Cerner Didn't Save South Kansas City: Some Neighborhoods Still A Dump

Tragic look at this part of KCMO wherein only biz backed by taxpayers has a chance at success . . . Here's a glimpse at leftovers of the American dream that now stand vacant:

KC neighbors upset as commercial blight worsens

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Nearly four months after speaking with 41 Action News about crumbling and abandoned shopping centers that have sat vacant for years, south Kansas City neighbors say not much has changed. The grocery store in the Loma Vista Shopping Center still remains boarded up.

  1. Blacks move in. Steal everything that's not nailed down. Rob businesses till there's no choice but to close down. And guess what. It's someone else's fault.

    1. As a "black" who has lived in south KC for over 30 years I take issue with this racist remark. All of the African-Americans that I know who live in the area are employed, love their children and take pride in their property. The problem in this area is not racial is economic. You have greedy realtors buying up homes from the elderly or kids whose parents have passed away and left them with unwanted property. They turn the properties in to rentals. The land lords ignore the properties other than to collect the rent. The tenants don't want to sink money in to a property that they don't own so the propery sinks into disrepair. I see just as many whites living in these rental properties as blacks. So anonymous white person if you want to blame someone for the state of neighborhoods in south KC just look in the mirror.

  2. It was a dump before cerner. Business and house shoppers looked at demographics and said screw that.they should have built by the speedway.

  3. ^^^ +25,000,000 for both comments. The blacks ruin everything every where they go, funny side note, there’s a WIC building for mooselimbs only next door.

  4. Cerner's a private company that's interested in growing its business and profits.
It's not some civic nonprofit that's dedicated to "improving the community".
That's supposedly what local government's for.
This "private/public partnership was just another example of KCMO government falling over itself to give hundreds of millions of taxpayer property and dollars away and was lead by non other than John Sharp, who couldn't run a one-car garage.
Cerner built a fortress and for very good reason and their employees, most of who can afford to actually live elsewhere in the metro, do.
    Then they expanded to KCK.
Just add this to the very long list of "economic development" projects in KCMO where the "private" got a really good deal and the "public" got the dregs.
How's the new downtown hotel coming along?
