failed fair weather toy train. KCMO needs to rethink their form of mass transportation.

Our priorities should be no rides from east of Troost to west of Troost.

Free bus - just another way to shift the burden of life upon the middle class white tax payers.

Anonymous said...

How are you going to protect the bus drivers who already put up with a lot of shit? There are videos on youtube of KC busdrivers being "knocked out" and hit with a bat. If you let the dangerous crazies on for free, what about them?

Anonymous said...

9:02: I know I'm on a fool's errand, but the city will lose very little by offering free bus rides when you take into account fares make up 12% of ATA revenue, and collecting and accounting for fares, which will no longer be required, probably costs 12% of revenue.

Besides, if the streetcar is free, why shouldn't buses be as well?

Anonymous said...

All drivers should have a bike rider for a hood ornament.

Second on the safety of bus drivers already. now the bus will literally become a heated rolling homeless shelter

924 - ...tell us how many millions of dollars is 12%? It's about 10 million, so where is that money going to magically come from if not from tax payers?

So yes your are right...only a fool (or KCMO politico) would try to argue that a 10 million loss is a small loss.

Anonymous said...

First they need to figure out what net effect ditching fares would have on the economics of the system. And by figure out, I mean using empirically determined values, not unlikely to come true assumptions like with the streetcar. If it would create a shortfall in operating revenue, they should determine specifically how they will make up the difference. Free bus service is a good idea if (and it's a big IF) the numbers are right.

What Kansas City needs to be doing is repairing all the roads now that are in very sad condition all over rather than spend money on ridiculous special interest projects.
Stop with all the shiny new projects and lets fix what we already have first. Make all bus fares free or start charging to ride the Folly Trolly. But we know the city will never charge for the Folly Trolley because as we all know the rider counts would plummet faster than past Sundays temperatures did.

Kansas City needs a Mayor who will get the city back on its feet and operating as a first class city does. Silly rarely used bikes lanes along a street full of potholes and busted curbs isn't the look of a first class city. Lucas and the special interest groups all screaming these projects provide economic support and jobs only shows how uneducated they are in seeing a city operated correctly. Repairing and fixing what you have is done by some of the largest groups of working class people out there.

Lucas isn't a fixer, he is a pipe dream provider for all the special interest groups who line up with a hand held out looking for a fat check after writing and passing another resolution that really benefits nobody, but makes it look like they are doing something productive.

I propose that a resolution is written banning any further idiotic resolutions being crafted and put into effect.

Going to enjoy watching businesses move out of KC due to ground transportation and shipping restraints. Then going to enjoy watching the cost of garbage disposal go up to do to no way to get around on streets.
SHIP OF FOOLS.

Free buses would be good for the homeless. Now, the streetcar makes them get off at each end & wait until the next streetcar comes. With the buses they would not have to get off. But this his will have a drastic affect on streetcar ridership numbers.

9:41: Thanks for ignoring the labor savings. You must be one of the change counters for the ATA who's facing a future at McDonald's.

@6:38am
If I were a small business person in KCMO and lived in a city where the "urban planners" were more interested in bicycle lanes, streetcars, and density than they were in parking, I'm not sure a couple percent difference in population estimates would be at the top of my list.
The vast majority of metro residents don't live in KCMO, much less downtown, which is where all the focus has been for the last eight years.
Even the residents north of the river have been getting screwed and ignored.
And those potential customers will be driving their own vehicles.
Just talk with some restaurant owners in the Crossroads.
Time will tell if Lucas and the newbies have the guts to make any difference.

Anonymous said...

^^They won't have the guts

Anonymous said...

10:30 - what? you are great with vague numbers and specious arguments....please just come out and tell us what the labor saving will be - we will still have to pay the drivers right....do we pay 10million a year to count the 10 million in rates? Where is the savings?

Common sense tells me the costs, including labor, will go up with the projected increase in ridership - more routes, more buses more drivers, more mechanics, more maintenance.

Let’s ask San feces city California aka San Francisco how the free everything is working out for them, that alone should scare the hell outta people.

Anonymous said...

11:57: Let's see the increase and take it from there.

