Kansas City Convention Hotel Debuts Day After April Fools' & Too Late For Big 12 B-ball

Kansas City Taxpayers are funding this project, here's the latest disappointment . . .

The long-awaited Loews Kansas City Convention Center Hotel has set its opening date.

Brian Johnson, the hotel's managing director, told the Kansas City Business Journal that construction is ahead of schedule and continues to go extremely well. So much so, that the $367 million, 800-room hotel will open on April 2.

Although the April 2 opening will be on the early end of the hotel's previously projected spring 2020 opening, it will narrowly miss the Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament, which will be played at the Sprint Center from March 11 to 14.

  1. That's too bad because it's one of the few events I can actually see needing a downtown hotel for. Is this going to hurt high end hotels on the plaza like the intercontinental?

  3. Opening just after April first is not the story.
The upcoming lack of revenue and ongoing need for taxpayer cash will end up being the real April Fools' joke.
How did KCMO get cash-strapped again?
    Arithmetic!

  4. Actually, Kansas City already has an excess of hotel rooms available downtown, according to MARC and every other study made by anyone independent of the Real Estate Developers.

Occupancy rates of already existing rooms are under 55% and show signs of declining even further.
