Kansas City Logic: 'Privileged' Drivers Deserve Robbery If Doors Are Unlocked?!?

A silly social media debate pits practicality against civic virtue as Kansas City middle-class neighborhoods confront a surge in car crime that has been mostly unreported by local media.

Accordingly, this statement has garnered a fire storm of reaction and merits inspection by TKC readers without the blood curses and stalking that usually accompany app-based debate.

Here's the word:

Dear privileged people,

It is not breaking into a car when you leave the doors unlocked! Lock your doors! Know your situation, and where you live. Let me know when they throw rocks through your window or steal your car, like when I lived on 16th and Lister. These people around here take money (coins). It’s kids or crackheads. Regardless, the problem can be solved with a push of a button.

IS HE RIGHT??? ARE CARELESS KANSAS CITY PROPERTY OWNERS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN VICTIMIZATION?!?!

The answer has bigger culture war implications for #MeToo, Immigration, CCW Gun Rights and possibly the great Taylor Swift Vs. Kanye debate . . .

You decide . . .

  1. Isn't the whole point of CCW to protect you and yours?

It's tough but the idea of it keeps a lot more people safe than it hurts.

KC criminals should know that the next person they attack might be armed and shoot back.

  2. "IS HE RIGHT??? ARE CARELESS KANSAS CITY PROPERTY OWNERS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN VICTIMIZATION?!?!"

Yes, he is right about locking cars, but not about the responsibility issue. Blaming car owners for break ins is like saying "the devil made me do it."

    Nevertheless, lock your doors, people.

  7. How it should be....9/18/19, 8:16 AM

Locked or unlocked people have no right to steal your stuff. They do have a right to be shot dead on sight if caught doing so no questions asked.

  8. If I leave a car unlocked it is still my car and everything, including coins, are still mine. If you take my stuff you are a thief. I can lay a ten dollar bill on my front porch and as long as I choose to leave it there it is still mine and if you take it you are a thief. If you are a thief you belong in jail or dead. Leave my shit alone.

  9. @ 806 - I have the right to privacy and I can leave my doors unlocked on my house and on my car if I so choose. An unlocked door or car is not an invitation to you to take stuff or walk right in. My home is not a public space. You don't live there and have no right to enter until you are invited. An unlocked door is not an invitation, are you too stupid to understand that? Apparently you are. You don't have any right to kick my locked door in because I failed to keep it unlocked for your dumb ass. The idea that you feel you have the right to steal or invade a personal space just shows how stupid you really are. And I am warning you that should you decide to walk into my garage to steal my stuff in there I have plenty of weapons to make you realize that you just made a very bad choice of things to do that day. Just try me asshole.

  14. Kansas laws, updated in 2017, states that if someone enters your car, while you occupy it, with perceived violent intentions, you may shoot them and be covered under : "stand your ground". Cars are given the same status as home or workplace, a private area that cannot be entered. If your car is locked or unlocked -they will get in -breaking windows is very common, NOT locking a car prevents broken windows.

  15. Kansas law. Note occupied car is covered.

    (b) A person is justified in the use of deadly force to prevent or terminate unlawful entry into or attack upon any dwelling, place of work or occupied vehicle if such person reasonably believes that such use of deadly force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to such person or another. (c) Nothing in this section shall require a person to retreat if such person is using force to protect such person’s dwelling, place of work or occupied vehicle. History: L. 1969, ch. 180, § 21-3212; L. 2006, ch. 194, § 4; L. 2010, ch. 124, § 5; L. 2010, ch. 136, § 22; L. 2011, ch. 30, § 8, July 1.

  16. so is the article trying to say anything not locked, bolted down, or chained down is legal to take. You loose legal possession of something you bought cause you didn't secure it?

  17. @ 806, 839 here. I am not dissing you I am agreeing. It is my stuff so you area thief if you take it pure and simple. If I drop something on the street and it has my name and address on it then return it. If it is unmarked then shame on me for dropping something and I get what I deserve. But if it is in my house or car or garage or on my lawn leave it the fuck alone you degenerate. Now that is not directed to you 806, I do not mean you are a degenerate, thieves are degenerates, any gender, color, religion, sexual preference and mental ability level.

  19. Don’t be stupid. Thinking you can leave your car unlocked is stupid. Enough people are doing it that other stupid people will take the chance that your car doors are left unlocked and check. This leads to other stupid people coming to the same realization and doing the same thing. Now it’s a problem. Unless you plan on sitting and watching for the stupid people to come and take your stuff then just lock your vehicle’s doors. Go to bed knowing that the most stupid people move on to look for other opportunities. For those of you who forget to lock your vehicle and leave the keys/key fob also in the vehicle … you should get a special award for being stupid.
