Friends & family of an upstart councilman have been touting this controversial measure that Kansas City media haven't noticed yet . . . TKC readers should take a look at the most important aspects of the legislation FIRST:
ORDINANCE #190906:
WHEREAS, many deadly weapons, including firearms, being used to commit crimes were obtained illegally and most of Kansas City’s homicides are caused by deadly weapons; and,
WHEREAS, section 1.320, of the Revised Statutes of Missouri, promotes the prompt reporting of stolen firearms . . .
WHEREAS, stolen or lost explosives raise the concern that they will be improperly or illegally used in a dangerous manner that presents a threat to the public safety; and,
WHEREAS, the reporting of stolen or lost deadly weapons and explosives can help reduce their illegal trafficking and can assist the police in investigations that involve a deadly weapon or explosive; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
Section 1. That Chapter 50, Code of Ordinances of the City of Kansas City, Missouri, is hereby amended by enacting one new section 50-274 relating to failing to report a stolen or lost deadly weapon or explosive, to read as follows:
Sec. 50-274. Failure to report a stolen or lost deadly weapon or explosive.
(a) Failure to report a stolen or lost deadly weapon or explosive. A person commits the unlawful failure to report a stolen or lost deadly weapon or explosive if the person owns a deadly weapon or explosive and knowingly fails to report the theft or loss of such weapon or explosive to the Kansas City Police Department within seventy-two hours of the time such person knew or should have known the weapon or explosive has been stolen or lost.
And so we ask . . .
WILL THIS LATEST LOCAL GUN ORDINANCE HELP KEEP STREETS SAFER OR MAKE LIFE HARDER ON LAW-ABIDING GUN OWNERS?!?
The only thing we know for sure is that KCMO voters haven't been asking for more crackdown against residents who obey the law . . .

Loser druggie brother came to my house while I was on vacation and took it. Even bragged about it. Haven't heard a word from the police about it since I filed the report in 2010. Police just stood there and looked at me as if something was wrong with me! They could care less. Until one of them gets shot with that pistol! That's why I saved all the documentation. You must document theft.

What? Police never even called me back once about my gun, the one my brother stole in 2010. I gave them my brother's name, phone number, address and my attorney's letter telling my brother to not come back to the house and not take any property. Not a single followup call. I am not going to contact the police. If the gun is used to sadly shoot one of them, then I will tell the news channel how Police had the chance to go to my brothers house, take the gun and return it to me - BUT DIDNT. Wouldn't you think Police would act? I am sure my brother told the police I was lying - but the facts are clear and speak for themselves. Police are just not interested and I can see why, its a thankless job and it can be much fun going to peoples dirty houses and searching them. Anyway my insurance company paid me for the loss. I took the money and bought a CZ 9mm, which is a better pistol.

Like they think the thief night have returned the gun to its owner and said "I am sorry I stole your gun, here you can have it back?" That's happened maybe once in the past 30 years. And the thief was probably then shot by the owner. Stolen guns are sold the same day. They are like a gold bar. A hunk of metal you can trade for cash.

So somebody steals a gun. The owner dutifully reports the theft to the police. What then? What will happen that will justify the coerced police report? My guess: nothing will happen. The ordinance is just useless feel-good window dressing.

Police wont do anything even if you give them the name, address, phone number, date of birth, social security number and neighbor's witness accounts identifying the perp. Police will just look at you with big deer eyes as if they don't know what to do and they will think its all made up!
