Kansas City Streetcar Extension Costs Keep Rising Whilst Waiting For Fed Money

Most of the stalled streetcar "news" is nothing more than local propaganda but we picked out a bit of realness from a recent update:

The initial $151 million federal grant application was turned down in April. Gerend said the amount of the grant has increased slightly. The Streetcar Authority anticipates that its federal request will be $160 million. Local officials estimate the cost of the planned extension at $316 million.

Executive Director Tom Gerend, who testified before Congress on July 16, says the Streetcar Authority is on track in its pursuit of federal funding to support extending the line south along Main Street to the UMKC campus.

  1. Such a bargain at over 60 million a mile, wow, completely stupid. How many miles of roadways or sewers can be fixed for that amount of money.

Feds will never approve this as it is no solution to a real problem. Topeka received approximately $2 million in federal assistance to improve their bus system and KCMO will get nothing for the failed fair weather toy train.

  4. I have a great suggestion to save $316-million.

  5. Whens Lil' Tommy Gerend going to move to KCMO and buy some property near his beloved troy train. Must be a long commute everyday back and forth to his home in Olathe.

  6. ^^^ As long as taxpayers keep digging into their pockets to pay his salary and earnings tax probably never. Why would he with a free ride like that?

  7. Gerend would be doing everyone a favor if he went back to Rockford, Illinois where he's from.

  8. If the streetcar were an actual benefit to Kansas City, we would want to pay for it. The fact that we will only build the extension if we are able to extort money from taxpayers in Arkansas, Montana, Tennessee etc. is a good indication that it is only a tourist attraction with little to no real benefit to KC area residents.

  9. The President is not gonna give money to a foo foo project especially in a demmocrim run city, he knows how corrupt they are and knows most of the money is going to be pocketed, it does not and never did cost that much money to put tracks down on a street.

  10. If only City Hall and the ATA would of gone to Streetcars instead of think Light Rail for #30 million a mile this would of all have been done by now .To bad the developers had so much greed to take over the land from other people .

  11. The fact that the city has already spent $150 million on this because of the instagram generation is enough to give up all hope that leadership here can make sound decisions
