  4. It is important to realize that more than 50% of people working do so for a large multi national corporation. Those companies have the right and the mandate to operate as efficiently as possible. The first priority is running the business in the most efficient manner possible. The second are employees and third are share holders. The shareholders are in fact lending the working capital to a corporation with the expectation of making a profit. If you don't operate efficiently then the shareholders pull their money out by selling their stock. Without the money the corporation does not have the financial means to operate and pay employees. Railroads are under extreme pressure now because AMAZON has created the one day fulfillment process and changed buyers expectations. The UPS is just responding to the market economy where profit is king and it is never going to change. They will eventually need those 200 employees again but it may take a while.

  10. The problem is most union employees (railroad, auto workers, etc) don't perform well in the corporate world. They are used to get paid 40 bucks an hour with benefits and a pension to do minimal work. When they have to adjust to reality it doesn't go very well. I predict most of these guys will retire early, live off unemployment or look for another railroad job out of state asap.
