TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! INSIDER: BELEAGUERED BROOKSIDE SOCCER CLUB BETRAYED BY KANSAS CITY PARKS & REC!!! CITY HALL MUST STAND UP AGAINST SPORTING KC!!!

Right now our blog community shares FIRST WORD regarding the struggle of a Kansas City urban soccer program to stay up and running whilst City Hall caters to corporate professional sports.

To wit . . .

KANSAS CITY PARKS & REC THREATENS TO BOOT BROOKSIDE YOUTH FROM SWOPE SOCCER PARK AND GIVE SPORTING KC EVEN GREATER CONTROL OVER THE TAXPAYER SUBSIDIZED FACILITY!!!

Check the community testimony and a start of a contentious battle betwixt local pro sports and community activities for youngsters:

TKC READER FIRST WORD: Sporting Destroyed Brookside Soccer Club

In a letter from the new KCMO Parks & Rec honcho's office to Brookside Soccer Club, they are claiming Brookside Soccer did not take the proper steps to renew their lease for use at Swope Soccer Village. They're kicking them out and allowing Sporting KC to run their own recreational league.

Brookside has been around since 1977 and is a not-for-profit club serving the inner city. Meanwhile, Sporting KC is a for-profit KANSAS company pushing out the little guy . . .

If you recall, Swope Soccer Village is a $14 million dollar city-owned facility that was built with KCMO taxpayer money at the behest of Sporting KC holding Brookside Soccer on its shoulders. The idea was that the city could have a first-class facility to allow inner city kids the opportunity to play soccer. The City placed Sporting KC as managers of the park with Brookside Soccer as the anchor tenant with preferred rates on field use fees. I believe Brookside Soccer spends more than $150,000 a year to Sporting KC. Any shortfalls in the budget are covered by the City.

With help from KC Parks & Rec Swope Soccer Village is now nothing more than a moneymaker for Sporting KC.

Since opening in 2014, Sporting KC has bullied Brookside Soccer in every way, from withholding facility support during their recreational league weekends (parking, emptying trash, setting up fields) to raising rates. And now this. Someone has to stand up for Brookside Soccer Club. It's not director Terry Rynard or the Parks & Rec department. Someone has to take it above her and NOT ALLOW a Kansas company to push around the 3,000+ players who call Swope Soccer Village their home.

What are the ramifications of standing up to Sporting KC?

Are they going to pull their team from training at Swope Soccer Village? wait, they already did that when Kansas built them a new facility in Wyandotte County.

Are they going to pull their USL club, the Swope Park Rangers, and take them to Kansas? wait, they already did that.

Are they going to fill Swope Park Soccer Village with mostly elite clubs and keep the less fortunate kids from playing in their neighborhood park? wait, they already do that by increasingly limiting Brookside Soccer's field access.

Again, what are the ramifications of standing up to Sporting KC?

  1. That's what city hall always does, they want to keep big business happy and ignore the taxpayers. KC is notorious for ignoring commitments and letting companies do whatever they want.

    1. ^^^^ Worth mentioning that the club is a hobby for some of the richest people in KC. There's no way city hall rules against them.

Sounds like the same thing they did with the airport. They promised a "community benefit agreement" and lots of money to groups all over the city. Then they found out they couldn't take the money away from the airport.

City Hall has never kept their word. Anybody who lives here knows that's a FACT!

  6. I think it's funny that Sporting thinks their the Chiefs or even Royals. The MLS is largely a pyramid scheme that depends of expansion to bring revenue that just aid there.

If Sporting left tomorrow few in KC would care. And their stadium would be a concert Sandstone venue that would house WYCO HS football/soccer games.

  9. This is a non-issue. Anyone who plays or watches soccer is a fucking homosexual or is from a third-world shithole like Mexico. Why do you think soccer is so popular in England and France, the pussiest countries on the planet?

  10. Brookside bought into the whole sporting club thing so it’s as much their fault as anybodies.

  11. So very much drama over Sporting KC's barely passable minor league soccer!

  12. Raytown has a fine soccer club that inner city kids can use. Its very affordable and well run.

  13. KC needs out of the pro-sports game. Just a waste of time and not anything worthy of spending so much city hall money. KC is more than jock straps.
