DISCOVERING ANGER!!! KANSAS CITY DISPUTES COLUMBUS DAY, INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S DAY AND DÍA DE LA RAZA!!!
The lead photo is an old school Kansas City Chiefs logo which should remind us that we live in kinder, gentler and equally disappointing times in spite of the power of social media to connect us with strangers to hate.
Nevertheless . . .
TODAY'S FEDERAL HOLIDAY MOSTLY SERVES TO INSPIRE ANGER GIVEN THAT ANY CELEBRATION WILL LIKELY OFFEND!!!
A quick rundown from "many sides" that hopefully provides an overview of PC drama that local news is too timid to openly discuss . . .
- Trading Columbus Day for Indigenous Peoples' Day: For some, an overdue change
- Día de la Raza is the celebration of the Hispanic heritage of Latin America and brings into it all the ethnic and cultural influences making it distinctive.
- Stop scapegoating Christopher Columbus
- President Trump marks Columbus Day, praises explorer's drive for discovery as 'core of the American spirit'
- Christopher Columbus is a historical figure celebrated as a mythical hero in spite of his genocidal and racist past
- On this Columbus Day, Italian-Americans need your respect and understanding
Meanwhile, most broke-ass locals will celebrate today by going to work whilst the fading American-middle-class confronts another recession and keyboard warriors crusade for political vindication from one side or another of the same coin.
The song for today is "Conquistador" -- A song by the British psychedelic rock band Procol Harum. Written by Gary Brooker and Keith Reid, it originally appeared on the band's 1967 self-titled debut album. It was later released as a single from the band's 1972 live album Procol Harum Live: In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.
You decide . . .
Hey now. Those were the good old days when the Chief did something besides make commericals!
ReplyDelete^^^ Lulz.
DeleteBanking holidays should be obsolete with today's technology.
ReplyDeleteFinally, a discussion where the WASPs have no real standing or right to feel superior about anything. As usual!
ReplyDeleteNO FUN! ^^^
DeleteAlso not true.
ReplyDelete@ 6:33 Don't be an IDIOT. It's people like you who keep things stirred up and cause fighting. Get over it or you are free to leave!
Anyone who hates Columbus Day hates Italian Americans.
ReplyDeleteCan we just call it "No Real Accomplishments Day"?
ReplyDeleteThat should cover Columbus, Italians, Native Americans, and all of Latin America put together.
If not for Columbus the locals would be digging holes to shit in same as 500 years ago.
ReplyDeleteNever understood the whole Christopher Columbus discovering America thing. True he had never laid eyes on it if in fact he really did since some seem to think he didn't really lay eyes upon mainland American. Either way he sure as hell didn't discover it as it had people already cohabitating on the land or area known as North America. Columbus Day is just another one of these sort of twisted things about American history.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the revisionist history campaigns that bugs me the most. It's intellectually dishonest to judge 1400's actions with 2019 standards. Nearly every society was raiding, pillaging, stealing, and killing as far as they could travel. It wasn't a European, Native American, African, or Asian phenomenon. It was nearly universal.
ReplyDeleteThe reality is that we celebrate Columbus's daring adventure - flat earth, months at sea, uncharted waters, unknown people, threat of starvation and risk of attack by potentially hostile people. It's the equivalent of Astronauts going to Mars. What's no to say that the first person to step on Mars might be faced with a similar backlash in 600 years? Who knows what diseases they may introduce, environmental impacts they might have, or any other host of consequences they might cause? Is Buzz Aldren a hero or the devil in 600 years?
Get over your offhandedness - celebrate Columbus day. Celebrate Native Americans too. You don't have to pick a side. Their history is forgotten and celebrating Columbus day isn't meant to take anything away from them.
Let's ramp up the hysteria. Maybe demand it be called Monica Day or something catchy.
ReplyDeleteHow bout Kardashian Day? Perfect fit for the times.
