TKC SATURDAY NIGHT PLAYLIST!!! CERNER DOWNSIZING AND THE DEMISE OF THE KANSAS CITY HOMETOWN CORPORATION!!!

This week the most impactful economic news for the Kansas City metro was the start of job cuts for a top ranking company undergoing an incredible economic boom.

Check some of the best reporting on the topic:

YF: Cerner Layoffs 2019: 16 Things to Know About the CERN Job Cuts

KCUR: Cerner Will Layoff At Least 100 Kansas City-Area Employees

HealthIT: Cerner laid off 255 employees as it seeks to reduce operating costs. One analyst said it's further evidence that the Meaningful Use boom years are gone.

The job loses aren't so significant for a company with nearly 25K employees worldwide . . . But it's the global part of the equation that should worry locals.

Is Cerner REALLY a Kansas City company???

Not really.

The founder touted his local roots but he has passed away and even a quick glimpse at the company's financials show a very real commitment to outsourcing and automation. In a strange twist of fate, the biz that championed hospitals and med tech outsourcing is now evolving due its own redistribution of labor efforts.

Translation:

Cerner is just as much an Indian company as it is a Kansas City company.

For stockholders this is a very good thing and will help cut costs and power higher profits. Meanwhile, locals in search of cushy high paying tech jobs and an active civic corporate parent are out of luck.

Whilst presser coverage and PR hack assurance dominate most local coverage, the consequences of International biz replacing our beloved hometown corporate oligarchs is ignored. As Sprint fades into the long goodnight of corporate oblivion, skepticism about the future of "hometown" companies is not only understandable but essential.

And all of this inspires our corporate playlist tonight . . .

As always, thanks for reading this week and have a safe and fun Saturday night.

  1. I wouldn't be so confident in the future of outsourcing an automation. A lot of businesses realizes that the junk coded overseas often breaks down and it costs just as much to maintain as it does to outsource so the prices double. The best link here is that "meaningful use" item which shows us how the government helped to prop up Cerner with a host of new regulations and incentives. There are a lot of very smart people working at Cerner but their growth would have have been so explosive without a lot of help from the Obama Administration.

    1. Cerner reminds me a lot of Sprint. Trouble is, they don't have every idiot out there buying 1000 phones in order to keep them afloat. Hospital buyers are a lot harder to influence.

  2. Would have thought that somebody would have told Cerner that the Bannister Mall land was cursed. And what happened to that idea, I thought they were supposed to revive that area in exchange for a lot of KC incentives. Last time I checked South KC still was waiting for that so-called "economic impact" that Sly promised. Just like every other development.

  4. Cerner's growth was meteoric over the past 10 years. Some pull back is to be expected.

  5. 10:04 it started falling apart when funkyshit failed to get the soccer stadium built there, plus the blacks have caused major problems with the whole project too.

  6. 10:04 Ya the land is cursed, Any land you put a KCFD Fire station on proves it. I can only imagine the incentives Cerner got for landing in that part of the hood along with the QT on the North entrance of the Cerner complex. Kansas City Missouri is failure after failure after failure, anything local government touches turns to hot trash in a matter of short time.

  7. Trump's Wall Street tax cuts really have the economy booming.

Everyone enjoying their new jobs and huge raises? So much winning...

  8. I live on that side of town and it hasn't changed that area much. Maybe a few new places to eat. Nobody has mentioned how they managed to get revaluated for lower property taxes for the Hickman Mills school district. They really got screwed in their budget last year. Shame on you !

  9. 12:48 the fire station has always been there, those guys that got blew up back in 88 came from that fire station

  10. 12:48 the QT has always been there too, what’s wrong with you?

  11. Maybe the hot girls that worked at DST Systems in the 1980's and slept their way into promotions can go to work at Cerner. They are close to 60 now, old and dried up, and would work cheap, as nobody values a women that sells herself to get ahead in the business world (except DST).
