TKC Fact Check: Kansas City World Cup Would Be An Economic Disaster

Here's public radio running hype for City Hall and touting imaginary "economic impact" numbers for sporting events that play fast and loose with numbers in an attempt to downplay hard cash funded by KCMO taxpayers.

Could Kansas City Host Huge Sports Events Like The Super Bowl? The Answer's Not 'No'

Some of the country's best gymnasts, along with their coaches, families and fans, have been in Kansas City this weekend for the U.S. Gymnastics Championships. USA Gymnastics estimates the event will have a $5.6 million economic impact on the region, not including what visitors spend eating out or shopping for gifts to take home.

  1. KCUR is now just an advertising agency for corporations and every other crook trying to hustle people out of their money in one form or the other.

  2. Keep that momentous momentum momenting!

  3. The economic "estimates" of event impacts on the city are better classified as wishful thinking. Kinda like the 65,000 visitors that are in KC today.

  4. Yes, but KCUR doesn't seem to realize that a Gymnastics Meet has nothing to do with our ability to successfully host a Sporting Event, that's like comparing one of the many KC Metro Bike "rides" to the Tour De France.

  5. Metro KANSAS CITY THAT WOULD BE A GOOD TIME FOR EVERYONE TO TAKE THERE VACATION AND HEAD OUT OF TOWN. YOU HAVE A HALF A MILLION PLUS COMING INTO THE METRO AT ONE TIME.

  8. This one-horse town couldn't host a ping-pong tournament, much less a world-class sporting event. Try driving around the streets of downtown while avoiding the potholes, steel plates, crazy pedestrians, delivery trucks parked every which way, and tell me that we can do this. Ha ha ha

  9. Larry Nasser wants to know why he couldn't come to the meet this year? It was no problem in prior years.

  10. This is basically a fluff piece to prime tax payers that more tax payer funded asks are coming soon. Write it down, soon we'll need to spend more tax dollars to expand Bartle Hall because it's to small to host X, Y, Z conventions and we're losing those conventions to other cities. Stop me if you've heard any of this before....

It's always going to be something with this town.

    Airport
    Streetcar
    convention hotel

Look, no one is against progress and developers building here. It's just all the tax subsidies to those developers by way of under the table deals and tax hikes that hurt the working class that people don't like. This town is going to always be chasing ways to spend tax dollars for "progress". As mentioned, soon, I'm sure either Bartle Hall or the Ballroom will need to be expanded and/or upgraded.
