TKC MUST READ!!! KCPD CHIEF SEYZ WEED FUELS KANSAS CITY VIOLENT CRIME!!!

As KCMO weed legalization took a step backward, here's the top cop sets up a straw man argument.

Respectfully, we disagree . . .

FEW ACTIVISTS CLAIM WEED DECRIMINALIZATION WILL REDUCE CRIME, INSTEAD THE MAIN ARGUMENT FOR MARIJUANA LAW REFORM OPPOSES PERSECUTION BY THE PRISON INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX TARGETING MOSTLY NONVIOLENT STONERS!!!

TKC doesn't smoke weed but most sober critics realize the waste of resources in putting pot heads behind bars is unfathomable given far more dangerous criminals on local streets.

More to the point . . .

WEED DOESN'T KILL PEOPLE, PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE!!!

The Chief implies that weed dealers are violent but completely neglects to offer any stats regarding violence connected a virtual army of stoners who rarely cross paths with the law. When the Chief notes that "10 of our homicides have been directly motivated by marijuana" he's actually disproving his argument given that it's MORE LIKELY THOSE MURDERS WERE OVER MONEY DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE CURRENT ILLICIT DRUG TRADE. Fact is, drug dealers killing each other is a constant whilst their product often varies.

Instead of taking on crux of the push for marijuana law reform, the Chief's post offers anecdotes about murdered doggies and attempts to debunk the lesser claims of a movement that's making progress in Missouri and across the nation.

Checkit:

KCPD CHIEF: Marijuana's impact on public safety needs to be part of the conversation

Argument . . .

"Most people don’t realize the connection marijuana has to violent crime in Kansas City. On Sept. 10, two men were murdered in their apartment in south Kansas City. A dog was shot and killed, too. The men were known to sell marijuana, and evidence at the homicide scene confirmed that. Investigation has revealed the marijuana dealing was likely the motive of their homicides. So far this year, 10 of our homicides have been directly motivated by marijuana. The non-fatal shootings are even greater. Most of these marijuana-related shootings start as robberies of marijuana or the money connected to it.

"The common argument is that this violence would cease if marijuana were simply legalized. The data from states that have done so, however, show just the opposite is happening . . .

"There is nothing to prove the rise in violent crime was caused by legalized recreational marijuana in the states that have experienced it. But the correlation is undeniable. The conversation about legalizing marijuana has been largely one-sided. As law enforcement, we must consider the impact this could have on public safety, and that needs to be part of the conversation. We’re not here to stifle the discussion but to add to it. The societal cost and drawbacks deserve as much discussion as any argument made in favor of marijuana legalization."

Read the Chief's post in its entirety.

Accordingly, we ask . . .

IS THE KCPD CHIEF ON THE WRONG SIDE OF HISTORY AND WASTING EFFORT ARGUING AGAINST WEED LAW REFORM?!?

You decide . . .

Comments

  1. The drug war is just a war against poor people. If you have money you can smoke all of the marijuana you'd like without any consequences. If you get caught any decent lawyer will get the charges reduced or eliminated.

Marijuana laws have mostly been used to diversify the prison system make sure there are enough poor, white trash "in the joint" along with the rest of the underclass.

So if it had been an argument over crack, or a bad debt, eg late rent, then the dog would not have died???

    So what is the solution?
If we legalize sales of less than 100 grams of marijuana, the KCPD might require taking a course in animal rights and sensitivity training, as well as How to Shoot Straight When One is Stoned?

New tshirt to fund this training:
Stoners don't shoot dogs. Shooters do. Stay in your lane, lawbreakers!

  4. Anytime there is cash involved, violence is involved. How many episodes of first 48 have you seen where the victim is dead in a vehicle with a sack of weed in their hand? Colorado dispensaries are targets for Robbery regularly. Either way, legalization will provide safer places to buy weed.

  5. P.J. O'Rourke has opined that we should legalize all downers and prohibit all uppers. Makes sense. And he should know, with his advanced degree in streetcorner pharmacology.

  6. 4:37, of course there are consequences, even if there are no charges. For one think, your thinking is distorted. Over time you become duller and stupider.

    As you have shown.

And Driving Under the Influence of Drugs, which can include weed and its effects on your reaction times, is included.

  7. Tracy, your ignorance is showing.

  9. There are always exceptions to the rule, but about half of my acquaintances and friends have smoked weed their entire lives.

    They are NOT violent.

I do think weed changes you and makes you lethargic in your daily life if you use it all the time.