Unless gas goes sky high I doubt many people who can afford to drive will take the bus, and if they do, there will be less traffic and less wear and tear on the roads.

The city estimates free bus service will cost $8 million of a budget of $105 million, and I don't think that takes into account labor savings available by getting rid of change counters, etc.

Here's an article on it:

https://nextcity.org/daily/entry/kansas-city-considers-doing-away-with-transit-fares-citywide

If it doesn't work, we can go back to charging for the bus, and your old job will probably still be available.

The problem with Libertarians is they still support Brownbacks economic theory based on "The Laffer Curve". Now that Brownback is finished there seems to be some discussion if Libertarians even have a foot in this political race anymore. We realize Libertarianism is still popular in the "bar scene" in the metro but how many from that demographic even made it to the midterm polls this season?

I see the following happening if this idea goes through...

Imagine yourself working for Google in their Maps department in five years and a new guy starts today. He looks at the big wall map and says "Didn't there use to be a place named Kansas City in the middle of the country?" and you answer "Yeah but they gave everything away so all the people moved out"

Anonymous said...

12:57 Typical dumbass approach - let's just wing it and see.

You went from do not worry tax payers it will only be a small loss of 12% of the KCAT budget (12% of the budget is 10million)to OMG you must be a fare counter worried about your job to oppose this giveaway to now let's just do it and wait and see what happens.

Still the most moronic of your arguments is the change counter savings. Are you such a simpleton that you do not realize there are no change counters. The rider deposits his fare in the slot on the bus, which is then emptied into a machine that counts the change - so how is this going to be a significant savings in labor to offset the 8 - 10 million annual loss? Do you really image that there are dozens of highly paid workers sitting around counting nickels and dimes....you do don't you!

Hard to believe Super Dave missed this one. Did not know the banks were threatening to leave Kansas City. Where will the Federal Reserve move to, Sioux Falls?

Nothing is free. You pay for new buses, you have to pay the drivers, you pay for gas (recession is coming with long lines and $5.00 gas again),there are consequences after an impeachment, local damage will be immense, someone has to PAY for all this, lipstick on a pig, heck, it's still a pig, paint the town red, it's got a start with gallons of blood,what are we...150? Merry Xmas, Happy Hanukkah, watch the ever increasing, never repair, hardly fixed potholes, we don't even have money for salt and winter is here, like Scrooge, no the Grinch, money, money, money, we gotta get paid, greed is good, green is good, and this is our world. Just shove it in your nose, in their face like always it's cold...let it snow, they won't go to the polls. They're doing that, again. Having meetings no one can get to on frozen days, we love you we're rising, like a yeast infection. It's a secret...meeting time again. Let's go save the world and have a drink at the bar. Party to the first part. Don't tread on me, we're great again and God bless America. It's a different world,our white collar world,no bread and butter circus. Get in the bike lanes and ride like the wind. No electric buses needed nor required...common sense has left the building. Intimidating, bullying, bribery, lying,leading the way, get her done, and lead the sheeple. Lazy poor people are getting bike lanes and free bus rides and no jobs. Not working, paying in to help recover from all this debt. Pancakes. Even hoes got to eat.

12:57: You're entitled to your opinion. I can see I was right in my first post. It was a fool's errand.

Anonymous said...

The ole' Straw Man debate.

Anonymous said...

1:46, the Laffer Curve is a calculation, not a theory. It shows the level of income tax rates that maximizes income tax revenues. Anyone who thinks that the Laffer Curve argues for always lowering tax rates is misguided. Anyone who thinks that raising tax rates will always bring in more tax revenues is misguided as well.

I'm a quick learner. Deflection. It starts at the top. We've been through this before...for years. Again? Condemned to repeat the same thing. Pop a rim off. Get an alignment. Another tire, no problem. The money has to come from somewhere. Shuffle hustle already? Robbing Peter to pay Paul?. Your straw man is going to w be used to feed the police horses. That's green. Clothes cleaned to Goodwill or made into blankets for the homeless. Bleach only to clean clothes. No opinion allowed,huh? Do what I say, not as I do. I'm just a regular guy. I got things to do.