ReplyDelete^^^^^+++ @ 837. I was just thinking the same thing and in my frustration I thought "Just get rid of this holiday!". All of the different group sensitivities that take the establishment of days and ruin them all. Who would miss it? Bankers, stock market employees, government employees, post office employees, that is all. The rest of us do our daily routines anyway. I just don't want this day turned into the next Gay or Black or Hispanic holiday we don't need. The citizens of this country are all Americans why can't we have an American holiday? Because those who object are looking through 2019 eye at something that was thought ot be something back in the 1900's. They need to get over it! And by the way, the Civil War was a real thing but they want to remove it from history too.
ReplyDeleteI’m still waiting for the day we acknowledge that the Mayans wiped out the Olmecs who wiped who was here before them. And let’s not forget the Aztecs who killed everyone. In other words, Columbus was just carrying on a tradition that had been occurring for thousands of years
ReplyDeleteAnd don’t forget that there is evidence that the Chinese landed on the west coast over a thousand years ago
How bout Michael Brooks Day
ReplyDeleteChief Sitting Sharice Day
ReplyDeleteExcellent post, 8:37. Just one thing--the thing about people thinking the earth was flat is a myth. Even the ancient Egyptians knew it was round and figured out its circumference by measuring how far the sun traveled in a day and multiplying that by 24.
ReplyDeleteNo, Columbus does not deserve his own holiday. (Neither does MLK Jr. - why can't he be satisfied with streets.) But Indigenous Peoples Day would be similarly absurd because there are no people who are indigenous to North, Central or South America. The ancestors of everybody who is here or ever was here came here from some other continent.
ReplyDelete^^^^But that's true of every other continent except Africa.
ReplyDeleteSo anyway whats goin' on in Sliester land these days?
ReplyDeleteWe don't know his country of origin. We don't even know how to correctly spell his name. We do know he was a monster.
ReplyDelete@8:37, @9:34 is right, every educated European knew the Earth wasn't flat, the only disagreement was its circumference. Conventional wisdom at the time said about 25,000 miles around, while Columbus argued it was only 17,000 miles, and that meant it was possible for him to reach Asia by sailing west.
ReplyDelete(BTW, the Earth's circumference is 24,907 miles.)
Super Dave @8:34, it's far worse than you imagine.
Look up the Zeno Brothers.
Columbus had a Map!
There is proof of his foreknowledge in his own log books that he wrote himself during his first voyage. When he made landfall on the east coast of Hispaniola (now Santa Dominica), he records that he detached the Pinta, instructing her Captain to sail southward and "circle the Island, meeting him in the Santa Maria and with the Nina at the northmost Cape"!
If he had just discovered this land, how did he know he was on an island, and how did he know it had a "north cape"? He couldn't have asked the locals, according to the same log book, he "didn't meet any "Indians" who SPOKE SPANISH until a month later!!!
No human is 100% pure. We deal in too many absolutes now days...which is why a finger gun is a felony.
ReplyDelete10:03, in general you are right. Homo sapiens are indigenous to Africa and nowhere else. Not counting the small number of genetic markers some populations received from homo neandertalensis and homo denisova, both of which originated in Asia.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we could celebrate a "People who got here sooner than most other people" day.
Hey Chiefs fans,
ReplyDeleteClark here. As my slobbering friend, Mitch Holthus, sez it's "Time to Put the Hammer down!" No worries Independence fans; that doesn't mean put the meth pipe down ! Happy Halloween Chiefs fans, I have another Trick instead of a Treat for you this season.
Best Regards
Clark Hunt (Son of Lamar)
There was a reason the natives were called "savages".
ReplyDeleteHey, what about Vasco da Gama day or Leif Ericsson Day or Magellan?

Move as far away from the City as possible. Builders and Realtors made, there money .And it's going on today. There is a world order, and a deep state that Would Like The People that Voted in an outsider FOR President to go away The Main stream media is part of this. He did not collude with the Russians, maby we can get him on something else. They want the Voter's to turn to a Democrat Canedate .