Cocaine, now THAT IS A HELL OF A DRUG. Very bad.

The drug addicts I have known, were, I thought, unlucky. It's just luck, or, bad luck of the draw. Some people do one line of coke and it's fuckin OVER!!! What your body craves, is probably present at birth and all you need is the trigger, to wreck everything.

  10. This contemporary GMO cannabis is NOT your grandpappy's Chisolm Creek ditch weed. Not to mention the mind-killing concentrations of THC and as yet unspecified contaminants in shatter and other highly refined products for vaping.

sheeeeeeeiiiit....., edibles don't even yield the same psychoactive payload https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2019/07/why-edibles-make-people-paranoid/594649/

What I'm saying for all you slow-learners is, the chief may not be entirely off the mark. Wasn't nobody jacking cats for their stash or their weed cash back in the day. The contemporary weed user, particularly the young and still highly neuroplastic weed user is at vastly increased risk of violent psychosis.

Only complete dumbasses fail to put two-and-two together wrt the aberrant violentization of both the traditional hood and the golden ghetto, as well. You'da thunk that meth would've driven the maximum spike in violentization, but honestly, meth has some extremely stiff competition with this new jack marijuana, particularly on adolescent male minds...,

Chuck & 6:15, it is not more powerful, now. That's just a common myth. The young have fooled with it a lot, but it's not stronger. They are, in fact, trying to get the medicinal benefits without actually getting high. It's actually weaker. I got a lot higher, for a lot longer, in the old days on simple Mexican Dirt Weed.

One of the things they have done is make it a lot more expensive (which is the real root of the crime aspect.) I bought my first ounce for $15 in 1972. Now, it's $20 a gram.

I had anxiety attacks when I was a teenager that my mother misdiagnosed as asthma, until she finally took me to a doctor who insisted that they was nothing wrong with my lungs, & told her to stop diagnosing her children. I smoked marijuana one day in January 1972, & I have not had an anxiety attack since that day.

Stoners are a lot less violent than drinkers, & no one buys pot from strangers. It's the dealers of the other drugs that are the problem, & the people who use the harder drugs who desperately need cash for their next fix. You simply can't compare meth heads & heroin users with stoners unless you're the lying DEA!

Going to a store & buying pot just like the drunks are allowed to buy beer will reduce crime, & protect the lives of your citizens.

The first commenter is right. The war on drugs is a war on people; mostly poor people. In the big cities everything is complicated by the unacknowledged war on blacks.

If you care about people, then legalize marijuana.

  15. Unregulated recreational weed dulls the senses and slows reflexes. It is the cause of many bad decisions and makes people dumber than they already are. It will cause continued victimization so idiots can stay high. This is just not a good idea and it won't make any difference if it doesn't pass, these folks will buy their dope and smoke it anyway.

  16. Now we know what is wrong with Bryon. He broke the law in 1972 by purchasing weed and smoked it. The long term effects and his lack of coherence is very evident.

One of the consequences of the war on drugs is people losing respect for law enforcement. Free people do what they want regardless of the fascists & their laws. Freedom is for those who live free.

Fortunately, my local police are not stupid. They don't care about pot or stoners. They have bigger fish & bigger problems. People are dying from opioids, not marijuana. It doesn't make people dumber, that's just stupid. Does alcohol make people dumber?

We tried Prohibition. This is just Prohibition 2.0.

    We learned nothing!

  32. I swear that the police are bipolar. They don’t know what the heck they’re talking about. First, it was too many guns on the street, then it was the broken windows theory that made people so violent, then it was gangs, then it was domestic violence and now they’re talking about weed... next it will be short yellow school buses. Gawd! These cops use every excuse in the book as to why they can’t do their job while simultaneously asking for more and more money. No sirs. The buck stops here. Increased pay mean better results... and when they do that should mean demotion or less pay but the police operate on an entitlement culture.

  38. Smith is reaching at straws here. The Jackson County Jail has all eyes on KCPD and the international drug market that launders trillions in Kansas City. Sure weed dealers get killed but mass surveillance and rising arrest rates due to this automated form of taxation has increased the murder rate in Kansas City more than Jimmy The Weed rolling through the 40's.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Police Departments have exceeded their usefulness to the community. After decades of no accountability, a true reckoning has begun. In some ways, the Departments have been their own worst enemies by not focusing on quality of life issues that directly affect citizens. In response to their decline, departments want to have a public enemy #1 to hold on to their institutional power. KCPD would rather make their public enemy #1 weed instead of violent felons with guns.
