AN UPCOMING ORDINANCE THREATENS TO DECIMATE KANSAS CITY NEIGHBORHOOD ZONING RULES AND PERMIT POLITICALLY CONNECTED CORPORATE DEVELOPERS TO BUILD ON TOP OF HOMEOWNERS WITH RECKLESS ABANDON!!!
A better description:
"Kansas City has recently put forward a new ordinance to change the zoning and development code regarding non-conforming lots. There’s been a lot of confusion about what our current law allows for with infill development and what Ordinance 190506 would do. If we want to do more to promote sensible infill and the development of affordable housing, there are ways to do that through thoughtful legislation, but the current ordinance doesn’t accomplish that. Please join us in urging our council to reject Ordinance 190506."

Hoping that council shows some common sense here because this impacts all of their votes. Most of the speculative development is from out of town but it's residents & neighborhoods who elect. I know it's easy to look at the campaign donations and think otherwise but signing off on this for most council members would be a mistake would probably inspire a challenge down the line.

DeleteLook around KC, the communities that have a better quality of life are the ones that enforce their codes. Overland Park was notorious about keeping their neighborhoods intact when they were the best place to live in KC. If you really want a "renaissance" in KC neighborhoods, it's starts with making sure the rules apply to everyone.

ReplyDeleteKCMO residents need to get used to having high rise section ape housing next to them. The new high rises will have 3 to 4 houses in between them and this will be prevalent throughout the city. This is exactly what out of state developers want. Say goodbye to your neighborhoods. Developers will not allocate for parking spaces but will use front yards for this.

This same idea is being pushed in Los Angeles by a state legislator that is on record as saying “single family homes are racist and immoral “.

ReplyDeleteThis is just giving a free pass to architects, speculators, and builders to plunder neighborhoods and bulldoze right over people at will since the city isn't going to monitor them, keep them in line, or discipline them when necessary once all the permits are cleared and issued.

ReplyDeleteWait a minute, isn't this already happening in Central Hyde Park with the MAC company building on top of those houses at the four corners? I might add that the city is letting them build without enough parking. It's also suppose to be affordable housing but according to the market rates it's really just that, "market rate". Seems like everyone is a little late on this matter.

It makes people suspicious even when the information appears to be rock solid (building pun intended).
The lack of required offstreet parking --just by itself--should totally alarm residents. Hyde Park is going to become like St. Louis' Central West End, or midtown Manhattan NYC with drivers circling the streets for hours, or getting $90 parking tickets like my nephew in Denver got with his Lodo apartment till he had to move back home.
Hyde Park is already in grave danger since the City is allowing 1000 new apartments at Linwood and Troost to be built--each with 6/10ths of ONE parking spot apiece!!!!!!! CrayCray. Someone should start a rickshaw service for that "last half mile" walk from a free parking spot on an adjacent neighborhood street to those kids' front doors! Dark streets, snow and ice--not conducive to a bike. Especially for women.
I feel especially for the charming historic homes on Charlotte, etc. because desperate millenial drivers will cram their cars in, blocking driveways, just so waiters and artisans and techies who rent fancy apartments can park and trundle home and sleep. Just ask the homeowners in Central West End in St. Louis.
May cities, minneapolis, portland etc. have done away with zoning laws all together recently and that is a terrible thing for most historic neighborhoods. There is plenty of housing in space on the east side that is ready for development and it should be explored before we add low income housing to our historic neighborhoods. This is bad for everyone and the fact that was even proposed is a bad sign for the future

Best way to kill a nice neighborhood and school district (this part doesn't apply to KCMO districts they already are the shit)is to cram a bunch of multifamily apartment units in. ReplyDeleteRiffing on the actual graphics of the video, this could give new meaning to the 1950's and 60's strategy of real estate "red lining". An interesting sly (pun intended) way to disrupt. Keeping someone out, or moving someone in.
If someone can jam in a stack of apartments four stories tall, and block out the sunlight, 2 1/2 feet from a stately historic home, or a bungalow, what's the rental or rehab incentive for the existing homes? Hell, you can't even get a ladder in that space to repaint or repair the gutters!
And if some socialist architect or investor plants these tall giants every four houses, this ARMY OF INVADING APARTMENTS will succeed, like a sci fi movie, in driving out the existing population.

There is plenty of room for this shit in the abandon areas of the east side, where affordable housing is needed most. The projects didn’t have any parking and were way more affordable than this shit but guess what? It was torn down.

And leave neighborhoods and their residents left trying to pick up the pieces.
Neighborhoods, particularly those that are already stressed, need to work to reinforce their foundations and stabilize their bases, and the last thing that's needed is to introduce renters, who will have no stake in the community and will leave as soon as their are problems to solve or the next big thing comes along.
With all the challenges KCMO has, it's hard to believe that this kind of meddling has any interest or support at all.
